He was the first on the scene to protect and stick up for Ed after Kosi bumped him.

Sure, he might knock out the occasional team-mate every now and then but hey - nobody's perfect! :donk:

I love Setanta. I love his passion and commitment. He's like a dog with bone out there on that football field. And hey, if he can bag 1 or 2 goals a week and crash-bang a few packs then I reckon he's needed. Plus that mark in the dying seconds of Monday nights game was crucial.

Love the big Irish.

Hope I'm wrong.

If he keeps up this form for the rest of the year - I will admit consistency is something he struggles with and last year was a good example of that - we would be mad not to re-sign him. When Setanta is playing well Carlton play well.

No one is writing Hampson off, but at present O'Hailpin is ahead of him in skill (marking and I would argue kicking, not in terms of ruck work) and in endevour.

He nearly capitulated one of his own, bumped into another and send him to the ground, got in the way of a 3rd player while he was trying to get clear....and that is what I can remember. I like his passion and all but he is a liability. I keep waiting and waiting and wanting to see the improvement but it just never comes. I know most of you will dislike what I have to say but deep down you know it's the truth.

Just like Thornton looks like he doesn't want to be there anymore! His heart is not into it, not sure why but that is what it is.

I agree his body language at the Bullants and at Carlton has been strange, doesn't seem close with the players. After the game he spent most of the time by himself whilst other players were chatting and celebrating.

I did notice some players tell Setanta to settle as he seemed agitated at the 3rd quater break, Simmo and Carrazzo were telling him to cool it. Seems it may have something to do with Thornton.

I like Setanta he come from the other side of the world, left his family and a sport that he was dominating. Cost us nothing in terms of drafting and I would say he wouldn't be on big coin. He has definitely given more than what he has costed us. I still think he could play back when required until Watson and McCarthy develop.

Plenty of players have been drafted in the 20’s and 30’s that have given little, Setanta has given us a lot. I doubt he would be around in 2 years but nerveless he has played a role as we have moved up the ladder.

Thornton is a strange one. He does not seem close with the other players... He is a liability in that he blames everyone but himself. Seems angry all the time. Still plays sideways and goes off on his own tangeant. Reckon this is why he us out of favour in the match committees/coaches mind.

Given the chance would be out the door in a flash I reckon.

More then likely he'll be gone at the end of this year as he's out of contract, and seems out of favour by the coach and the players. Semms to me that he only played on Monday night due to injuries to a string of our key defenders (White, Laidler, Bower).
Going off at Setanta wouldnt have helped endear him to the playing group either, who have probably had enough of his constant sooking and finger pointing. Looked like he knows hes on the outer too as he looked pretty emotionless when singing the song with the boys after the game.
No wonder Wallsy loses it at this guy...

I think most of us have been looking for that great leap forward, but it is coming only bit by bit, and he doesn't seem that close to the other players, although onfield demeanour is different to offield and he comes from a different background and there actually aren't many guys who are his age. Ironically TBird was fairly close to him. I think also he is pretty singleminded. Having said all that if you weren't happy the last two weeks you are hard to please Surrey. Don't listen to the commentators. He set up 4 golden scoring opportunities in the 3rd to have them all wasted, and even his last shot wouldn't have merited a comment if it was any other player. He opened the angle due to slack marking by the Saints and only just missed. Having said that I wish players would just take set shots. He had 2 clangers - compare that to a few team mates and most of his disposals were decisively to our advantage.

We don't have much height in key positions and if he gets the freedom the Saints gave him he can be a contributor. His rucking has gone from woeful to okay, and given the congestion around ball ups it is debateable how much value a side gets by dominating knockouts. Rucks need to give something around the ground.

Setanta just doesn't intuitively understand the game, so as a forward he will have ordinary games. He may be in and out of the side but would be a handy sub and while many focus on the mistakes, how many players 199cm+ have anything like his agility, ground skills and disposal on both sides.

I think come years end there are 5 or 6 ahead of him for delisting, and one of these days he will have a day when everything clicks - lets hope its a big game.

What is all this crap about delisting Setanta at the end of this year. We will be lucky if GWS doesn't give him an offer he can't refuse because he can protect young players but I would keep him. If Kreuzer plays CHF, who is going to be our third ruck on the list? not to mention the other positions he can play. His our true utility

as someone else has said, he has more than a passing playing resemblence to Kepler Bradley, who Sheeds likes and Sheeds has commented on what Setants brings to the side.

Setanta's field kicking seems to have improved - he drilled two passes into the forward line under pressure against the Saints. I remember when we bemoaned the fact that no-one could kick to a lead in the forward line.
