I reckon by the end of his career he will be known as the best Blues player ever...he is consistently brilliant....not many other players were brilliant week in week out....Doull probably comes close with Diesel and SOS not far behind....and for sheer brilliance in big games and finals I have seen no better than the Dominator....

A few notes.:

a) Jezza wasn't hot and cold - you must've watched a differerent Jezza. He was 3rd in the Brownlow 3 times, he kicked over 100 goals in a season, he played in 4 premierships and starred in 2 of them, he was considered just about the best of his era (Captain of Victoria), he was consistently a top player.
b) Juddy is the best Carlton player I've seen ......... since 2007

My top 5:

1. John Nicholls
2. Jezza
3. Doull
4. Crosswell
5. Johnston

(mind you, this list changes every time I do it, but the top 2 haven't changed for 35 years)

My only change for that list is Crosswell out & Kernahan in.

I also do not agree that Jezza was hot & cold????????

Agree with the premise that we need to see Judd win us a few finals, or at least perform to his usual standard in finals for him to elevated into our top echelon.

Also needs to fix up his bloody kicking, especially for goal.

Yeah geez,.............. This is a tough one.

The top 5 that i've seen during my 30 years on this earth.

- KOUTA
I know he didn't win a brownlow, norm smith, whatever else - But this guy changed football, similar to how Juddy has. When he went down with his second knee injury he re-invented his game to be the best clearance player in the game, all at a time when Carlton were, well - SHIT! As good as Juddy's game last friday was, I have never seen a player come close to what Kouta did Vs the Kangaroos that day at Princess Park. 39 possessions and 5 goals playing on Wayne Carey against the reigning premiers! Magic!

- SOS
In the last 3 decades, backmen are just the forgotten hero's. Talk up Scarlett all you want, but SOS is and always will be the Don Bradman of defenders. Players like this are worth as much, if not more than a 100+ goal kicker a year!

- STICKS
I was only very young when sticks was playing and I don't think on skill alone he would make it in my top 5, but the bastard had just such an aura that demanded your respect. He's leadership was what made him brilliant!

- JUDD
Yeah, he's up there and climbing. He's already a champion of the game and will end up a Legend when he's done. I can't wait to see his name etched on that #5 locker. I reckon he'll be #1 @ Carlton by the time he retires, hopefully with a 2nd premiership flag!

- FEVOLA
Hate me and mock me if you want, but for all of Fev's faults (and we know he had many), he still won dozens of games off his own boot. He would turn players inside out and when he was done, left them scratching their heads thinking "How the hell did he do that?"
You don't become a 3 time All Australian and a 2 time Coleman medalist without some pretty decent talents.
Even the games I used to go to where i KNEW we were gonna be pumped by 100+ points, i'd still attend just to watch Fev play.

Sorry to the likes of Diesel, Bradley, Ratts, etc etc etc.

This can only be answered after his career. If he takes us to multiple premierships, he's going to be right up there.

He's certainly in the best 5 I've seen (I'm 30), along with SOS, Sticks, Diesel and Kouta.

Top 3 like you Moshe - agree Jezza was not hot or cold.

Croswell on the other hand was very hot or cold but was a sensational finals player - and probably would have won the Norm Smith in 1968 if there was won.

Johnston also never let us down in a finals or big games - but perhaps there maybe extraneous reasons as to why - which is why he has gone down in my estimations in the past few years.

So I would try and squeeze in SOS, Sticks and Kouta in your last 2 positions, but as they say 3 into 2 doesnt go, and where the hell do you put Greg Williams in.

Judd has to be right up there - but I think we should have the discussion after his career is over.

What I will say is as Carlton Supporters we have to make sure we keep up the good fight with regard to where our players and achievements stand in their place in history.

I am still fuming watching that crappy FoxSports 50 greatest marks of all time - having Bosustow's mark at 18 and Jezza's mark at number 5 and seeing Moorcroft's push in the back at number 2.

I like to see the Dominator get a mention. If you get extra points for big games, not many came close to Wayne Johnston.

I actually thought about including Fev in my top 5 as well. Agree on all points made about him. He'd be in my top 10.

Judd is up there but his best isn't as good as Jezza's, Croswell or Kouta. I am glad Fev gets a mention because he is in the top 10 since 1978. I think there is two questions if you wanted to pick a the best player week in week out, Judd might be your man. If you want to pick a guy to win a game for you in September for me it is Jezza, Kouta, Jono, Sticks. I still say Kouta's 2000 year is the best season of football I have seen by a Carlton player, as a segue into another topic the most underated players I have seen at carlton are: Ashman, Buckley, Harmes & Crosswell

Brent Crosswell and Wayne Johnston can be added to the list of greatest ever.

Especially when it counted....big games and Finals.

Love these kind of threads. Because I lived in the USA throughout the 90s, I probably missed the week-in, week-out viewing of Sticks, Diesel, Braddles, and Kouta at their best. So I'm kinda limited to 70s, 80s, and 00s.

I agree with what Agro says about Johnno too, and yes, Crosswell was a bit hot and cold.

Is Agro implying that Johnston was on the gear for finals?

I know he had his problems with painkillers and might have partied hard, but hadn't heard suggestions that his finals legend was tarnished...

Things were a lot different back then and I'm sure a lot of players did a lot of things.

The dominator is right up there amongst our footballing best AFAIC and what happens in a players post career life doesn't affect that.

Firstly slandering Dominator on heresay is extremely poor, don't judge him by his post career activities.

Now to the judging...............

Having only seen Jezza when I was a young lad I can't go past Diesel, every touch hurt the opposition and lifted some average players into decent ones. Just a joy to watch every week and showed what a brilliant footballer is capable of. The other 4 take your pick from Jezza, Doull, Big Nick and Sticks, apologies to SOS, Dominator.

Kouta wasn't consistent enough, one or two awesome seasons isn't enough. At his peak he was the best though.

Unless Judd can improve his disposal I'd have him outside our top 6.

Nearly forgot, special mention for Braddles.

Gee I wouldn't even have him close.

What I am about to say sounds like a slight but isn't really... that is Judd is the least exceptional exceptional player I have ever seen. What do I mean? I mean he is exceptional, but when you break down his technical skills there is nothing exceptional about him. Average kick, almost non-existant mark, average handballer. What makes him stand out is a sheer hunger to will himself into the contest. It's what makes him stand out from the rest.

But in terms of best ever for Carlton? I'd have Sticks, Braddles, Kouta, SOS, Diesel, Johnston, Hunter (not in that order) ahead of him.

The other question mark I'll always have over him is - is he a Carlton man? He'd have to win a flag before I truly considered him one.
