Would definitely NOT want him to be Senior Coach ahead of Ratts. Our club would be paying a ridiculour amount to lure him out of indifference in which case he just would not have the hunger or drive.
Also, our club would be severely damaged in terms of 'the team'.
Ratts has improved every year. He has earned the right to drive the ship for the coming season where it is clear his future beyond 2011 will be determined.
And, if Ratts does not warrant extension, we need to go about finding the next coach with more than just megabucks up our sleeve.
(I am happy to PAY megabucks but not to lure someone who otherwise would not really want to be coaching at all and based on absolutely and clearly identifying the best guy for this group at this time.)
Whoever coaches 2012 needs to be Premiership coach material. Not in training. I reckon Ratten has now done his apprenticeship and is more qualified than any of the young'ns vying for senior coaching roles (eg. Chris Scott). The next guy, if not Ratts, needs to be a sure thing.

Matthews has already told the footy world he is over coaching.

that's my point. the only way he would change that view is if he was made an offer he couldn't refuse in which case it would be only the money driving his decision. similar to when blight was lured to StKilda for a grand total of virtually half a season!

some people think its smart to throw wads of cash to get an outcome but sometimes a precise PPK is a better choice than a nuclear weapon!

In 2011 I'll take Ratten over Matthews.....there I've said it.....and I'm unwavering in that. Let's just see how 2011 pans out first

What are you waiting for? You just admitted you're unwavering in your view.

Interesting to hear a lot of people banging on about coaching director's and mentor coaches Roos, Matthews and Malthouse. This is not the magic pill, Ratt's is the coach and deserves the chance to see out he's contract. Paying someone mega bucks is not going to build the team for a premiership. A strong game plan and a strong team adherence to work to the game plan, mixed with a strong recruiting and development of players to match the game plan. That's where the next premiership is going to come from. I would say we are still building towards that point with Warnock, Lucas, Henderson,Laidler etc......... We have to be patient!!!!!!

if you read it properly, I said that for 2011, I'm unwavering about BR over LM. Post 2011, I would review that position depending on how 2011 pans out. Would you like me to enrol you in Verbal Reasoning 101 or do you think you can fill out the application form all by yourself?

Just a thought. The aforesaid gentlemen are wonderful coaches but are rookies in the role of director or mentor of coaching. No doubt they're better qualified than anyone but the role is pretty much not tried and tested in the A.F.L. Except by Parko who was ahead of his time. IMO he did it so well at Carlton that Hawthorn recruited him to do the same with Schwab but circumstances were different there.

First post in three years and that's the best you can do? FFS - it's mid-October...in case you haven't noticed Carlton haven't been in the papers for a while now and probably won't be for a while yet. There's no news, so stop making news up.

The major family don't dictate coaching appointments and have far less influence than you would expect given their contribution ---- one member on the board. Obviously their opinion would be considered in the mix a long with a bevy of other's who are entitled or qualified to give it. Ratten looks like our 2011 coach & that is testimony to the fact that Carlton is more democracy than dictatorship.
