I remember one of the first interviews Ratten did when he first took over as caretaker coach from Pagan. He was asked what he hoped to do in the short term and he replied that he wanted the players to want to stay at the club. Failed miserable i would have thought.

I think we're way past the short term to be fair. Aside from Jacobs, is anyone sorry or sad to see any of these players go? I'm not.

lets look at the positive.

we have to improve beyond 8th position. to do so, we need to upgrade personnel.

If we negotiate the appropriate outcomes, players leaving is the right opportunity for all.

Satanta - looking to prolong his career by getting another contract while he still can.
Sauce - Obvious reasons
Walker - Fresh start. Career has stalled.
Grigg - Money and fresh start
Thornton - We all why and most will be happy to see him traded.
Anderson - Too good for VFl not good enough for AFL. Can see why he would be thinking of other opportunities.
Browne - Looking to give it another crack at another club in the hope he can make it.
Fisher hopeful of a trade if not probably retirement
Wig - Retired

There is 9 that possibly would have reasons to want a trade or want out. All understandable.

6PR going for ratings id say.

this.

if it was the likes of Murphy, Gibbs, Judd, Simspon, Jamo, Bower etc.. etc.. those that form our starting 22 if you will then i would be worried, but while its important to keep players for depth, if moving those players on for them to seek opportunity elsewhere, and for us to improve our squad by bring in players that are going to put pressure on our starting 22 and some kids into the team to develop, it is nothing but a position of strength in my opinon.

Perhaps.

But using that logic, you'd think that most clubs would have 9 or so players in that position.

How many clubs have more than one player publically wanting out?

Not saying 6PR isn't full of crap - they have an ordinary track record - but something definitely seems not quite right at the club right now.

Maybe it's us getting rid of a bunch of sooky la-la's from the list... maybe it's just coincidence... or maybe the playing group isn't all that happy. I don't really know for sure.

I am;

Walker - Pick 2 and showed heaps. Has had injuries but shows the run and carry we need. So much of our game relies on kicking back/sideways. Walker, Judd, Armfield and to a lesser extent Russell are the only ones who can take the ball through a zone.

Thornton - A player who isn't perfect but we've put 150+games into and should be a vital part of our game plan.

Sauce - Shattered, but still holding on to hope we'll keep him if a great deal can't be done.

Setanta - who'd of thought at the half way mark this year we'd be throwing him on the scrap heap :screwy: .

Grigg - Another player who get's down and dirty - I'm not his biggest fan, but should be a walk up start in the 22.

look at collingwood for example.

Fraser - wants out
Anthony - seeking trade
Dick didnt even show up to the GF to watch. Must hate the club.
Presti - looking to retire
Lockyer - wants out
Wood would be thinking about it.
Obree retire
Merdhurst prefers to go travelling than listen to Malthouse for another year.
Then you have Davis.

You could make up a story that 8 players couldnt get out quick enough if you wanted. Wouldnt be as believable as using carlton for your story because we chose not to give contract to 2 of our assistants and announced it on the same day as Harvey taking a gig with his old club. Easier to make it look like an exodus.

Not really compelling arguments there Duke. Walker is one shoulder injury away from retirement. Setanta can't get a game, has reached his potential and has leg issues. The game has gone past Thornton and he's stuck in a rut, not to mention a serious attitude problem. Grigg thinks he's made it as a footballer. His skill set hasn't improved since he walked through the door. If we can get these players out and get more quality in then we've done well.

Again...this is a business. I'd trade Judd is the right offer came up.

Grigg was drafted 2 years later than Russell. From memory Rusty wanted out 2 years ago and since then has gone on to be top 3 in our B&F. Going by a similar time frame, Grigg could well be coming into his own over the next season or so.
The job our our football department is to create an environment where players want to stay. Especially after we've done the hard yards and bought them up to a stage where they're physically and psychologically ready to become quality AFL players. It's up to Icke, Ratten and co to sell this message and ensure the players have faith in the system we have in place.
I'm not a huge wrap for Grigg but after putting in the time and effort with him, letting him go now is ridiculous.

Thanks Hutchy.

There's a few retirements there but show me where one of those players has stated he wants out.

So would I Doc - and I'd put Kreuzer up as well for the right deal.

Would you have said all that above after we beat Geelong and the Saints 3 months ago? I doubt it. Back then we were celebrating the team and were busting to get Grigg and AW back in the side. Now we can't wait to push them out.

I think you have unrealistic expectations of what we will get for their services. If we wouldn't give them game time, why would anyone pay top dollar for them?

Yeah, but NONE of those Collingwood players ever get a game. We've got three in Sauce, Walker and Grigg who do - and that's the difference.

And you can't count guys who are retiring from football because they've reached pensionable age.

Thats 3 for us and that isnt the story 6pr are running with. They are talking ten and when making up this story no doubt they have included potential retirees in their list.

The argument about why our 3 want to leave has been going on for weeks in countless threads.

After we beat Geelong? Of course I would have...no one wins the flag in April. As for my expectations...I'm content with 14 and 33 for Jacobs/Walker...29 for Grigg and a 6-pack of imported Belgian ale for O'hAilpin and Thornton...so I wouldn't have thought they were unrealistic in a diluted draft. We mightn't give them game time, but when Richmond and Adelaide play their hand early and offer the sort of cash they have to Grigg and Jacobs then we're well entitled to expect decent return for players that they obviously rate given the reported remuneration.

6PR have undoubtedly exaggerated the extent of discontent at the club, but I wouldnt be surprised if some players (note: even those in our starting 18) we're a little disillusioned at the moment. I think a pertinent question, and it was asked of Mark Harvey in that horrible On The Couch interview a few years ago, is to ask Ratten some vital questions:
* what is the identity of the Carlton Football Club in 2010 going on 2011? What do we stand for as a football club? Do we have the best people in the most important positions to guide us to #17? What aspects are we aspiring to change to get to #17 (is it simply a case of finding a key back and all our problems are solved?

These are pressing questions.. do we have the answers? I'm concerned that the problems at our football club run far deeper than merely a few talented players seeking new homes.

Every single one of those players got games?

+ Tyson Goldsack is likely to go to The Suns

It doesn't matter what the question, the answer is always JUDD.
