Take him to a game and sit next to the obnoxious fat little Collingwood kid we had the misfortune of being next to earlier this year, enough to turn anyone off the Pies.

Peer pressure from other kids is likely to do their head in and fitting in with them may mean more to them than fitting in in a household. It doesn't even have to be their friends, they watch glimpses of the kids at the footy games happy after a win and they may want to join in the fun.

Focus on the little things first...

Heroes: Chris Judd and The Three Amigos. Talk these guys up every chance you get. They represent a true winner and they all generate un-matching excitement. The Amigos are the underdogs in life but achieve great things from the skills they have. Chris Judd is simply a winner and if they want to win any player argument they just have talk about him. Kids get excited talking about these guys.

Attitude: Kids don't want to be depressed like you after a loss or even a Collingwood win, so you've got to stay upbeat and draw on the positives and never criticize the Heroes - just keep pumping them up.

There are many other things you can do to "Trick" them instead of actually brainwashing them. Think of the little things you think will work with your kid.

Good Luck.

  ahh.....so many wasted opportunities..if I'd only known.

I think you could threaten to take him back to the orphanage.
It worked for me...sure..I now have to pay for years of therapy for the kid..but hey..

My girl went for the Tigers in Primary school...for about 6 months...peer pressure.
Tried understanding..and being nice...
ended up having a jolly good 'now look..and see here..and gosh...this won't do....type talk..said as others suggest..they should be her 2nd team...and how it was a family thing..and she could change teams after she left home etc...
It all went away...
but I think mainly because she fell out with the girls who were rabid Tiger supporters. For her it was just a social thing, and still is...but she is 100 per cent navy blue now.

My kids experimented with recreational team swapping.
I beat it out of them.

My 6yo son has taken an intense interest in AFL this year. Wears his number 5 Carlton Guernsey whenever possible, reads the paper with me, attends a few games and just soaks up whatever he can about Carlton and AFL in general.

He watched our final with me and was very disappointed when we lost. Unfortunately after that he decided to ‘adopt’ the Filth for the remainder of the finals, and took an intense liking in Dane Swan. Needless to say I was thrilled when Juddy ‘took Charlie home’, and for a week or two it seemed to sway him right back to the Navy Blue.

His passion while barracking for the Filth during the GF replay was far too over the top for my liking, and yesterday he muttered the unthinkable “Dad, I’m going to barrack for the Magpies next year”. A stern lecture from me about loyalty and not just backing winners, and a reminder that he a) won’t have a footy jumper to wear and b) won’t get to attend any of his teams games, seemed to jolt him back to reality. Fortunately he took little interest in today’s Hun and the 16 page filth liftout quickly found its way into the bin.

Cricket season can’t come quickly enough.

So what to do? Let him swap? Not an option IMO. I don’t think he’s old enough to fend for himself out on the streets at night. Try to brainwash him more? Perhaps a visit to the Carlton shop is in order. What a pity we don’t have a great Hall of Fame to visit like the Bummers (or do we?).

Help me please, it’s a defining moment of his young life.

Swap the kid....

Toughen up on this one...

A few years ago I was in the same situation, so I went to Carlton training and got Kouta to video a message into my phone:

"G'day this is Kouta, if you don't start barracking for the Blues, I gonna come and get ya!!..." (what a top bloke)

We sent it to my son's phone and he must have played it to every kid in the school ground. Now he's a Carlton tragic, like me!!

CFC, if you are reading this - this should be used as a membership drive. Send paid members a message from the players, that they can then send to friends that should be members - it's called viral marketing, people!!

I seriously can't belive we don't do this...would cost us NUTHIN!!

I was a bit slack with mine - just assumed that they'd naturally follow the old man.

Got a bit of a scare though back in '07.

We live practically opposite Kardinia Park and, wtf, the Cats go and win their first flag in a million
or so years. All the kids are wearing these horrible jail suit jumpers and when registering for his
first Auskick, mine wants to enter "Geelong" as being his team. So I did. Then I set to work.

I don't give the kids much in the way of lollies or treats, but every time Carlton was on the tele
they'd be invited to watch and every time Carlton kicked a goal everyone got a lollie. And when
I'd take them to a game ... it was treat city.

And guess what? It worked a treat! All three now have Navy Blue jumpers, (they're 4, 6 and 8 ),
with the numbers #3, #6 and #30. (I get #5)

So my advice? Bribe 'em !!

Fortunate my lad only started taking an interest during 2008 as a 4 year old. Feel sorry for anyone trying to convert between '02-'07. Think there's laws against such treatment. Not sure a Ricky Mott poster is going to impress anyone.

Mine flirted with the Saints for a week, but that was only because he thought he couldn't barrack for Carlton because I did, or Essendon* because his uncle did, etc as he thought he had to 'pick a team that wasn't taken'.

x1000 the bribery route. Seen it work in plenty of other cases.

A mate of mine unfortunately a Richmond supporter has 3 kids and they all follow Richmond.

I asked him how did it.

He told them that he would never take any of them down to a game to watch their teams play. He would never
buy the kids any footy apparel unless it was Richmond colors. They wouldn't be allowed to watch their teams play on TV unless
it was Richmond.

As soon as he got one on side, it wasn't hard to get the other 2 to follow cause they didn't want to be the ones to miss out.

So basically i would tell your son, Its Carlton or you can go without. !!!!!

Brilliant feedback this...most of it  . Thanks.

Good signs this morning. He saw a photo of Wallker in the Hun under a Trade Week banner and asked what it was all about. I said it’s the week where clubs can swap players. He asked “who are we getting”. I said “Who is who getting?”. He replied “Carlton”. :smoking:

I’ll keep working on him though, a systematic brainwashing over summer that will include replays of the StK and Geelong games, maybe even the 99 prelim (he hates the scum) and the 95 GF. A Junior Blue membership early next year, a visit to the family day and training where he can hopefully grab a photo with a player. If all that fails, a good old fashioned flogging.

Good luck with keeping the son barracking for the blues. My daughter back in 95 was an avid Carlton supporter (only 6 at the time). Not sure when it occured, (hubby is a Collingwood member) but she turned. Last Saturday i had to sit and watch her barracking for the filfth and watching replays and even buying the dvd of the gf. Not only do i have a Collingwood supporter husband and daughter but my son also barracks for them. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
At least one daughter is on board and hates Collingwood with a passion, thats my girl. One out of 3 is not really good enough and it makes me wonder if we had not gone through such a terrible decade we may have a few more young supporters.

Good news on trade week, but good luck explaining getting draft picks (or players they've never heard of) for players they love!

Fev deal was a nightmare last year.

All I could come up with was telling him that Hendo was even taller than me, and somehow that won him over. :screwy:
