that said Malthouse's history also shows he recruits certain types and plays a certain way and it takes years for him to craft a team. those expecting him to come to the blues and deliver instant success are dreaming. he would need up to 5 years and basically I think he is too old to put in another 5 yr stint

Wrong!! He got the Pies into their first GF under him after 3 years with a very average list. Imagine what he'd do with our list!!

Carrazzo wouldn't get a game.

Of course he's a good coach. Would he come to Carlton - no. This was discussed back in July...in the Mick Malthouse thread.

You're supposedly a moderator and you're spreading rumour and innuendo? Do you honestly think for one second that Peter Sidwell (Malthouse Manager - who detests Carlton) would even entertain the idea of talking with a Carlton board member about the interest we may have in a coach whose team is about to play in a Grand Final, who's contracted to Collingwood for next year and beyond, who's very comfortable where he is until he gets to 60 (in 2013), and then goes & retires. This is a man who has been continuously involved as a player or coach since season 1972. The Collingwood Football Club are already making plans to honor him for '40 years' in 2012 when he'll still be with that club.

In other words....forget about it.

I don't know Sidwell personally (sounds like an interesting bloke) but he was contacted by Swann and Sticks during our slump 2/3 through the season. I'd hope that my manager wouldn't let his petty allegiances interfere with doing his job. Anyway you're probably right Malthouse is not a realistic target.

Forget Malthouse
Get the best available
Get Buckley
Does the major turnaround in Pie Play coincide with his arrival on the coaching panel?
He's not available?
If he was available he wouldn't be the best.

BTW this is all conjecture
Ratts isn't going anywhere.

Buckley and playing group "leaders" worked on new game style.
Players believe in it, very much like Geelong did/do with there's as well and that is the reason it's working currently.

Ratten & comp. need to spend sometime on this plan over the summer and counter act it in 2011. Also really like the idea of player involvement and belief.

Most clubs with coaches coming out of contract at the end of next year will talk to Malthouse's manager. There are not a lot of Premiership coaches around and with Roos and Thompson retired there are not a lot of others available. Malthouse would be one and the board at any club would be remiss not to try and seek the best available. It may never happen but unless you ask or let his manager know you would be interested if he decide to continue coachking then you may not get him.

Malthouse has publicly expressed that he feels he could continue as a senior coach and it may be that Nathan Buckley may feel better without Malthouse in the background. Towards the end of next year anyhing could happen so let's wait to see who is available and whether or not it is realistic option.

Caro said last night she believes MM will coach elsewhere beyond next year. This will be one of those boring ongoing sagas next season.

There is a reason that Collingwood is moving him on. Malthouse is an old style coach with old style habits. He has been forced to accept more feedback from his assistant coaches which IMHO has resulted in Collingwood performing exceedingly better. He is an egomaniac who wont take advice, refuses to accept any form of criticism and has not allowed himself to be reviewed since he started at Collingwood.
Every year the football department goes through a full review except Malthouse. Last year they reviewed his role (without his participation) and he has been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Yes he has contributed to their success to date but he's still a long way from being an ideal coach. Eddie and co. have him under strict control which wouldn't happen at our club. You need strong personalities to manage someone like Malthouse and we're kidding ourselves if we think Sticks and co. would perform that task. He is a self confessed control freak which is the last thing we need.
Look to the future.

You obviously don't read the papers or watch TV. The first was a press conference....held on August 17, went live on OneHD announcing that Roos is to become Head Coach of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy. Followed up the next day with coverage in Melbourne and Sydney papers, radio and TV. The second was a national media release (2 weeks ago) that received coverage on radio, internet and print media announcing that Roos would join the Fox Sports AFL commentary team for the 2011 season.

Take this as you will. Heard Terry Wallace speak yesterday at a GF lunch. Never short of an opinion as we know. He thinks the Magpies succession plan is destined to fail as Malthouse has had it imposed on him as opposed to Roos who implemented it himself. Wallet said Malthouse was the best coach he played under and has only got better. Finds it impossible to believe that Malthouse will step away from coaching when he’s still clearly right on top of his game, and potentially with one or dare we say it, back to back Filth flags under his belt. He also said Buckley is on a hiding to nothing given the Magpies result this year and possibly next, and that they may have come on even quicker than they imagined.

..and what if the Pies fail to take out the major prize? Will everyone still be pumping up a senior coach who hasn't won a flag in 18 years of trying?
