Alas, the opinion of experts wasn't good enough for Collo and co. and the ground was built like it was.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Collo was at the AFL when Docklands Stadium was built and sent to work there later on when it was a basketcase. As such he had no involvement in which direction the ground faced.

I also fail to see how the direction the ground is built contributes to it having trouble growing grass. It would have little impact on how much sinlight it receives. In fact if you look at this photo, I'd only imagine it receives more sunlight facing this direction than it would if the goals faced East-West

Correct.

the problem is the ground was initially designed for Soccer and Rugby, ie: to host a square field. When Channel 7 got the AFL to chip in their cash, the plans were changed to make it an oval, but the roof plans didn't change.

Hence, the stadium has always been, and always will be EPIC FAIL.

Article in the HUN said that Ratts complained to the AFL re the roof being opened as we had the sun in our eyes during the 1st qtr.

The AFL said the roof was closed partially but you had to expect sun glare with an open stadium.

In other words the AFL told him to @#$%&! off

I agree with Ratts, being there you could clearly see that in the first qtr we were disadvantaged kicking to the Southern end.

Question - Name another AFL ground that runs North/South :?:

Footy Park
SCG
Homebush Stadium
Manuka Oval
Kardinia Park
York Park
Marrara Stadium

It's a huge issue, and it's going to happen again this Sunday.

I want them to leave it open when it rains even lightly, but ALWAYS close it in the sun. The shadows are incredibly strong, unlike at the G, and you really can't see what's happening properly. The toss at the start of the game is the equivalent of a 2-3 goal wind advantage and that's a bit of a disgrace when they could prevent it

You will find that if its cloudy on Sunday, the roof will be closed (rain or no rain) :donk:

KB and Doctor Turf were talking about it on SEN this morning and I agree with their suggestion that the roof always be closed for sporting events at the stadium. We should accept that the stadium is unique among AFL stadia because of the roof facility and should take advantage of this facility. This would remove any need to worry about the vagaries of the weather and also ensure fairness for all competing clubs.

My mate left his premium level 2 seats at half time to go stand down the bottom because he couldn't see a f$%^ing thing. Some fans were making hats out of newspapers.

Long range for Sunday says partly cloudy, scattered showers. Surely the hint of a shower should be enough for it to be shut.

I'm not sure why the roof is left open for day games.

A portion of the ground in glary sunlight that causes difficulty in seeing the ball for players in that area.

Looks ridiculous on tv with continual camera light adjustments.

Common sense please!

You should have tried sitting in the Sth East pocket on level 2!! The missus and I could not see jack 5hit, we were looking straight at the low winter sun!! To make matters worse, we started getting sunburnt after an hour or so. Just another notch on Ian "flower Up" Collins' belt!! The guy is the most non-Carlton Carlton man ever.

WTF? You do realise Collins was appointed to Docklands some years after the stadium was designed, changed for AFL, approved and built, don't you?

WTF? You do realise I was talking about not closing the roof don't you? The guy is a friggin dunce, it's one flower up after another and he answers to no one. At least not publicly. Time to show some accountability Collins ya scumbag.

Mate I must be unpopular around here. You people just miss my point entirely for favour of having a crack. Play the post and not the poster.

Yeah, nah, fair enough. I thought you meant he had some hand in the overall shit design of the stadium.
