I had to check the date on this thread.
I dont think being a site sponsored player has ever helped the player avoid criticism

Why does everyone in here seem to get hot in the tweeds over Paul Bower? I mean, yes, the site sponsors him which is fair enough but on the ground, he certainly doesn't live up to the reputation that this site affords him. IN pure footytalk terms he is NUTS. (Not Up to Scratch).
He struggles against good opponents, his skills are questionable, his decision making is pretty much confusing and when he does get the ball, he runs around in a panicked state like a rabbit in the headlights. I don't understand why Carlton supporters seem to think he is the panacea for our defensive ills.
Granted, he is better than Thornton which is not saying much, but surely he isn't as good as the reputation people in here heap upon him.
I have seen him 'developing' since his first game against Sydney late in the season a few years ago and I have to say that in my opinion, he still doesn't give us a great deal.

His marking needs to improve, his disposal skills likewise, his defensive efforts against good opponents and his decision making. In my opinion, he tries to do to much with the ball (a-la Billy Bob Thornton) and too many turn-overs result.

What does he do that I don't see yet so many others do??/

Might be time to buy some glasses.

I'm not a rose-coloured glasses wearer, but Bower is becoming a superb footballer.

Tall, uses body well in a contest, quick, can cover for his teammates, deceptively good kick, takes the game on, prepared to take a risk, can take a mark, good spoiling.

One of the stranger threads I've seen. Bower is a future All Australian and a very important player.

I'm excited about the prospect of seeing Bower, Walker, Jamo, Army, Russell and Joseph playing in the same team. The fastest backline in the league by a mile

Apart from Russell that group may lack a class long kick but they're all around 21-24 years old. In 2 years they'll be stronger and more poised.

I'm bias so my opinion probably wont count. He's a gem. At just 22 and with 47 games in the bank he is just starting to really look the goods. If we ever got to a Prelim or GF he will be CHB and the guy he plays on will be hard pushed to beat him. Currrently bench pressing 140kg which is no mean feat. He's quick, agile and is only going to get stronger.

I understand where you're coming from if we took a hot tub and miraculously went back in time to 2007. However the continual development of PB can't be faulted. 3 years ago he'd give me a heart attack every time he took off like a chook without its head. At one stage this daredevil act cost him valuable time on the sidelines as it left him vulnerable to a fierce Geelong tackle.

In 2009/10 PB is now much more aware of the space around him. His peripheral vision seems to have improved and he uses the better option available to him far often than not. His closing speed is fantastic, his centre of gravity extremely good and he has learnt to not chop the arms of the defender - a skill that many of his contemporaries in the backline have failed to master.

PB is also a good reader of the play. He's able to size up early on whether he can leave his opponent and get a fist to a contest to assist Jamison or one of the others.

He is very coachable, which after 5 or so years in the system isn't always a remaining trait once these guys have played over 50 games. His teammates love him. He's loyal and a real team player. Although I don't get 'hot in the tweeds' for PB, I can tell you now that people in football - players, coaches and those who know their stuff - think this guy is actually PDG (Pretty Darn Good).

Well put Doc.

Hehe so did I!

Thought it was an oldy that someone had rehashed to take the piss of the OP.

Seriously....any idiot (like me for instance) can see he's going to be a very very good footballer.

Still only 22? Gosh

This is what a lot are missing C-Man

Started as a stick insect for a kpp and is still getting stronger every year, and the strengthening looks like continuing for a few years yet. Probably this is his 1st season where he has adequate body size for a genuine CHB.

Add to that he has a huge tank. While other teams rotate players on Revolt, PB runs off him in the last qtr. Came off a quad injury to outrun all comers in a 31 disposal game after being short of a gallop.

Also perfecting the art of working his opp (on the lead) under the ball using his chest.

MK,JW,PB,206.74 all great tanks for big fellas.

True. At last years B&F Bower was coming 2nd after 13 rounds. No one there was surprised one bit.

He was also either second or third in the AFL for one percenters at the time as well

Commentators are commenting on how we have improved down back, but they always seem to be adding especially when you consider Bower is to come back in. It isn't just us rating him.

He can still have the odd brain fade in possession and he still has a bit of work to do on handling being dragged deep into defence, but the bloke is going to be a gem for us. We just need to get him healthy.

I had the same thought.

I see PB as a 22yo hard running line breaking courageous key position defender with great hands.
I don’t think I’m alone with this opinion!!

PB & Tex are part of our best 22 IMO.

No doubt Bower & Jamo are the men for the Carlton back half for our next flag. No doubt.

This isn't the most ridiculous thread I've ever read.

I just can't remember the others though.

Can't take a person who can't spell the world's most populated country seriously. It's C-H-I-N-A.

Anyway, PB's been good. Just look at his SC average this year (ahem...doesn't matter that it's only for two games...ahem...). Just need him back to settle my backline!!!
