Honestly, I find cheer squads an embarassment.

I mean, good on em for giving up their time to stick crepe paper together, but really...

NO CHEER SQUAD HERE!!!!
This was the GROG SQUAD circa '84 - 93

Does anyone know if there is a grog squad at games these days?? Like, one that stands in the same spot each week with the same people?

Agreed

Seriously, when a player from another team lines up for goal, and they rip out those giant pom poms or whatever the !@#$%& they are, I cringe. How is something so corny meant to put off another player?

I think that is a bit rough.

It is called team support. We can't all sit up the back and clap politely when a goal is scored. I think it adds atmosphere.

They just had American basketball (college) on tv and the crowd go crazy in those matches trying to put opposition off - jumping up and down as if they are at a rock concert. It looks a bit out of place (but I am not American so don't fully understand that type of cheering for a non-contact sport).

I don't know how anyone can take non-contact team sports like basketball and soccer seriously and get that worked up about such sports... but obviously many people do. Horses for courses i guess.

Just 4 years back I was on the Blues Cruise from Opera House to Homebush. What a great day. Amazing.

Our reserved seating was with the Cheer squad.
What I saw was very different to the cheersquads of the 70's.
All sorts there.
At one stage I had to pull a couple in line for the abuse they were hurling at our own players.
They were damn close to a belting.

Nevertheless, I would like to see a bigger cheersquad contingent for the same reason tap in 79 suggests: adds to the atmosphere and shows support. The more of them, the closer the support feels like a home game when playing away.

Dan,
I still see plenty of the guys at games. Most of us ( include ME!) have grown up...sorta, married and have kids coming to games with us.
There are still a few Die Hards who still stand together at both the G and the Dome. At the Dome it is down the Spencer St Station ( who knows what goal kicking end it is) most days to the left of Gate 2.

I seem to remember them singing the Porky Pig theme song at various times/games. I`m not sure why they did but i had an idea it was in reference to Harmsey in the later part of his career.

I was in standing room at the 82 GF when the streaker ran on. I yelled out, "Jenny, get back home with the kids!" and made about 15,000 people laugh.

You had to be there
