Goddard and Wells were the biggest kick in the guts ever. We were woeful, we were last and we were never compensated (well we did get French by trading pick 18).

When Hamill left, I was at work, and this die hard St Kilda supporter came up to me and goes 'Hamill to St Kilda', I got so upset. I had to leave my desk and have a sook, and I had some of his pictures on my desk and I had to rip them off.

I could not believe it until I came home and saw the news and browsed the net.

I hate St Kilda with a passion and that was awful for me at the time.

Wasn't overly concerned about that one at the time given what we were getting in return in McKernan who I had always admired as a player. But Porter would have been quite a handy player, and certainly would have lasted longer than McKernan.

Justin Murphy's move to Geelong and to Essendon* with Matthew Allan (both times) gutted me a bit. The two of them just looked lost at the Bombers in 2004 and I'm fairly certain were finished by the end of that year. The problem with Murphy was that he could never settle down at one club, and was often on the move. Started at Richmond, came to Carlton, went to Geelong, back to Carlton, then to Essendon*. Although he played his absolute best footy with us without a doubt.

Gee, you certainly like yours hacks? Perhaps Captain Hack is more appropriate?

Porter was treated somewhat unfairly and should NEVER have been traded. The fact we picked up McKernan in exchange for him made it far worse.

Murphy and Allan were beginning to become cancers on the club and I'm glad we got rid of them. Clearly didn't want to be at the club and were more than happy to put their hand out for big dollars for minimal return.

McKernan a hack? You have got to be kidding me. This is a bloke who nearly won a brownlow, which is quite an achievement given the size and position he played. Also, 2 years earlier he had played in the '99 Premiership and for a the last 5-6 years at the time he was up there with North's best. 2001 may not have been his best year, but there is no denying the raw skill he had. Oh, and did I mention the Best & Fairest he won with our club?

I respect your opinion Phoenix and I hope you can do the same for me

Mick McGuane to Carlton.

Although probably annoyed many filth supporters at the time.

Fevola comes to mind right away, however, thinking outside of Fevola I would have to say that the Aaron Hamill move at the end of 2000 was probably one that upset me the most. The man was a machine, would do the job, uncompromisingly and effectively, and hearing one morning that he was on the move really left a hole in me as a supporter/fan of his and a massive hole in the team. He had a stellar year and at the time, along with Koutoufides, he was one of my absolute favourites. I used to love the way he went about his footy.

With Fevola traded to Brisbane recently, it got me thinking, which player moves over the years have hit you the hardest? Whether it was because you were a mad fan of theirs, they were a star player for the team or they had the potential to grow into a star at the club...
Thoughts?

Hamills last game was at the G in the prelim/qual final against Melb. We were 3/4 goals up at 3/4 time, he got a knock to the head and didn't take the field in the last term. We lost...it was the start of our downfall. He never played for us again, Whitnall was completely lost without him. It was the start of his decline as well.
At least when he went to the Aints he was a shadow of his former self. I always thought he was a bit soft leaving over some comments from Big Jack. Lost my respect.

I might be wrong, but i think Hamills last game was against Essendon* when we got knocked out of the finals. We played Melbourne in the first week of the finals and lost, then beat The Lions and the lost to Essendon* is the prelim.

Simon Minton-Connell as part of the diesel deal. Mind you Greg Williams somewhat softened the blow... but I was always a big fan of SMC

Gees, I'll say it. McKernan was a hack by the time we got him. And how we can have the likes of McKernan and Murphy in the same thread as Brent Crosswell is.... well ...... sacrilege. Crosswell was a quadruple premiership player, was clearly BOG in our most famous premiership win ever, and could do anything. McKernan was the classic coodabeen. Had a couple of good seasons, but with that physique and that talent, should've been elite....... and definitely wasn't.

And Murphy. Well to tell you the truth, he was one of my favourites. But I can't for the life of me tell you why. I just liked him, but gee what a frontrunner. And an absolute dislike for getting the hard ball. He was (in the words of Jack Dyer), a good ordinary footballer.

And regarding Peter Francis, who arguably could've won the first Norm Smith medal (except that Harmes was the sexy choice because of that boundary line thing and because he was Len Smith's grandson).

Francis could've ended up one of Carlton's greats. Would've played in 3 and possibly 4 flags. Demonstrated that he could lift in the pressure cooker atmosphere of finals games. And got lost to Fitzroy because Lofts had a hard-on for Marchesani, who had exquisite skills, had beaten Bruce Doull once in a game against Fitzroy, and who was so soft, he'd make Jordan McMahon look like Glen Archer.

I was gutted when we lost Francis.

Oh, and I forgot one more - Robert Walls.

So there you have it.

1970 Premiership BOG: Crosswell ----------------> gawn
1972 premiership BOG: Walls --------------------> gawn
1979 Premiership BOG: Francis ------------------> gawn

Being BOG in a Carlton flag team in the 70s sure was a jinx....

Some of the old-timers here have much more to say on this topic than we anyone post-1980.

In my time, the only departure that really hurt was Hamill and that was because of the circumstances.

Otherwise we've been pretty fortunate in holding on to required players and players we've traded not really turning out to be much good. Simon Minton-Connell and Chris Bond being two that did make some impact elsewhere, but nothing to be too upset over.

McKernan may have been a hack when we got him, but he won the B&F for us one year so he was better than most in the team at the time!!!

Oh my gosh, what a nightmare Mansfield to Carlton was.

I remember being in Bali, the same time the Geelong players were having their end of season trip. From our room, we heard the Carlton theme song being sung, we looked out and it was Mansfield and the geelong boys. He must have known then he was coming to Carlton.

I did not no at the time, but found it strange ...... Arghhhhhh I could not swallow him playing for Carlton.

I'm too young for crosswell, Francis etc

but in the modern era I don't think we've faired too badly.

Imagine how gutted weagles supporters must have been when judd left - don't think you can compare the pain of losing JK to that.

Or what about how feral saints fans must feel after losing Luke ball for nothing in return.

Losing campo irritated me, but I wasn't gutted. Losing hamill sucked, but i would have preferred that he got squeezed out rather than lose kouta

fev was a different story, and it's sad but I'm not gutted.

We are doing pretty well as a club lately, and we are only going to get stronger and more tight knit in the years ahead.
