Firstly, I have not seen any evidence of his intellect (in fact, quite the opposite) so dispute your first point.

Secondly, if you are right that he is "by nature, extremely shy", then why are we letting him coach our side, or why is he coaching at all. Was John Kennedy shy? Was David Parkin shy? Was Ron Barrasi shy? Was Leigh Matthews shy? No, they were strong willed extroverts that brought and demanded the best out of their playing group.

We have the talent to win a premiership or premierships but not the coach. I don't want to be St Kilda, I want to be Carlton.

In saying all that, it breaks my heart that he is not up to it because I loved him as a player and remember bleeding for him when he was stuck in a back pocket before they realised how good he was really going to be.

I guess it feels like that last bit to me...like it's too soon to be making these assumptions and accusations.
Maybe we don't yet know how good he is going to be as a coach?
As for being more of an introvert...i don't think that is necessarily a bad thing.Skill and subtlety might be just what's needed with a group that are supposed to b e largely of that very same temperment.
Let's give it at least another year, don't you think?

No way. Years run out for all of us and I am not prepared to accept mediocrity for the sake of someone I admired as a player. I want premierships now and often. And I can't stress enough, I do not want to be St Kilda - a team of first round draft picks that accomplish nothing. We are better than that because, to quote Sticks, "We are Carlton..." but that only hoolds water for so long.

These are a sample of coaches regarded as either successful or highly competent. Ratten may not yet have the self-assuredness that these coaches do, but I don't think one has to be an extrovert to be a successful coach. We'll see if he has the "strong will" required. I didn't think Ross Lyon had a charismatic enough personality to be a successful coach, and while St Kilda didn't win the premiership, what more could he do? In some capacity, they must all have demanded the best from their players. Ratten may be starting to show he has the strong will required, evidenced by dropping Stevens and Scotland. I don't know how much of a part he played in getting rid of Fev, but he certainly supported the decision.

I certainly don't know whether Ratten is a good coach, or whether he'll be a successful coach. If he can't demonstrate his ability to implement a gameplan, mould the playing group and show strategic competency next season then I will agree with those opposed to his position. Until then, however, he'll have my support and my hopes, and above is merely evidence to say that one need not be a boisterous and tough personality to be a good coach.

Ratten can give the players any message he likes, but what is needed will be new strategies now that Fevola is gone.

Those new strategies are out there - and although player development is still needed, the football ability to deliver them is here at Carlton.

So we will now see what transpires.

Ratten queues a powerpoint presentation on a screen. Picture of a set of goals comes up on the screen.

Ratten:
"Can anybody tell me what these are...."

nothing happens, players sit scratching thier heads and whispering to each other.

Ratten:
"come on...come on...what's this on the screen..."

at the back of a the room a timid, hesitant hand goes shakily up

Ratten:
"you there....at the back, stand up son, what is it on the screen"

David Ellard stands up

Ellard:
"is it a set of goals...???"

Ratten:
"BINGO!!........ guys say hello to our new Full Forward!!"
