Russell needs to be cut some slack. He was outstanding in the first quarter and then kept trying all day. He was one of the few who kept trying to run and carry after 1/4 time in order to break through the Crows zone - yes a few clangers but he wasnt on his own.

As far as kick-ins, he was obviously following team instructions - don't go short, if no optios then kick it long to Kruezer (you may have seen Johnson do the same!). I find it hard to blame the player kicking in for no Carlton player being prepared to get in front of the pack when it is punched forward. Would hate to think our much vaunted mid-field might get their hands dirty when it gets hard.

Only Pro's that I saw where:

Gibbs - kept at it all day
Yarran - worked really hard and is really beginning to show why we rated him so highly
Armfield - important player in the team, real dash
Stevens - before Judd took him out

Some of the worst where:

Murphy - very soft today, I hope he had a virus
Simpson - very soft today, I hope he had a virus
Walker - maybe those who rubbish Russell need to have a long hard look at the #2 pick in the same draft.
Johnson - enough said
Browne - I am afraid he is nor really up to it, not big or quick enough, poor disposal and bad decisions
Wiggins - may have been his last game for the Blues

Having a go at 1AW when he's played a handful of games in two seasons is pretty weak to be honest...

1AW works hard but his disposal and decision making can be awful at times.

Pro's

We don't play Essendon* this week
We play Brisbane this week

Con's

We play Brisbane at the Gabba.

I have noticed this year that the games that we have lost by 40+ pts, we won the following game. That is what I am hanging onto !!!!!

I thought it was good that Walker found the ball and ran well.

OK he turned it over but so did Judd. Nearly every handball of his hit the ground.

Walker was awful......like really bad.

OK he had a few mates out there last night but he really is struggling.

Should play the season out at the ants (if they have further games) and his long term future should be reconsidered at seasons end.

Adds nothing to the team at the moment.

I think thats wrong....

Everybody played a shocker....

Players use the ball better when they know what theyre doing.

For instance.... Walker was BOG against Melb last week in my books... but we wernt being torn to shreds by an organised outfit....

When youre organised you play better....

The side wasnt organised enough against a very well organised Adelaide...

But we wouldnt be a better team without Walker and his run.....

We just need to be better organised rigfht throughout .......and then we get the most out of our players...

PROS
We can win next week but it will be tough at least we now have an opportunity for a really great win over the Lions at the Gabba
I saw Burton's mark
I saw a team that is excellently coached that is tough, disciplined, skilful, thatb have drafted brilliantly down the draft and that can win a flag.

CONS
That team wasn't Carlton
Looked like men v boys. We looked so rattled
Over handballed - how can we have more possessions and get totally flogged?
Terrible set up. L:et Crows run the ball out of defence with no-one in front of them. The defence struggled but really our midfield pressure was embarrassing
Fev is a super talent but still stages for frees, whinges to the umpire when he doesn't get them and chases occaionally. If he played like a leader he would be a Carlton great, but after ten years and a week out from our biggest game this century he plays on pure talent - of which he has heaps - but just doesn't show leadership when he doesn't have the ball
Juddy has been a superman but looks like a mere mortal at the end of a long season
We are soft and lack real hardnuts who crunch into packs
Our kick outs are a joke

Pros

- fevola did well contending with rutten + stevens + vozzo + mcturdy
- thought hammer was OK, especially his tap work
- gibbs tried hard but i wish he would stop his personal waxing thing with fevola
- russell was authoritative and dashing in that 1st qtr. made a series of clangers after that BUT he kept putting himself in a position to DO / TRY something and stick to the game plan rather than hide and play the "don't kick it to me" rubbish like murphy.
- stevens had a strong 1st qtr and was probably our most consistent midfielder. he actually tried to be the modern midfield player of being both inside and outside, well at least that's how it seemed from the ground.

Cons

- very very soft performance! seeds probably sown the week before when the side turned on that bruise-free effort against a melb side in experimentation / tanking mode.
- murphy was verrrrrrrrrryyyy disappointing. he really gave nothing. while russell was struggling with his kick ins murphy was just standing on the periphery doing nothing.
- crows may have mentally destroyed us for next week.
- plenty of guys who have been OK - eg bower, thornton - had shockers so they can be cut slack. walker has not played against opposition of that quality and intensity all year so also should cop some slack.
- absolutely sick of watching us play into their hands time after time with our solitary, kick it to fev, forward entry plan. we will never challenge for top 4 unless we develop a truly multi-pronged attack.
- no steel in this side. one guy who can lift us by example had his arm held at every stoppage by doughty, while the other keeps having to beat 2 defenders. you can sense the team deflate every time a forward entry breaks down cos fev has to overcome so much.
- mcburney couldn't spot any chopping of the arms or push in the backs on fev, yet spent the entire 3rd qtr time huddle with security pointing to something he spotted in the crowd - KNOB. i like the ump who couldn't bounce the ball but called a few horrible sideways bounces OK cos perhaps they may not have technically exited the circle :screwy:

Con:
* When we give up we really give up. our drop off in intensity and skill in the third quarter in particular was pretty disturbing - much like the Essendon* match. Is this leadership?
* After great forward pressure in the first, they just got through easily thereafter. ratten seemed to try everyone but without Robinson, garlett and betts to cover they just got through too easily

adds nothing to the team??
... most ridiculous statement made this weekend.
takes the game on, attacks the ball and tries to be creative. no way was he our worst player yesterday. while i'm here, can anyone tell me what chris johnson adds to our side? because whatever it is, i cant see it!

I think walker did struggle big time but it seems due to the pace of that first quarter was more match fitness than anythin..and some of our boys were suckin in wind big time in those early quarters

What a disappointing loss yesterday. Our mids were not willing enough to run back and flood while Adelaide's mids ran so hard in both directions and killed us on the counter attack. Once they gained momentum we just dropped our heads and just wanted to get through unscathed. Adelaide is a very well drilled side and exposed us defensively but they are not a 12-goal better side than us.

So I guess yesterday proved that offensively we can match it with any team, but defensively (and this relates to all over the ground, particularly in the midfield) we are one of the worst. We seriously need a defensive midfielder and a CHB as pretty much all of our midfielders are offensive (even Judd is getting exposed going the other way).

We need a defensive midfielder like Simon Goodwin or Jude Bolton and I feel Ratten has paid too much attention to what we do when we have the ball rather than what we do when we don't have the ball. Teams like Collingwood and Sydney (who have average lists) perform so well because they are very good defensively. Just look at how good Collingwood was against us last time we met.

I have no doubt we will be a very good side next year with the return of Jamison, Waite, Hadley and Robinson filling some gaping holes.

Yarran was brilliant yesterday and he will be a star. His game was the biggest positive. He has sublime skills, uses the ball well, is quick and his second efforts were fantastic. Anyone who says Garlett is better than him and should take his spot in the side next week has no idea at all.

Walker was the number two pick alright but not in the same draft - Roughead was the #2 in the said draft so what is your point exactly - Sorry dont answer that becuase you dont have one.

Wiggins as usual is selected because he is everyones whipping boy - heres a heads up - Gibbs [REDACTED] up on quite a few occasions tonight and cost as at least one goal because on lazy unaccountable/undisciplined/not doing the team thing football yet you list him as a positive because he kept at it - the same thing Wiggo does week in week out.

Murphy and Simpson soft :screwy: - just maybe their opponents and the opposition coaches ensured that they were never allowed an opportunity into the game - so just maybe some credit is due there.
