He's one of the fittest blokes at the club, and I think it's a fantastic story that he's been able to rise above his limitations and play such an important part in our team.. If you'd said to me a few years ago Carrazzo could be a premiership I would have laughed in your face, I was perhaps one of his biggest critics (big critical of Russell's too) both have made big improvements in their game, Carrazzo over the last couple of years and Russell more recently, really giving something that adds value to our team...
I still think players like Russell and maybe even Carrazzo would struggle to make the 22 in a team like Stkilda and win a premiership, but gee i'm proud of the way they've gone about their footy recently.. Altogether i'm very proud of the way Carlton has grown in leaps and bounds the last couple of weeks. Ratts has taken a step forward as a coach and I am very much looking forward to finals footy!!
So what you're saying is you have always rated blokes like Zac Dawson and Andrew McQualter ahead of the likes of Carazzo and Russell.
Most players need time. Not every kid adapts as quick as Joel Selwood et al.
Yes, once a player has reached their potential (assuming they make it) you’re right, they may not be the best players ever, but they can still play a role in a premiership side.
The Saints have taken time to mature, just as Geelong did. Hawthorn seemed to just get lucky and snatch one early, although their recipe is sound, so they should/could be thereabouts for a few more years yet.
After 2009 most Carlton fans will probably expect us to make top 4 in 2010. We may well do that, but we might also hang around somewhere from 5th-8th on the ladder for another year or two. I hope we don’t, but a premiership side is not built in a day.
It takes time for players to develop, and, perhaps more importantly, it takes time for a team to develop.
This is where I can sympathise with the anti-Ratten camp. My reading of that is not so much that they’re worrying about Ratten per se, but worrying that the players aren’t being given the best chance to develop and the best opportunities to reach their potential. I know one follows the other, but hopefully that makes some sense.
