I still think players like Russell and maybe even Carrazzo would struggle to make the 22 in a team like Stkilda and win a premiership, but gee i'm proud of the way they've gone about their footy recently.. Altogether i'm very proud of the way Carlton has grown in leaps and bounds the last couple of weeks. Ratts has taken a step forward as a coach and I am very much looking forward to finals footy!!

So what you're saying is you have always rated blokes like Zac Dawson and Andrew McQualter ahead of the likes of Carazzo and Russell.

Most players need time. Not every kid adapts as quick as Joel Selwood et al.

Yes, once a player has reached their potential (assuming they make it) you’re right, they may not be the best players ever, but they can still play a role in a premiership side.

The Saints have taken time to mature, just as Geelong did. Hawthorn seemed to just get lucky and snatch one early, although their recipe is sound, so they should/could be thereabouts for a few more years yet.

After 2009 most Carlton fans will probably expect us to make top 4 in 2010. We may well do that, but we might also hang around somewhere from 5th-8th on the ladder for another year or two. I hope we don’t, but a premiership side is not built in a day.

It takes time for players to develop, and, perhaps more importantly, it takes time for a team to develop.

This is where I can sympathise with the anti-Ratten camp. My reading of that is not so much that they’re worrying about Ratten per se, but worrying that the players aren’t being given the best chance to develop and the best opportunities to reach their potential. I know one follows the other, but hopefully that makes some sense.

Great to see Carrots finally being recognised. He has worked his butt off to improve his skills. But then this is not surprising - this is the guy who got up at 5 AM the morning after he won the B&F to go for a 10 Km run just to remind himself that he would not get ahead of himself and would keep working harder still to prove to all that he was not a 'one hit wonder'. Thats the stuff that makes a team culture.

And while I'm at it - as well as Carrots, there are 3 other players that are the essence of Carlton 'stuff'. All have been there all through the 'dark' years. It's no surprise that these guys are stepping up at this time.

Thorno - not many realise what he has put his body through over the last 7 years - totally dedicated and never takes a backward step
Simmo - simmo never gives anything lesss than 100% and like Thorno has been there all through the hard times
Waitey - it pains me to think he is not there over the next few weeks. Hell, I would give anything to see him out there

If we make it to the second week of the finals, Carrots will play his 100th and Thorno will play his 150th. Please God, let me be there to see that and a carlton win would be oh so fitting !!!

I've been really pleased for Carrots. He's worked bloody hard and he's reaping the rewards.

Good thread - considered doing it myself.

Anyone know how many times he hit Fev on the lead against Geelong? Must have been 5 times.

The kicking technique is still horrific, but he's made it work for him, at least when not under heavy pressure. He works his arse off to get free in space so he's getting his kicks off from dangerous possies

Carrazzo strength has always been to get plenty of the ball. He was leading possession getter in the U18 carnival whilst in the same draft as Hodge and Judd.

He has worked very hard to make those possessions effective.

He indicates that if you work on your weaknesses and play to your strengths you can only improve as a player.

Great story bluesy. Little things I've heard about Carrots over the years indicate a top quality person held in high regard at the club for work ethic and leadership. Your story is more proof of that.

I had my doubts that he had the class to hold his place in the team this year as the midfield developed and deepened, but he has taken his game to another level with the improvement in his disposal. Very inspiring example to the young playing group.

Fev was saying on the radio that he reckons carrots is a left footer!

Would he explain why his right boot wasnt much chop a couple of years back.

But thats changed now!!!

After seeing carrots development do ya think geelong could fit him in their best 22 now?

Thoughts anyone?

Prismall could not get a regular game so I would suggest Carrots might have been in the same boat.

..he's a v.smart footy player, and i reckon the most capable of getting possessions as well, for a whole host of reasons.. ..basically, when he has the ball the opposition doesn't, he's always going to have a place in our team for the simple reason of his ability to win ball [contested and uncontested].. ..he's done his bit by improving skills, now up to the coaches to do their bit and extract the most he has to offer..

Prismall could mainly play midfield, Carrazzo can play nearly everywhere in every role. He is the ultimate in the AFL in terms of adaptability, probably unrivaled in that regard. Speak to Cats fans, and most will not only have a place for him in their side, they'll tell you how much they're spewing he's not theirs!!

His skillz are getting better. Not l33t but still good.

He must be pulling a lot of chicks now. Girls love skills, you know, like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.
