Depends how big of a tear it is. The ACL does not repair it self. Partial tear still means the ligament and knee will be loose. Sudden change of direction, forceful imapct can easily rupture the ligament.

A partial tear means its still in tact. He will have to strengthen the knee with rehab. Some say you can continue on until you completely rupture the ACL but doing this means that Waitey could play a few more months then do it and wont be back till end of next year

Surely we have to err on the side of caution here. Anything that presents the risk of further damage has to be out of the question. If its surgery and 12 months, then do it.

It's been confirmed as a partial tear ... no word as to recovery time.

A partial tear can be worse than a complete tear... you have to live with the fear of it going at any moment. Especially the way Waitey plays.

He may be best served by a complete reconstruction and be back for rd.1 next season.

Look at the bright side everyone. If this keeps up we may be able to use injuries as an excuse ;)

full reco sounds like the way to go - dont like the thought of him coming back later this year and then doing it again because he didnt heal properly. Too important a player to take risks with and we arent expecting a flag this year.

it can, depends on how bad.

i did the same thing playing football, and doc suggested i would be better to wait, rather than do a full reco.

it all depends on how bad the tear is. most likely get an arthroscope, if its not torn enough that it can heal properly, may not go with the reco.

now that is me, i wouldnt have had half the facilities that will be made available for waitey.

now having said that, i never played footy again ..... but that was more a career choice ;)

Forget about playing for the rest of the year, if it can heal fully without surgery then surely that's the way to go. If possible, just aim to be right to go for the start of pre-season.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a ligament in the center of the knee that prevents the shin bone (tibia) from moving forward on the thigh bone (femur).

Image
If the ACL is torn, the knee joint may become unstable and affect the ability to perform work or athletic activities.

Image
ACL reconstruction is surgery to replace the torn ACL ligament. There are several choices of tissue to use for the new ligament, including an autograft (tissue from the patients own body) or an allograft (tissue from a cadaver). One of the most common autografts use part of the patellar tendon (the tendon in the front of the knee).

Image
The old ligament is removed using a shaver or other instruments. Bone tunnels are made to place the new ligament (patellar graft) in the knee at the site of the old ACL. Screws are commonly used to secure the graft in the bone tunnels, although other methods of fixation are used depending on the type of graft used.

Image
At the end of the surgery, the incisions are closed, and a dressing is applied. ACL reconstruction is usually a very successful surgery. The majority of patients will have a stable knee that does not give way after ACL reconstruction.

Rewoldt partially tore his ACL pre-season. Quick recovery for Waite is still a possibility.
