This is a toughie...

for me

1.SOS

2. Juddy

3. Jezza

4. Williams

5. Sticks

If Juddy can stick it out for a bit longer he will jump to #1 for me, and I have a sneaky suspicion 1 or 2 of our young kids might sneak into the list too. :smoking:

My top five are:

1) Bruce Doull - absolute legend of the game
2) SOS - As an ex-marcelin boy, I take extra pride in this man's achievements
3) Rod Ashman - Really was one of the legends of the mosquito fleet
4) Kouta - He actually changed the game, he was one of the first athelete footballers, his best was unbeatable
5) Buzza - He probably does not deserve to be on here because his career was so short, but I can not remember seeing a more spectacular player. Mark of the year, goal of the year and a premiership medal in his first season. He brought fans to the game and in his time he was one of the best in the league.

Aplogies to southby, Jezza, hunter.

Oh and I know that Williams is in a lot of people's top five, but I always thought that we kind of got him at the end od his career and to me he will be remembered more from his efforts at the Swans than at Carlton. I guess I never really forgave him for break the hyphen's jaw.

Jezza

Doull

SOS

Williams

Kerna

Don't remember Nicholls, I'm too young but so many champions have adorned our navy blue. Any of these would take the 'Best Ever' mantle at most clubs. I rate all of them above every other player except Ablett & Lockett - who would be in the mix with our boys. Ah the memories

Just to be clear, Parko's was only since 1991.

My best I've seen:

1. Nicholls
2. Jezza
3. Crosswell
4. Doull
5. Dominator

All awesome skills, courage, and above all - rose to greater heights on GF day...

Nick in best 5 players in 68 and 72, Jezza in 70 and 72, Crosswell in 70, Doull in 72 and 81, and Johnston in 79, 82, and 87. WOW.

Apologies to Sticks, Walls, Maclure, Fitzpatrick, Diesel, Braddles, Swan McKay, Buckley, Harmes, and Hunter.......

Edit: Oops, more apologies to SOS, Ashman, Trevor Keogh, Sheldon, Marcou....... It never ends. Once you stand up in a premiership team....... you're a star.

Edit 2: Oops again: More apologies to Kouta, Ratts, Madden...

The good thing about selecting a top 5 from this great club is the amount of players you have to apologise to for leaving out...remember there are other teams who would struggle to come up with a top 5....

These are based on who I've seen in my time:

1) Domintaor
2) Doull
3) Diesel
4) Bradley
5) SOS

I caught the last few years of Jezza, Crosswell & Nichols who had I seen more of in their prime (based on video footage, what the old man tells me and Mike Williamson.... )... would be in that top 5 for sure.

With all the Champions
They all deserve it
They all have earned it
But we know that there are many
To fit into Carlton's top 5 list

dadadadeda...

Too hard

I like Des English's reason for SOS at No. 1 and agree he's the game's best swingman followed by David Swan McKay. I'll stick to what I have always thought:

1. Nichols
2. Jezza
3. Kerna
2. SOS
1. Doull

Sorry to the other 154 worthy candidates, especially Southby, Diesel, Bradley, Kouta, Dominator, Mozzie fleet, Hunter, Walls....jesus there's a lot of champions...well that's Carlton for you

With all the Champions.....

1. SOS, best swing man the games ever seen

3. Kernahan, come the moment, come the man. Is there a better grand final record?
4. Bradley, just a freak. Skill, poise and professionalism
5. Johnston, second only to sticks on the big stage, loved watching him play Collingwood

Apologies to Kouta, Doull, Madden and McKay

Sticks was indeed a great...but I'm not sure his GF record was that impressive:

'86: 3 goals, well beaten by Langford in just about all contests.
'87: 3 goals, again well held by Langford in a game we ended up winning reasonably convincingly.
'93: 7 goals (5 points I think). IMO his best GF. Smashed Fletcher in every contest and was the only player of ours who sould hold his head up. I hate remembering this GF, we should have won! I'm certain that if "that" Michael Long goal had been called a point (touched by SOS-who was very adamant he'd actually touched it) the game may have panned out differently.
'95: Kicked 5 in a solid performance when almost the whole team could have kicked goals.

Best I've seen...(in no particular order-will take me too long)

Well to preface, we are Carlton and it's GF's we are about...so:

1: Harmes (you don't get 2 Norm Smiths unless you are quality and show up on the most important day of the season)
2: Wayne Johnston: knew how to raise his game in the finals.
3: SOS. Enough said about this guy's ability. '95 finals series speaks volumes (1 goal I think kicked by his direct opponent the best result)
4: Diesel: '95 GF was never going to be lost after the debacle of '93...and this guy made that certain. Had that arrogant air about him in any contest that smacked of Carlton. Just loved seeing a huddle of players around a contest then the ball flying out from the bottom of the pack to a running bradley, Hanna et al.
5: Sticks. Great leader, my fave Sticks memory is from round 4 '93 after missing OOF after the siren to draw with the Bummers in round 3 (despite rising from his sick bed to play and kicking 5 crucial goals). Round 4 against rivals Hawthorn at PP Stick marks with seconds left on the cliock (kicking towards the Heatley end). We are down by 2 points and Stuicks nails it from about 48 metres to give us the win and right the wrong of the previous week.

Go blues!

Too hard for me to go with a best ever, but the best that I have seen in full flight are as follows.

1) Bradley
2) SOS
3) Sticks
4) Diesel
5) Kouta (circa 99-2000)

I expect Juddy to make the top 5 easily before he's done.

Jezza was in his twilight when I was born, and I didn't see much of Doull and The Dominator to rank them with these guys other than highlights from the time.

Oh and cj who were Parkin's top 5

Parkins were from 91 onwards. In no Particular order:

Sticks
SOS
Diesel
Judd

were the only ones he named. Kouta was his 5th one but said he couldn't put him on the list after what Kouta said in first few chapters of his book

Gotta say, since 91, that would be hard to argue with!

Braddles could state a pretty good case....

Mine would have to be as follows - with #5 being controversial.....

1) Doull
2) Kernahan
3) SOS
4) Bradley
5) Syd Jackson - I still get amazed when I watch some of his skills on the Moving Wireless..... Fantastic effort and hustle....

With that - of course - there's Judd, and Kouta, and the Buzz, and Big Nick and heaps and heaps of legends.... Top 5s are fraught with danger - but I loved Parko's reasons for leaving Kouta out - though it was tongue in cheek - it does show that autobiographies can be tough on historical relationships! :)

I love that one, Danny.

I remember Syd's first game, at Moorabbin. We were behind the goals, and he streamed thru the centre and kicked one of those raking drop kicks right over our heads.

He was also a star in the 3rd quarter of "the" game (70 GF).

I love threads like this. The negative nellies HAVE to stay out because what could you say bad about those years???? Garry Crane doesn't really have a defined role in the team and his skills are poor???? Gags is not the future???? Kevin Hall is too unaccountable????? I cringe every time Serge has the ball in his hands?????? YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!

I loved Craney - one of the bravest ever! Him and Kenny Hunter.

Reading the article about Jezza, it makes you realise what a shame it is that so little remains in terms of footage from his career.

I love that mark he took where he sailed across bodies and then looked down as if he was surfing from a great height.

In terms of grand finals - he did some pretty freaky things, especially in the 1972 grand final. He got the confident strut going that day.

Harmes was the best I have seen. He had it all - speed, toughness, exceptional mark and kick. He could destroy Ayres in a tackle and also kick freak goals from the boundary line.... freak player.

I hope to see Judd, Gibbs, Murphy, Kreuzer and others add to the legacy of the greats mentioned... but I have to hope the present day players get rid of the show pony element (without the required grit) that seems to surface every so often in today's team. They have achieved nothing yet, so hopefully they can concentrate on the task at hand.

I love these threads. There are a lot of ways you can get around actually answering the question

I'm listing these in alphabetical order because I'm too gutless to rank them

Top 5 that I've seen play (I don't count Doull in this because I didn't see him at his best and at 10 years of age when he retired I didn't really know enough to appreciate it anyway).

Bradley
Kernahan
Koutoufides
Silvagni
Williams

Top 5 from what I've seen and heard and believe to be the best we've had

Doull
Jezza
Kernahan
Nicholls
Silvagni

Some points on maybe the top 10?

Bradley - was top-line over a long period of time and when you consider he didn't get here until he was already 22, he should have broken the record for games played.

Doull - I really caught the tailend of his career, have seen the Grand Finals he played in and heard all the stories, fabulous player, I really wish I'd been able to see more of him.

Jezza - My Dad's favourite player, his Dad said we had something special after his first game. Is an obvious choice among 'best fives'.

Johnson - Injuries and ...extra-curricular activities probably denied us seeing his best over a longer period, but his best was pretty damn good.

Judd - Has played 30 games which isnt enough yet and to be honest, most of his first season he wasn't at his best. Can't wait to make these lists in 10 years time though.

Kernahan - I think he gets rated on his last 5 years rather than his first 5. Was the best in the league in 88-90.

Kouta - Make no mistake he would have been in the Top 5 all-time if not for his injuries. Those 13 weeks in 2000 were the most dominant football we'll ever see.

Nicholls - My Dad's other favourite. Heard great stories about him growing up, couldn't play ruck in the modern era, but have no doubt he'd have still been a force as a forward.

Silvagni - FB of the century, probably wouldn't have made it if he'd played at CHB, but he was a better CHB amazingly, finished 3rd in the Brownlow the only season he played there for an extended time, my favourite player, but even that aside deserves a place in our best ever.

Williams - 100+ games is enough for him to be discussed in these lists, 4 elite years from 92-95 and was still dominating when he got a tap on the shoulder. Stuck it up the Bombers in his last ever game.

Ok, can't help myself...two more...

Hunter - Versatile, courageous, amazing. Again, injuries had caught up with him by the end which was a great shame.

Dean - A bit cheeky listing him amongst this elite company, but his character, desire, courage, determination, selflissness and heart deserve a mention. Our 'Best Clubman' award should be named after Peter Dean.

Hopefully The Blueseum and access to TV/DVD will ensure that in 50 years time supporters will be able to identify with todays heroes better than we can with those from our first 50-100 years because maybe guys like Vallance and Ken Hands really belong here.

As I am 28 now and my memory only goes as far back as about 87-88 watching the Blues, I will judge on the period I have seen, which is basically early/mid 90s onwards.

1. Diesel
2. SOS
3. Bradley
4. Kernahan
5. Ratts

I am surprised no one has mentioned Ratts, he was a super player and won a B&F in a premiership year. Sure, Kouta's best was probably better than anyones on that list, but all in the top 5 were better over a long period.

Other honourable mentions to Andrew McKay, Peter Dean & Michael Sexton (who was brilliant in the mid 90s), of the current crop I think Juddy is a certainty to get in there, with Murph, Gibbs and Kreuzer getting there. Fev? Well he is without doubt the best full forward we have had in this period, but consistency at this stage counts against him. However Kernahan had his share of dud games, but still contributed, and those dud games get fazed out of the memory because of all the telling contributions he made in big games. Hopefully Fev gets his chance to show his stuff in finals.
