Yes...but remember Kernahan put pen to paper in 1981, saying he would come across when he played in a Glenelg Premiership. That Kernahan came across at the same time as Mots and Braddles was only due to Glenelg winning in '85. But with what they had done in SA before they came - it was widely regarded that Motley was the complete package.

Hrmm I never knew about that, have never seen him in action I just know of him through my dads stories, and we dont have any tapes or the like from matches in the 80s apart from the 87 GF which of course was after the accident.

Motley, Bradley & Kernahan all made their SANFL "Teams of the Century" too. Goes to show how good they were considering only Sticks played more then 100 games for their club.

Motley was a freak. Pure and simple. IIRC, Sticks said that if Motts didn't have the accident his skill, demeanour & presence on the field could've/would've resulted in Carlton winning another flag or two in the era from 86 - 96. Big call, but he was that good.

Motley was the modern day footballer, playing in the hard tough 80's. He was a tough nut, skilled and balanced.

I have fond memories of watching Motts play against the Bays, wishing he'd play for Glenelg instead of Sturt.

He said it, but I'm not too sure if it would have occurred. In 1986 we were beaten by a far superior Hawthorn side with Mots playing a lot off half-back. By the time 1990 came around we were a pretty average team and with the Adelaide Crows being given the licence that year to join the competition in 1991, I have no doubt Mots would have been a high priority. No one knows what would have happened. Had he stayed - perhaps 1993-94 he could have made a big enough difference, and perhaps that was what Sticks was alluding to. Sadly, we never saw the best of Peter Motley - only glimpses of what was to come.

For the South Australians amonst the TC crew, I note this picture of a young Motley in Sturt colours but with AVCO as a sponsor as well. Was AVCO a long sponsor of Surt?

ps for those interested in Blueseum hit count, Motley just joined the top 100 pages on site, indicating strong interest in this tragic footy story.

...and while we're talking Sturt - can anyone tell me why Ben Judd never came over after we signed him?

A pic of Mots at the Sturt v Glenelg game yesterday. He lost a bet to Cornesy and had to toss the coin wearing a Glenelg jumper

Was watching him on Fox the other day in the '86 GF. The comparisons to Gibbs are spot on in terms of time standing still when he had the ball and his skills were superb. Being only 10 when it happened it didn't really hit home that hard, all that really registered was that he'd never play for us again. Great that he's leading a healthy life.

In '86, Mots (like Sticks, Braddles and Dora) was in his 1st season - and he was named in our best players in that year's GF. I feel sure that Mots would have been a star of the competition in the late '80s and early 90s. I'm not sure either that his presence would have resulted in another flag (although he would have helped us come VERY close to back-to-back flags in '87-'88), but there's no doubt that we would have been a better team during that period with him, and it wouldn't have surprised me if he'd won a Brownlow or a Norm Smith along the way....

I remember being devastated when we heard the news about the accident. In such a short time he had given immense joy. At our place he had already been annointed as the sucessor to the great Bruce Doull. Every great Carlton side has a dasher off half back with skill, pause and courage and Mots certainly filled that criteria. Terriffic overhead and a better kick than Gibba!!!

Hey, sjabc is that Peter's father Geof n the background on the left?

No, it's not Geof. He wouldn't be too far away though. I saw Motts & Geof at the Carlton v Power game and had a quick chat. Nice bloke and a legend of the game is Geof. A true SA footy icon.

Cheers sjabc. Geof seems like such a nice bloke and the way he has stuck by Peter is inspiring.

After a long day at work, heading back to the hotel, I decided that a bit of Mexican was in order from a take away joint in Hindley street. While waiting for food, I noticed up on the wall a Carlton jumper, it was an old one with the Avco badge on it. I has to have a closer look, turns out it was signed by Motts, must remember to get a photo of it before I head home. There was also a signed Sturt jumper right next to it.

Like others have said, Motts could have been anything. Remember seeing him play (1st?) game at Waverly against Hawks, just about took mark of the year in that game! All the way home was talk about how good he was going to be.

I remember hearing about the accident and not believing what had happened.

I recall seeing a picture of the wreck and being amazed that anybody at all could have survived.

It's still very painful thinking about it even 23 years later.

Motley is Courage personified.
