Agree.

OK.....here's the definite answer to the original question.

Chris Grant.....Pick 105 in the 1988 Draft from Daylesford.....and went on to Captain Footscray/Western Bulldogs.

so your saying Hird was prepared to forfeit what i assume was his dream of playing AFL footy if any club but Essendon* picked him? Thats just ridiculous. Is it true? No kid today would do that

I haven't said that at all.....you have.

All I've submitted are the facts....put whatever spin on it you like....but it really did happen 18 years ago.....as recorded by the AFL.

Selection #79 in the 1990 AFL National Draft.....6th round selection......Essendon*.

Arguably the greatest captain of all "Big John Nicholls" - would not have been selected at all - as Carlton at the time were going for his older brother Don - and the recruiters that went up to Maryborough to try and sign Don were told in no uncertain terms that they would have to take John as well - who was referred to as the "fat one" by I think it may have been Bert Deacon.

The way I understand it, Hird (and his family), made it an open secret that he wouldn't play for any club but Essendon*, and if drafted to any other club, wouldn't play.

Draft. Tampering.

...and Andy McKay did exactly the same thing! North Melbourne were very keen on him - told him they were going to recruit him and he sent a letter to them, the Lions (Fitzroy) and the Swans telling them not to select him in the draft. The AFL fined McKay, Robert Pyman and I think Jonathan Ross for this. Of course - the letter was proof and they copped the 15k fine. But it worked. The clubs were put off enough not to select them.

Daniel Kerr did the same but without a letter.

We did the same with James Cook in the same draft as Hird . It was made plain to other clubs that he wasn't interested in any other club but us .
Pity he was a dud . I think he played a few games with Footscray after he left Carlton .

Cook played at both Footscray and Melbourne after we traded him to the Dogs for little Sexton (Ben).

As for our Captains, many of Carlton's recent Captains actually came to us pre or out of the draft:

Sticks, Bradley and Ratten were all pre-draft, in addition to Kouta, leaving McKay (pick 13 in 1992) and Whitnall (father son in 1996) as our drafted Captains. Of course, Judd was pick 3 and if you include stand-in Captains, Simmo at Pick 45 in 2002 is our 'latest pick' for Captain.

Just wondering if Chris Newman is the lowest draft pick to become captain of an AFL club? I think he was drafted at 55 in 2000 but stand to be corrected on that too.

A topic for someone with a bit of time to put some research into.

I think Brett Kirk came off the Rookie list but not to sure of it

Yep, looks like Kirkwas taken at #40 in the Rookie Draft in 1999, after 93 were taken in the ND ................ (and 15 in the PSD)
