Anything less than finals id consider 2009 a disappointment! Enough is enough! Time to smack the following teams for the next few seasons

Collingwood ( because they are scum )
Essendon* ( we owe them, shouldnt have lost to them this season )
StKilda ( how many times have the bashed us in the past few seasons )
Sydney ( Roos needs to be smashed, he has it in for us )
Kangaroos ( Harvey needs to be bashed )

We need to smack Hawthorn ( but it wont happen ). The way that Sewer Rat Bateman celebrated when the siren went on Sat night ( because they stopped Fev kicking his 100th ) made me livid! It was as if they won a close game!

Seeing as we were 2 wins off 4th or 5th position this year (the losses against the Swans and the Crows when we should ve won cost us), I'd expect nothing less then 11-13 wins next year and a taste of finals action..

I feel a little differently..IMO we're not a legitimate contender for a flag until at least 2011 onwards, so my expectations for the seasons until then are all formulated in that context...we might might be in the finals next year and that will be very exciting for us - but I don't care if we don't. I'm all about the bigger picture now. I just want the core group we have to continue to gel and develop as a team and as players. If we have a shocker next year or even the year after, it's all part of that process, and we shouldn't lose our heads.

Geelong were maligned for years for promising everything and delivering nothing and now they look unstoppable. We need to get that even spread of players in the 100-150 games bracket like they, and every other recent premier, have

If we keep the core team together and fit we will challenge seriously 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. That's when I will start worrying about expectations.

+1

I seriously wouldn't mind trading some of our experienced guys, such as Scotland, Thornton, Carazzo and Houlihan (all ONLY if we get a decent deal for them) and some of out fringe players (eg Russel/Bentick) for some picks/young kids, and go back a step next year to allow us to go 3 steps forward in 2010 and 2011. That said, I doubt Pratt would want a lean season next year considering the amount of money he has put into the club (we kinda owe the old guy a Premiership or 2 before he kicks it ......... heh knock wood)

Great post Elroy. Let's hope the club don't think we're closer than we actually are/are impatient and trade first round picks for players like Kerr.

You can never have enough young talent on the list.

With the age of our list, its difficult to imagine too many players dropping off from 2008. Fev, Scotland, Stevens, Carrazzo could, but that would be more than balanced out by the natural improvement of everyone else.

I expect Murphy and Gibbs to head towards elite, Kreuzer and Hampson to have a little more impact at centre bounces, Grigg, Bower, Jamison etc to become contributors every week and of course Judd with a season under his belt and getting back to full fitness to explode.

Where this places us is hard to say as the rest of the competition is improving at the same time, but not make any progress would be disappointing.

It would be optimistic to think we csn challenge the elite teams, but I don't think its unrealistic to expect to see us on the next level.

i wouldn't expect any major improvement. i predict 9th or 10th.

im pretty sure we only beat 2 top eight teams this year

I agree and it will be disappointing if we don't make the finals next year.

The only teams I expect to finish above us would be Geelong and Hawthorn....all the others I think we would at least be on par with at the start of the season.

In hindsight we probably had a reasonable run with injuries this year but Walker was a significant loss and Judd only hit his straps in the 2nd half of the season. Bower, Thornton and Jamison missed for lengthy periods and if Hadley can get back to 100% he would make a big difference IMO.

Instead many politicians both here and also overseas say that they are acting in your best interests - but instead, they are actually betraying your interests.

Its not appropriate to talk about these things at length in a post like this though..

However I do think that widening conflict will be the backdrop for our 17th flag - just as it has been for quite a few of our flags in the past.

So I am sorry to say that it will be a scary time.

In many ways I would like Carltons next flag to not occur during a war - because there will be many people, driven by jealousy and hatreds who will do their best to make our triumph out to be not as good as it will actually be.

But the truth will be that Carltons next flag will indeed be one of the best in our long history. But many people will resent that this is the case.

Get off!

Below is the 2008 ladder at the completion of the 2008 season.

In 2009 I expect the teams in cyan to finish above us, the teams in white to finish below us. The majority of the teams in yellow are the teams I think we'll be fighting with for a spot in the 8. If my predictions are correct, that leaves 5 spots in the 8 up for grabs, so we need to make sure there's at least 4 yellow teams below us if we want to make finals.

Geelong
Hawthorn
Western Bulldogs

St Kilda
Adelaide
Sydney
North Melbourne
Collingwood
Richmond

Brisbane
Carlton
Essendon*
Port Adelaide
Fremantle
West Coast
Melbourne

I like Elroy's theory in terms of not losing our rag if we tread water in terms of wins/losses next year, however, while I can live with that, there'll be plenty here that won't.

Never!

I expect to finish 8th. That is a fair year. My rear is we do not have the key position stocks to improve. Fev is about due for an injury as well.

Well summed up Camelboy however I will be disappointed if we don't finish above both Sydney and Port Adelaide next year. I realise that the Power lost a lot of close matches this year and Chad Cornes was injured however we should still be better than them IMO. The Swans are in decline and it wouldn't surpirise me if they ended up in the bottom 4.

In fact I'm not convinced that the Western Bulldogs will be better than us next year either after watching the Hawks thump them last night.

If the following hasn't changed 12 months from now I'll be ropeable

- Being out of the finals
- Still with losing streaks against the aints, roos, scum and swans
- Only one player kicking over 30 goals for the year
- Still giving up goals in time-on, and lapsing for whole quarters at a time, requiring another massive comeback

This shit must end!
