they are worse then drugs but not worse then cigarettes?

cigarettes and pokies are legal.

Only reason being the government profits greatly from their sales. They would have been ditched many light years ago otherwise.

Can you imagine if the government could somehow tax $5 on every eccy sold? They'd be lining the supermarket shelves with them. Arnotts and Cadbury's would be mass producing them. Cadbury's chocolate eccy's....mmmmm.....I like the sound of that. :o :-D

No one wants to answer my question - as per usual...

Don't take it personally. Most people are probably still shocked that you haven't bothered to look.

Sorry, but I really don't agree with this sentiment.

Pokies are just a machine...yes, we are all aware of the scientific background behind the lights and sounds which increase the entertainment value...but seriously, it's a game and a form of gambling. Nothing more.

If you are losing all your money gambling you have no one to blame but yourself. Its a lame excuse to try and point the finger at anyone else. It's either your greed or your will keeping you there. Blaming someone else is a cop out.

The information is there on every machine about the odds and warnings etc.

You can't continually make the wrong choices and then cry foul when you find yourself in a bad situation.

People need to stop passing the buck and realise they are responsible for their own actions.

Like many I have strong feelings on pokies. I think they are a scurge on our society, because they are set up so that those playing do not win.
Often with terrible personal affect on those that get "hooked" and their families.

How poor that Carlton Football Club is so involved in poker machines and how disgusting that they were seeking a licence to operate these mechanical leeches until 3 am in the morning.

It is good that "some" others feel the same way.

Cheers for now

I think advertising of sports betting is a scurge on our society!
But it pulls in plenty of cash!
Luckily we're involved in that too!

Chaaaaaaaching!

could we perhaps setup some Pit Fighting or a Moonshine business in the old Heatley Stand. Pokies and online betting are a scourge no doubt but there is a fine line between protecting people from themselves and being the 'nanny state'.

Do you mean pit-bull fighting?
You'll have to ask TheBluesMuse.

Not sure we would want to limit ourselves, anything that can crawl into the pit put up a decent showing and return a profit would be fair game!

Quote:
If player wellbeing is at the core of this review, should the AFL impose limits on what players are able to gamble each week? There are many people in the industry, myself included, who view gambling as by far the biggest social issue for AFL players. I do not believe the AFL should have any role in deciding how much players are allowed to gamble. Nor do I think the AFL should ban revenue from gambling companies. William Hill is one of our sponsors at Carlton, and I'm grateful for their support. I don't imagine we have a long waiting list of corporate partners wanting to contribute at the minute!

So why is there this urgency to change the illicit drugs policy? There is an element of truth in all the reasons put forward by the AFL. But the missing reason – which isn't much spoken about – is the commercial cost the AFL pays if there is a perception that it is soft on drugs. Consumer brands don't want to be associated with a competition that is thought to have a drug problem, even if the data doesn't support that argument. To maximise TV rights and the money corporate partners are prepared to tip in, the AFL must be seen to be acting decisively on the issue. Obviously, the illicit drugs "industry" – as opposed to gambling – doesn't contribute any money to the AFL. Further, the effects of problem gambling on players usually are apparent only behind closed doors, which is also why the AFL is not as motivated to act on gambling as it is on illicit drugs.

Getting automatically subscribed to the William Hill TXT list didn't fill me with much joy either.

Nice that Judd shined a mini spotlight on the AFL hypocrisy, but I think he needed to go harder to make a bigger impact.

The biggest scourge on our society is Big Sugar and their peddling of high calorie, low nutrition food to our kids. The child obesity epidemic is upon us and the diabetes that follows.
We need to dump Mars Coke and Gatorade as our sponsors. We should also ban all fried and high calorie food from our home games and finance the shortfall to the venue operators.

Also we should dump Nike as our sportswear sponsor until they improve the working conditions in their factories and pay a fair wage to their workers.

And we should dump all beer sales from our games because alcohol is a leading contributor to domestic and sexual violence.

What else can we get rid of??

Our ineffective board.
Our seemingly hapless coach.
Our spineless players.
Our apathetic supporters.
Or under utliised home ground.

That should just about do it.
