79 81 82 sides never played 4 quarters of football they are the reason there is a premiership quarter. Its possible to play 10 -15 mins of a quarter and win dont think u need to do the whole time and with the quality of the game and the pace its pretty hard for any side to be full on for 100 minutes.

BTW I have not seen a live game for a few years and watched us play the tigers. You lucky people that get to see the boys every week cant even comprehend how fast pace the game has become and the level of intensity.

As well is the tightness of a game it takes small breaks to get the goal on the boards. All the criticism of past players in regard to the softness none of those guys would be able to play now even at their best.

Two more weeks, two more topsy-turvy, non 4-qtr efforts.

it'd be just nice if when we had 'bad' quarters we either broke even or only lost them by a goal or so. not these 6 goal to 2 non competitive displays :x

For me its a question of size and bulk. We have players that have been in the system 1, 2 or 3 years tackling and running their backsides off but simply haven't matured physically enough yet. We then get found out against more mature sides in Sydney & Adelaide. Our combacks against Bulldogs, Port, Richmond were against smaller bodies.

I stood in between players against Sydney and the size difference was immense. Give us another preseason or two and we will match them for 4 qtrs. The great thing is that we keep trying and aren't far away.

Just look at the body size of the Geelong players.

Add Bannister, Hadley, Houlihan and maybe a couple of mature trades and we will look pretty good.

Our issue is the second and third quarters. We tend to release the pressure or drop off our intensity and running to save ourselves for the last quarter. I don't mind doing this but we need to be better at holding the opposition during this time, while still adding some scoreboard pressure ourselves. I think another pre-season will fix this problem as well as a summer of skills work.

We have so many kids about to enter there 3rd-4th pre-season, all of whom should be able to play at the required levels longer.

I actually thought we held Adelaide OK in the 3rd yesterday, but let ourselves down by not scoring much ourselves.

Agree with your point though, and it definitely seemed like the guys were saving themselves for the last qtr, rather than trying to put the match away in the 3rd.

I think their belief in themselves for coming back and over-running teams in the last, could be working against us in that they have an almost belief that we are invincible in how they play leading up to the last qtr.

It's not a bad thing to have, this unwavering confidence, but the let down is enormous.

I'm still ropeable after the loss and seeing the game on Foxtel now has just pissed me off even more.

Can we do it for the next twelve quarters?

Can we have the same result after every fourth quarter for the rest of the year?

Thought this would be a good time to resurrect the ol girl, because in the games following our win over Port we again had inconsistent performances (except for Hawthorn, we just got spanked from minute-1 and the game became a farce). Getting smashed by the Roos after matching it with them early, followed by yet another miraculous escape against the Lions.

What do you think the boys need to do to see to it that we don't suffer from the same problem next year? Is it fitness? Strength? Psychiatry?

..actually, i would think that in the 1st Q vs whorks we actually matched them, aside from fev's nervous kicks at goal..

Why is it that nobody discusses the merits of 1, 2 or 3 quarter football? :?:
