Ratts may be able to reflect somewhat on his own early career, even though his first season was outstanding he dropped off the pace for the next couple.

Like me, he would also remember back to Kouta in 1992, 1993 and most of 1994. Then one day in 1994, like a tap being turned on, Kouta suddenly found a second gear. No doubt prior to that he had been trying his guts out, and I do remember he lacked a lot of confidence early, but once he knew he belonged, the performances started to follow...and that was around the 35 game mark too.

I'm not saying Russell will be as good as Kouta (but wouldn't it be good if he turned out to be :-D ) but the little green line is headed in the right direction.

Hear, hear!

Don't mind the critics, just keep on plugging away and showing signs of improvement. Do that and the consistency they crave will come your way.

Jury still out on JR, one quarter isnt enough to declare him as making it but at least it showed he has the ability, and it was the best I have seen him play all be it for 20 odd minutes.

As Keogh suggested his kicking and decision making need to be tested over time and I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes vs Collingwood who have several players who would be good matchups.

re: Sylvia, had a reasonable game vs Collingwood and kicked a few goals and like JR might be starting to establish himself.

Both players are not the same quality at this stage as Andrew Walker however and need to do a lot more to justify their top ten selections...

He will never be another Kouta but if he can consistently play like he did in the last quarter , he will add an extra dimension to the team. I was concerned that the incident with Paul Stewart may have affected him but it didn't seem to .

Russell's been improving all year. Took the last quarter of Sundays game for some of you to realise that. Not all players can play really good footy in their first few years some take time to develop...and if he was lacking confidence it wasnt his fault that he was kept in the 1's and not dropped to the 2's...but Ratts obviously knew if he showed faith in him the results would come sooner or later.

so stop bagging players out so much like you did with JR

Bloody Hell.......................... I don't want to seem like the "Glass half empty" guy but you have to remember............

HE PLAYED ONE GOOD QTR.

The rest of his game was nothing short of crap.

HE cost us 2 of ports 8 goals. That's 25%! Look at it that way.

He's last qtr was as good as any i have ever seen from him (VFL level included) and looked like (dare i say it) and elite player.

Far to many times this year i've seen him miss absolute sitters, sometimes just 20mtrs from goal on the slightest of angles, when we are in a crucial moment. 4 goals from 40 games says it all.

Don't get me wrong, just cause i'm not a fan doesn't meen i don't want to see him sucseed. Quite the opposite. I'd love to see him establish himself as a regular starting 22............

But let me ask you this.............

If Walker / Houlihan / Hadley were fit................ would you choose JR over them?

If he didn't have that last qtr..................... would you pick him this week?

Again............. GREAT last QTR.............Deserves another selection for this weeks game. But he has to start doing basic football stuff like kick goals & hit targets which he has not done.

You have some good points there however I'm soley pointing out the last qtr and if he can do that consistently over a long period of time then he will a very good player! he also needs to kick goals when he is 30-40 metres out. Maybe he a late maturer and needs a couple years extra to come to grips with AFL.

As far as I'm concerned, he's really only in his first "development" year.

He can actually play pretty good football. Just in a shit team.
I recon Cameron Bruce and Brad Green could have much higher standing in the game then they do now if they played in a good team.

JR virtually won us the game! His contested mark in the middle of the ground after Juddy centred a dangerous ball could easily have been spoiled and possession lost. But JR took a great contested grab and handballed to Stevo ( i think) who hit KREUZE on the chest.

He is a good size, in our best 22...........although those earlier handballs were Acklandish

It was Murphy.

And yeh that was a great strong mark and to give it off straight away was also a good sign. Loved the intercept to set up Betts' goal and just the way he threw himself at the contest was great to see.

Great last quarter you mean

Perspective

He had to do something eventually didnt he

Who was his opponent
where was the ball virtually all of the last quarter
Where did Russell play

Very lucky to be playing at all

Overall a disappointment
Had to produce something

Lets not fall into the trap of pumping up players for 20 minutes of footy which was all our way

flower Hell

I dont want to become a club which has names on lockers that are only there because

the club was shit
the list management were dumb

Houlihan is there already
Good on Russell for finally showing something for a whole quarter 8)

But he still has question marks all over him with his kicking and decision making

Its like the Wiggo argument

You play 90 odd games you are going to some good things

Still reckon Wiggo should be delisted at the end of the year

I dont want to become a Richmond which allow the likes of Tivendale and Bowden collectively play 450 odd games.

Lets she Jordan play consistent footy for the rest of the year and play well when the team is struggling

Bit premature Verbs

Heaven help us if Russell plays as well as Bowden and wins two AA jumpers.

I might not read TC again.....

I watched the replay again today.... The handball that JR flicked to cost a goal particularly struck me - but a couple of things about his contribution:

1) He was stunned for all of a second that it went wrong, then he FLEW after the Port players to try and make amends. If that had come off - we'd be lauding him like Murph with his out of bounds followed up by a great hard ball get.

2) The constant reference to "One good quarter" is particularly harsh IMO. I think JR was one of the few trying to lift the team early in the second half. He and Grigg were trying everything to spark the team...

3) His all around pressure on the Port players can't be underestimated - he had an impact on a LOT of contests.

I'm not a big critic, nor am I a huge fan - but I think his game last week has been unfairly written off.

A post that puts things into persepctive.

Seriously some folk have no idea.... Clangers, Poor decision making , can't kick can't mark too slow , doesn't deserve to be in our best 22. And all this for the same one bloke every week....

Do people here actually watch games sober anymore.... 8)
Each to there own, i guess...
