Make it happen Swanny. DO IT!

There will be footy on Good Friday and if it's 2 other clubs playing I will be furious. It would be negligent of the Carlton footy club to squander this opportunity.

By the way - footy on ANZAC day is WAY more inappropriate than footy on Good Friday. You won't find a country in the world that makes its national remembrance day about a footy game (and carries on about the players having to brave like the diggers - GIMME A BREAK!!). But, most countries have sport on Easter.

DO IT SWANNY!!!!

Thanksgiving, anyone?

Yes, I understand it's not a commemoration of the fallen day, but it's their most solemn national day.

I voted for 'dunno'... my mum is Christian and although I'm not into it like she is, if she asked me not to go, I wouldn't. Based on the fact that I respect the beliefs her beliefs. She never drills it down my throat and tries to push me to believe anything... but I would still respect her wishes, for her not for jesus, or whatever is out there.

In our house we like to celebrate the untimely death of JR on Dallas, which as far as I'm aware, occurred on March 21; so as long as we don't play on that date I'm ok.

Thanksgiving, solemn? I thought it was an old harvest celebration or something. Whatever - not important.

2 teams will one day have the fortune of a blockbuster on Good Friday. One of them better be Carlton.

I must say that a good friday game would be difficult for me attend, as Easter often coincides with Passover, and Friday night is also a family dinner night for many Jews, that is difficult to get out of for footy (though I manage  )

But, this isn't about me, or Christians or Jews or whoever. If 10% can't attend, the other 90% will flock to the G. Each to their own.

Grab the opportunity Swanny.

He made no such sacrifice for me.

Bounce the ball.

personally, i'm all for it. would love to go the footy on good friday.

the biggest concern i think is that all the players need to be on board as well. if a player has a strong christian connection would he be prepared to play on good friday? and if not how would we and the club react if he said no to playing? does he compromise his beliefs or his commitment to the club? do we have the right to make someone have to make that decision?

whilst i don't really care about the fans or wider community as they have a choice about which way they go, a player could potentially be placed in a completely unfair position.

I would hope he'd be handed the 'harden the f%&# up' wrist band and urged to get on with his job.

In all seriousness, though, it's a good question, but one that I very seriously doubt would ever be relevant. Any sort of religious extremism that would prevent a bloke from doing his job (and one that we'd hope he loves to do) is unhealthy and should be questioned, surely?

I'm no hard core religious fanatic but if someone wants to observe their faith on whateva day of the year I dont have a problem with it and would not be forcing them to play...I dont find it unhealthy that someone would want to lead a balanced lifestyle and look at other aspects of their life other than football...

Agreed (there was an element of the devil's advocate in my last post).

However, this same balance should also lend itself to a little common sense; if, as mooted, any Good Friday match would be played at twilight (at the earliest), then surely there's ample time for 'balance' to be respected and observed.

While the hypothetical of a devout Christian lad forgoing his place in the team on religious grounds is an interesting discussion topic, can anyone really, seriously, see this happening? I can only see it being less and less of a potential issue as the years roll by.

I'm Christian and i'd love for the Blues to play on Good Friday! Especially at night so i'd still get the mass and family out the way and head to the hallowed turf of the G to watch Carlton

I think you would find the really devout wouldnt play at anytime on Good Friday....I should be honest and say that my family and I trek over to Adelaide every easter and watch my son play basketball in the Norwood tournament ....and yes they play games on Good Friday and Easter Sunday....
My wife is a religious person and attends church but believes family is what christianity is all about and accepts her basketball crazy husband and son dragging her and our daughter along for support.....in return we get dragged along to church on the odd occassion.

Twighlight footy with some proceeds going to the Good Friday appeal would be ok with most I would imagine... other than the devout...
