Not fair at all.
He is clearly snowed under and not getting the support he needs.
He wasn't the only one out there on Saturday to play like shit.

i dont think he is referring to that, but more the fact that Voss and Riccuto have a "presence" on the field.

Stevens is a gun - no doubt in that one second, but he doesnt have that "presence"

IMO Thorton does.

Echos of 2002....

Thornton exhibits everything one looks for in a young captain. Also, he doesn't drink. That shows a lot about his commitment.

The Prez got it...Voss and Riccuito have presence and command authority.....Nick is a terrific player bit like Craig Bradley...all class but doesnt have the edge you need to have the troops follow him into battle and lead the charge....Thorntons got it...stood up to Glen Jakovich in his first game and we all knew he would make it from day 1....

Its not being physically tough either its attitude and persona......Andy Mckay was hard and tough but didnt have that quality to lead like Sticks did.....Kouta doesnt have it either...the good captains lead from the front.
Luke Hodge has it to....ditto for J Brown.....ditto for Tredrae...Port gave the captains job to Primus but Tredrae is the man......its a quality that only certain players have......

re Chris Judd....great player but not captain material IMHO.....

Agree with Elwood here, it's a case of charisma and the carrying of oneself. Like political leaders, Clinton had it, Bush doesn't.

Thornton is the only one in our side who does IMO.

Big Plus for thornoton is that he is a True Blue player come off rookie list to playing list so not a ring in ect .... not that Stevo wouldnt make a good leader but Thornton would be good and its good to have one from inside the club too

As requested by The Prez a poll has been added, thanks for the support of the thread as I really believe this is one of the important issues at our club.

I have voted for Bret (obviously) and would have Stevens and Waite as the back up

Well I voted for Stevo & would have t-bird & waite as back up as I've said before. It's an interesting topic though & looks like we do have something to look forward to in the future.

Definitely Stevens for Captain next year, and Bret Thornton as VC.

Deputy's to include French, Lappin, Kouta, *Whitnall, *Campo (Emergencies in the absence of Whit's & Campo - Walker, Teague)

* Subject to not being traded

Stevens is a "Paul Medhurst" earning $500,000. Too greedy to be CLUB CAPTAIN.

Kouta = wonderful player but in honesty hasn't delivered as captain.

Bret, as I said, would be perfect in 2 years, and if you imagine if Sticks and Peter Dean had played in different areas Dean would have been a great skipper, in much the same mould that I reckon T-Bird would be.

However, he is not ready for such a great burden yet, in terms of his footy development, IMO.

Someone needs to carry the can for a few years until he's ready. Maybe Matty Lappin?

Come on guys we are changing our captain as much as St. Kilda. The only difference is that they have a policy of doing it.

Kouta has arguably been our best player over the last 10 years and for this matter he gains respect by his teammates and respect by the public. He is our most marketable player still and that is important in gaining memberships.

Kouta may not have many years left, but I feel that while he is still one of our best players then he should still be captain.

As bad as the loss was on the weekend I don't believe that we need to run a raffle to find a replacement. That means that we should not be considering changing captains until late next year. By then we will know who of Stevens, Thornton, Lappin, French, Teague, Campo or Whitnall will stand up as a viable alternative. Right now I don't think that any of them are good enough.

Personally, I believe that Jared Waite is the man for the future. He has talent, he can win a game by his own brilliance and he will bleed for the Navy Blue jumper. He is the one.

I think it might be a little too soon to be appointing Thornton as captain. Give the kid a chance to learn the game and hold down CHB. Kouta will still be playing next year, I'd leave him as captain, make Stevens, Thornton and one other candidate (Teague, French, Fevola) vice-captains and let them handle that first.

Might be surprised to see Fevola there, but he's the face of our club and becoming a part of the leadership group again should only enhance his standing and bring some responsibility upon his shoulders.

I was all for either Whitnall or Stevens going forward, but have now totally changed my mind and regonise that T-Bird is in fact the perfect person to lead our players for the next decade.

Waite another year before deciding!

You never know who might prove to be our most valuable player in 2006 and onwards.

Waite seems to have that leadership charisma based on what we have seen so far, not so sure about Bret. But irrespective, it is not their time yet.

Kouta to keep the job, then I would like Waitey to be the man.

Thornton for our next captain. Not next year though with Kouta still around. Thornton hates the opposition. From training posts he is always doing extra, helping Setanta and Aisake etc. He presented himself well on Saturday Central after the Hawthorn win. We have had captain changes due to retirements and to my mind, Thornton gives us stability at the top for years to come. I reckon some people are hard on Stevo re presence. I agree with PJ in that he has been doing the work of more than one player this year. And as far as the $500K per year jibe, we have to fill the salary cap to a certain level and there are going to be players on that amount through out the league. Years ago the Dockers would have had Clive Waterhouse on the same money as Brett Ratten cos of the rules. Stevo with the work he is does on the field to me, deserves all of the money that he is getting. Waite, to me does not come across as a leader. An excitement machine when he plays from the front ( notice how he always gets to a tackle about half a second too late. Get there son! ). Thornton for mine.

I think you might find that it's one of those "unwritten" parts to Nick Stevens contract that a culmination of good form, input into the leadership group and availibility of the captaincy in 2007, that he will be made captain. Kouta will be playing in 2006 and will still deservedly be captain.
