The Moran boys had strong links with the Carlton Football Club through their grandfather, Leo Brooks. Leo served for 30 years as Carlton's head doorman, player confidante, part-time recruiter and odd-jobs man.
Leo was a father figure to interstate and country recruits such as Peter Bosustow, Brent Crosswell and Mike Fitzpatrick. He was given life membership at Carlton and played an integral part in Fitzpatrick's recruitment.
Through Leo, Mark and Jason Moran came to know a number of Carlton players. After Mark's death in June 2000 a Carlton player left a death notice in the Herald Sun which referred to his cherished memories of the victory lap they shared after the 1982 Grand Final.
Mark's wake was held at the club's Princes Park rooms.
The club generously agreed to a family request to lend the 1982 flag to drape over Mark's coffin but when Col Kinnear later asked the family to return the flag, he was firmly turned down...turns out that Col didn't ask the 'right' family members - another phone call was put through to the right person and the flag was returned without fuss and with so little fanfare that the club heirarchy didn't even realise it had been returned.
I think a little bit of drama was bought into the story..as with a few of these notorious men - the truth sounds a bit boring so the story is embellished somewhat.
Mark is at the far right of this photo taken after Carlton's 1981 premiership victory with Ken Hunter, Rod Ashman, Mike Fitzpatrick, and David Parkin.
