Take your pick.

I reckon you're pretty close there PJ if its based on talent. Kangaroos is based on spirit, I reckon ours should be based on talent, and contribution to the club over a long period of time.

John Nicholls was a premiership captain and coach through one of our more successful periods, made the AFL TOTC and would probably get my vote.

John Nicholls. In my 50 odd years of barracking & watching Carlton, Big John was easily the best.

Thread over.
Yep: what was it? Broken rib or punctured lung? And he wouldn't go off because he'd be letting the side down? They certainly don't make players like that any more

Read the 1945 finals series in the Blueseum and you'll understand why Deano has a permanent hard-on for the hardman.

In that vein I nominate Jim Park - great fullback whose career was cut short when he was killed in action.

Under the criteria in the initial post, I agree with Brad - Johnston is all over it. I like the nominations of Peter Dean and Bruce Doull as well.

Or Alby Ingleman. He has a cool name.

I agree with the Big Nick nomination, although the Dominator would come a close second for mine.
Nick was a matchwinner for us in finals and then a matchwinning coach for us in finals. Plus he was hard and a protector. Just ask Tuddy or Refer to Len Thomson's story on being knocked out (albeit accidentally).
After almost 50 years of being a Carlton supporter, I also can't think of a more dominant and matchwinning player than Big John. He tops my best ever everything for Carlton.
I was at an Essendon* game a few years ago in a corpoate area and Big John came into the room and everything sort of went a bit quieter and gravitated to his persona. He walked past me and I touched his coat. I was with Blue Beatle and I whispered, "I just touched Big John's coat." It must have been a bit louder than I though because Big John heard it and turned around and gave me a bit of a smile. I felt sooo embarrassed. I was about fifty at the time

BS - would more likely have been a grimace then a smile if you know the person.

The club chose "Big Nick" to walk off the ground with the ball in that final game at Princes Park - and I think that says it all.

Well couldn't you just go back and ask him if he can make you a bit lame in the left leg during the middle of the week. :P

bluebagger of the past 2 centuries would be Big Nick, Doull, Sticks, Dominator, or Ryan Houlihan

after reading his biography last year, it's big nick for me. i've read wayne johnston's one as well and it's not hard to understand why people would nominate him.

Tommi must be BlueBagger of the Century, he is the Poster of the Millenium after all.

Oh, and for mine, Geoff Southby. He was my favourite player when I was growing up. Solid, dependable, just went about doing his buiness quietly.

I don't think this description fits into what I see as being the attributes as the bluebagger of the century - perhaps at lowly north who value these qualities but I think we always look at big game matchwinners who stamp their authority on the games that count.

Pretty solid effort Tommi

Whilst he is a mate i have to say he was a better player than his number of games would show.

A bit stiff during
his time at Carlton to be up against so many good rovers.

As to the name, clearly not of Greek stock although he is now married to one. :-D

While the Dominator did just that in almost any finals game he played, and Bruce was just sublime, and Jezza was the best magician footy has ever seen, the BlueBagger medal sits well & truly around Big Nick's neck.

For 20 years he stood like a Colossus over PP, he was a magnificent combination of skill, power & hardness.

Everyone in Navy Blue felt safe when Big Nick was on the field with them, and the opposition knew that along with his elephantine thighs he had an elephantine memory for any indiscretion that may have occurred.

Even the media was scared when he focussed his steely blue eyes on them

Club's like the Kangas can nominate one player because there are so few to pick from.

Have a read through the list of players that make up the CFC Team of the Century and you can give up trying to isolate one. If any one of most of those blokes played for North Melbourne Archer would have run second.

To isolate one player when you have such a rich history would almost be a slight on the others.

Ted Whitten, Jack Dyer, Glenn Archer, Bob Skilton, Haydn Bunton, Nathan Buckley, Ron Barassi...

Let the clubs with "a" champion isolate their greatest and be grateful we have the most extraordinary list of champions any club has ever seen.

well said GWS, my initial thread was prompted by the fact that I am sick of the media pumping up Archers tyres with all of this 'shinboner of the century' crap. Similar to the Anzac Day medalist being an honour when only two clubs have played for it and also people talking about the Copeland Trophy as being prestigious...........load of shit in other words.

And the fact we have 5 players in the AFL's Team of the Century (6 if you include Barassi) to "The Filths" zero.

That alone warms the cockles.
