My thoughts exactly. Every Tom Dick and Harry wants to 2nd guess the guy, like he's senile. He's forgotten more about how to close a deal than any of us will ever learn

Holy shit $3mill?????????

Did I read that right? My eyes nearly popped out of my eye sockets after opening this thread. I would've been happy with half a mill!

To put it into perspective, last year West Coast made a profit of $4.2 mill IIRC in their premiership year which is the largest profit ever annouced by a club.

Absolutely staggering. I'm rapt! :-D

I wish the debt was reduced by more but this is fantastic though, dont get me wrong.

If we made a $3million profit and owed 8 last year then it's down to 5 million now. A 37.5% reduction, which I lazily referred to as almost half.

Not necessarily true.

WOW thats surprising! Great stuff!

Can anybody break it down further as to how we managed to overturn such a deficit?

Pratts plan is to ensure we're self sufficient and able to stand on our own before he leaves.

good call...Pratt came to the club and stated 'i could very easily open my bank account and clear the debts, but i want to put in a board who can prove themselves as competent enough to be able to generate large profits year in, year out. Simply bailing the club out of its debts is a short term bandaid fix, and we need business strategies in place so that we do not fall back into debt.'

or something along those lines....

I do, however, believe that when Mr. Pratt leaves the club and ends his tenure as President that he'll dive into the back pocket and pull out a lazy 5mil or so as a departing present...I legitemately feel that whether its the end of '08 or '09 or even later (doubt it though) that he should be given the respect, and thanks he deserves for steering the resurgance that we're seeing take place. Sticks Kernahan may be maligned on this board, but he put the club in perspective perfectly when he said 'we are carlton, flower the rest' and that comment has stuck hard in my mind ever since. We ARE Carlton, flower the rest...say it a few times and you'll realise just how true it is. We've had some tough times but we're now in the back half of the steeplechase and we're headed for the home stretch. Remember, for every action, there is an equal or greater opposite reaction. We've had 5 SHOCKING years which have hurt us all...but there's not long left until that is VERY different

Go Blues.

This time last year I held massive fears for the future of our club...

The Board has done a wonderful job. Just a wonderful job. Congratulations to all of them. And I think as BV said... congratulations to all of us too. Not only did we have a significant say in the Board structure at the last election, but we also bought memberships in record amounts (and probably a fair few of us on this site contributed in other ways too through merchandise sales, or raffle purchases, etc).

Just a brilliant result all round...

Can someone explain the bit about the AFL handout?????

I thought the only HANDOUT we got from the AFL was the $1.5m Smorgon begged for, which was to be paid back this year, but the HS mentioned a $2.2m handout.

Handout or not, still a great turnaround and gets the place positive again.

Juddy, think again if you don't think we're going places. Timing of this announcement brilliant and can't help but think that Dick had this in mind when he did the CFC media spruik y'day.

Be aware AFL, we've found our Mojo.

That's what I want to know. The $1.5m was interest free so it isn't that and it was paid last year and included in last year's figures.

This $2.2m is another figure. Is this the money for the upgrade of Princes Park because the umpires are based there and TAC and VFL use the ground as well?

If that's the case, it is hardly a handout.

Anyone has the real story on this?

Congrads to the Board. They have been magnificent as have all of us supporters who have dipped into their wallets once or twice. Is not the money from the AFL a contribution to the running costs of Princes Park?

Very true. More than money we needed good administration, and a football department that will be the envy of everyone else in the comp. If Dick were to just open his wallet and hand us the dough, that would be validating our mediocrity over these past few years. We wouldn't learn anything and would more than likely @#$%&! up again, expecting our white knight Dick to bail us out once more. What he's done is much better long-term, by brining people to the club who could not only provide the financial nous to get $$$'s to the club, but who understand football in the 21st Century both in football terms and business terms.

I think Pratt will remind us all of the bad times, and that we should not ever become so complacent again. If we do, he'll bugger off, and he would be right to do so. But as long as we stick to our goal, Dick will always be a part of this club and will always help us out during bad times. I hope that whoever succeeds him next year is cut from the same cloth, and that we can continue what Dick started.

It's a classic 'leaving the nest' thing. Dick has shown us the way to get this football club back to the top where it belongs, but it's up to us to realise that dream.

Its good news. From where we were to post the biggest profit any Vic club has ever posted is a great effort by all.

Now all we need is Judd and my year is complete
