He's gone for sure Deano - after Ratten was quoted as saying that TL's timing when putting his hand up to be the coach of Carlton "wasn't ideal" - that's good enough for me! GONE!!

IMO we need a mixture of younger and older coaches and carlton and non carlton people as our assistants for 2008 and beyond.

whoever they are we must make sure ratten is happy with their appointment and we do not force any assistants on him.
we also need to make sure ratten does not just select is buddies and we actually go out and get the best men for the job.

Dean would be fantastic - one of my favourite players from the 90s
Agree with both.If Ricciuto has any coaching ambitions this could be a great opportunity.
Another possibility could be Adrian Hickmont who i have read is doing well with Gippsland under 18`s.

I'd like to see Crossica and Braddles survive. Not unhappy with Daniher and Dempsey either, although my opinion on Daniher may have been formed last year when I thought he was a good mentoring influence on Fev.

I'd like to see a more experienced assistant, like Bond, appointed and someone fresh out of the game. We really need someone to work extremely closely with our young leadership group and fill the void left by not having any leaders amongst our senior group.

In addition to a couple of development coaches we'll be getting the right kind of support around our young players.

What's Marcus Ashcroft doing these days?

Interesting to hear on the News this morning that Carlton had tried to get Connolly as Football Manager or whatever, before he accepted the gig at Melbourne.

Remember that most of us aren't as clued in on the character of coaching prospects as those in the industry.

The following are examples from Andrew Rule's article - http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/footys-finest--young-rich-and-out-of-it/2007/03/10/1173478727321.html?page=fullpage:
Quote:
Angwin's point is backed by a former AFL coach of impeccable character and high standing. He tells the story of a Crows star (with reputed shady connections) taking a fishing tackle box on a team trip. Inside were not hooks and sinkers, just dozens of brightly coloured pills. Drugs.

Quote:
One of the Blues' great finals players reputedly played under the influence of drugs — "his eyes would be rolling around like mad", recalls a contemporary — and later became a dealer among younger players. He saw a Carlton player at a nightclub during the finals in the late 1990s and, while commiserating with him for being dropped from the side, slipped the embarrassed player some drugs. He is still reputed to deal to players and is not the only one.

Since when has that sort of bad timing ever ruled out an assistant coach at Carlton?

I am glad Yogie Bear (Connely) chose Melbourne. Did not want him anyway.

Italian Team Of The Century captain, too!

Not a bad option.
Better than Leppitsch, whom I have never liked. Good player but too much disrespect for the umps on the field for mine and IMVHO was lucky on several occasions not to have been reported for it. We don't need a coach who thinks his charges can backchat umpys. Look what happened to Fev. Hasn't had a free kick since.
Much and all as I hated the way Riccuito carved us up a few times, I think he has the right mix of aggression and skill that the kids would respect. I think Leppitsch has too much of one and not enough of the other.

Anyone know who the Crows star with the tacklebox of drugs is, by the way?

From a HUN article about Lance:

Quote:
THE BLUES are evaluating their assistant coaching panel.

Gavin Crosisca remains contracted, Terry Daniher is part-time, while Tony Liberatore's contract expires shortly and is not expected to be renewed.

By Libba, don't let the door hit your short arse on the way out!

YUP.............piss off Libba!

Never liked you as a player................and to be honest, i have no clue what you've brought to this club as a coach? :? Seriously.

I've been to quite a few training sessions in the last couple of years and the one consistant thing i see WITHOUT FAIL is the sight of Libba standing in the middle of the oval, hands behind his back, doing nothing - NOTHING. Hence, i nicknamed him the Garden Knome.......cause he's pretty much just a stationary midget in the blades of grass of PP.

I DUNNO..............he might be doing wonders behind closed doors, but i don't see it.

I see Ratts, Gavin, Terry and Gary all talking the boys up, yelling encouragement, giving advice..............etc etc etc..........but with Pagan and Libba i saw nothing....................

I'd like to see Crosisca retained. I had the chance to talk footy with him a few months back and he really impressed me.

As for new assistants, I'd sound out Michael Broadbridge. Freo may shake things up a bit and Harvey or whoever gets the gig may want new people.
Broadbridge is top shelf as far as assistants go. He is meticulous in his planning and he has the ability to think outside the square. His computer skills/analysis are sensational and from memory, he coached WA juniors to the national championships a few years back. He then spent a couple of years at Collingwood and they were very unhappy to lose him.

Next option, I'd get Mark Neeld in for a chat. He coaches the Western Jets and most people within the TAC cup rate him very highly.

I'd also have a chat to Jarrad Molloy. He's an assistant at Oakleigh and my mail suggests he interviewed brilliantly last year for the Eastern Ranges job. The word is he withdrew before the decision was made but the job would have been his.
I've also heard reports that he had the propensity to go off his head a bit but I dont know how accurate they are.

Rohan Welsh would also be an option. Ex Carlton boy and coached the Chargers to a flag last year.

Lastly, I'd talk seriously to Mark Riley. He has another year at Melbourne but I suspect he'll be looking for a change.
He was Melbournes defensive coach this year. (Melbourne have an unusual system where they have defensive/offensive coaches who each deal with all the lines instead of having a backline, mid and forward coach)

Anyone who has had the chance to listen to Rileys ideas would surely be impressed. He coached Claremont successfully in the WAFL from memory and his communication skills are excellent.

Just some thoughts.

there is a rich vein of talent on offer
- Roo
- Bucks
are the obvious ones
- not clear what Voss will do now
and a new one is
- Richie Van den berg ... players who have to work hard to be good players often make some of the better coaches and from all accounts at the Hawks he has outstanding leadership skills

I also think we should look to towards clubs that have a model we want to follow - Syd, West Coast, Collingwood, Port Adelaide are clubs that have developed ourtstanding younger players and we should be looking to see which assistants at those clubs would compliment the new coaching panel

Something, that if true, has been kept pretty quiet around these parts is Carlton's interest in recruiting Nathan Buckley as an assistant coach in 2008, as revealed by Gerard Healy on last night's episode of On the couch. Eddie was the guest and he was visibly taken aback when Healy made the comment. You could almost see his sphincter tighten up. McGuire then went on a bit of a rant and rave about not wanting Buckley to learn bad habits at any other clubs and he would be advising Buckley to attend coaching courses overseas, or going to Beijing as part of our Olympic coaching team...
