The part I don't understand is why the AFL have to agree to it. Our loan from the AFL would be separate to what we owed NAB.

The reason is that the AFL underwrites our debt to the bank so they have to agree to any change.

I got the impression llast night that the AFL helped by underwriting the loan or something similar. Now that doesnt make sense. I would be surprised if the AF banked with Westpac given that NAB is a majr corportate partner. Guess we'll have to wait and see what the details are. Surprised none of the dailies have ran with it.

I wouldn't.

MLC investments, which is owned by the NAB has all its banking done by Westpac... thats staff salaries, payments to advisors etc.

One other thing that was mentioned was the AFL weren't prepared to do their part under the old administration due to a lack of faith. That indicates they probably did write off part of their interest free loan.

Not sure how this will work. To save $1 million on an $8 million debt we'd have to be just about getting the money interest free.

Either Dick has used his influence, or Westpac must be coming on board as a sponsor. Either way, great work!

This article seems to contradict this post? Are they not transferring to Westpac?

CARLTON will save about $250,000 on interest repayments in the next year after the AFL helped the Blues negotiate a new interest rate on their multi-million dollar debt.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the improved deal would provide a significant improvement to the club's balance sheet.

"I would also like to acknowledge the Business Banking team at NAB who facilitated the completion of these new arrangements and will continue to provide banking services for Carlton," Carlton president Richard Pratt said yesterday.

"This change produces a substantial reduction in the yearly cost of interest payments to service our debt and will contribute to our efforts to return the club to profitability."

I wouldn't say it contradicts it at all. The million dollars I am sure was not in 1 year but over the life of the loan, so it could well be $250,000 this year. Pratt doesn't say this loan will remain with NAB, just states they "will continue to provide banking services for Carlton". Perhaps they will still provide a savings account we can use to stash some of our weekly allowance away so we can buy Judd. In fact, Pratt's statement sounds like one made when business is taken elsewhere but everyone remains friends.

At about $8m debt, a $250,000 reduction equates to about a 3% reduction per annum. From memory our $8m includes the AFL's $1m, so adjusting for that its about a 3.5% reduction.

This looks like a massive reduction, but often in banking facilities there is a default rate charged or a 'failure to achieve minimum hurdles' rate increase which its likely to have incurred. perhaps the restructure removes this default rate and the Bank, whichever it is, has approved a term-out or extension of the loan.

I still think there's something else to this announcement to come.

But it's all good. The previous admin's stated break-even will be achieved for members, but on top of that we have an interest cost reduction, greater donations and the NAB prize money. Of course they're going to spend a lot of that but the numbers look better already. A nice win over St Kilda may spur a few more members....*
