I don't know why he never played AFL, work/family reasons I guess. He was one of the best WA/SA players from that era never to play VFL. Stephen Michael was probably the only one that I could think of that was better. (Dual Sandover Medallist, Simpson Medallist, etc).
Gibbs snr's ability to read the play was A1.

mate, Ross was my favourite player when i was a young-un and he could do the freakish ... but he wasn't in Michael's league. He used to ruck rove and play on a wing for West Perth ... when he went to Glenelg, i'm pretty sure they turned him into a back pocket.

I've got some great old WAFL stuff signed by Ross that i can't wait to get Bryce's signature on ...

I know he wasn't in Michael's league, that's why I said Michael was better.
I can't think of anyone who would be ahead of Gibbs for 2nd though.
I think you are pretty well on the mark re positions, but I think he did play back for West Perth a bit as well as on the ball.

if you look at the sandover medalists around that time you'd have to say that Phil Narkle, Bryan Cousins, Peter Spencer and Mark Bairstow were all more highly regarded.

even at west perth at the time, Duckworth, Bewick, Menaglio, Fong, Alderton would have all been rated higher than Gibbs for starters ... don't get me wrong - he was head and shoulders my favorite, but i'm not sure he was rated THAT highly by others...

You've taken the comparison off to a different direction. Now we are comparing apples to bananas!
Phil Narkle - St Kilda/West Coast Eagles
Bryan Cousins - Geelong
Peter Spencer - North Melbourne (Dual Sandover Medals Pre WCE)
Mark Bairstow - Geelong

Yes, all were more highly regarded, but the comparison was Gibbs and Michael - two players that were regarded as very high quality players but neither played VFL/AFL.

Duckworth - ditto
Bewick - AFL
Menaglio - good but no legend
Fong - quality, don't know if he would have been a stand out at VFL level.
Alderton - not worth a mention in the same conversation as any of the above players.

But anyway, this is Carlton not West Perth!
Gibbs & Michael both coulda, shoulda, woulda played VFL very successfully. 8)

Neil Craig even?

There were good players from both states, so lets just say that Ross was a flowering good player because mugs don't reach 350 games! 8)

There's only one non VFL/AFL player listed as a Legend in the AFL Hall of Fame though. ;)

Yeah, I saw him in action a few times back in the days when State of Origin was taken seriously.
Pretty handy player I guess.

In the year soon to come - of Carltons surprise footballing triumph, Bryce Gibbs has a stellar season.

Bryce after that year is a football superstar in the mould of Greg Williams - but different and maybe better.

The new young coach at that time chooses to play Bryce in the centre.

Isn't it a GOOD thing that Bryce has had a pretty quiet introduction to AFL footy, with limited gametime and disposals, yet we've still beaten hawthorn and Essendon* in the NAB?

Nice to think how much our midfield will improve with a more mature gibbs in the middle.
