My mate couldn't watch and had moved a few steps down at the back of the stand so that he couldn't see. He just kept watching my face as I was turning between him and the kick. He knew the result was all bad by the look I gave him but still managed to yell at me "NO, DON'T DO IT!!!"

Too late. My beloved Nikon binoculars purchased on a trip to Singapore lay in pieces in the bottom of the carry bag I had just smashed into the brick wall behind the seating. It was a beyond salvage mess - but nowhere near as dramatically mutilated as my thermos.

Classic, I was with your mate half way down the stairs, I couldn't watch it, I actually felt physically sick - you just knew we were going to lose after the siren AGAIN!

I also was at the Hawthorn game when Dixon kicked the goal after the siren, from memory Peter Schwab was out of the game with a heart complaint and Chris Connolly was coaching the Hawks, from memory he coached Fremantle the next year?

Getting back to the game, my brother had a skinful of piss, was laying it thick onto Jonathan Hay calling him every name under the sun, the old Hawthorn bloke in front of us chatted back at him a few times.

At the end of the game, my brother cracked it... at first he was silent then continued laying into Jonathan Hay, then preceeded to take the old cap (Dr. Harry Cooper style) off the old blokes head and threw it a good 10-20 metres then walked away.

Luckily we haven't lost another game after the siren since then...

PS. Driving out of the MCG Car Park my brother was still fuming, was not happy with the delay in the car park so I told him if he didn't like it... catch the train home - and he did!

Great stuff buzzalenko. That would make a great idea for a Buzz article on carltonfc.com.au:

'Great Footy Quotes'

'Geez I'm going to hate lining up for the Grand Final tickets this week'

* 'I'd just like to thank the Carlton Football Club for coming up with a great story'
Aaron Hamill, 1999 Prelim, excusing his knee to the head of Bomber Dean Wallis

That is a great idea Buzz.

I had a similar experience at the 99 Prelim. At 3/4 time I heard the Bummer fans sitting behind me start organising how and where they were going to line up for GF tickets. I bit my tongue until the end of the game.

A funnier experience was to follow the next day when I lined up for GF tickets. The two people at the front of the queue were Bummer supporters who had camped out overnight. All the Carlton supporters gave them so much stick ("Didn't you hear the result" etc), and their retort was that they wanted to watch the Essendon* reserves grand final. Pfft. Losers!

Thylacine although that's a very tragic story you told it bloody well.

I loved this bit:

I was at that game with my mate mattress. We actually worked with Dixon's brother at the time so it was bloody hard to take!!!

As I recall - it was Jordan Doering who kicked the ball to Dixon during this game.

I will never forget Doering's reaction as his shoulders dropped, it was the same shoulder drop that the truck driver did when he got out of his semi trailer after smashing the Kombi Van in that TAC Commercial.

I believe I broke another seat at the MCG that day.

I think we had a run of "after the siren losses" for 3 straight years:

- Port Adelaide - 2001
- Hawthorn - 2002
- ????????? - 2003 (does anyone remember this one???

The Port one was in 2000

I remember Orally palming the ball straight to a Port player who passed it to Burgouyne.

Those were 2 of the worst footballing weeks I can remember. The Geelong game with the Riccardi goal was made even worse because we came from a fair way back at 3/4 time to hit the lead (on the Matthew Lappin goal post 50m penalty) only to have it snatched away.

Then the following week we get dudded by the Eagles by a point at OO after a dubious throw decision allowing a point to be kicked in the closing stages.

Confession - I think I might have shed a tear after that Geelong game, then just decided to get really angry. Another confession - think I got so fired up about footy being back on the weekend that I told Kepler Bradley he should become a pole vaulter because he had absolutely no footballing ability.

confession - my mother loved Michael Sexton (as a footballer) to the point that it repulsed me and made me lash out at him and continually trash him (I was still a teenager). This behaviour was later curbed when out of the blue when my mother was in hospital during the off-season that when Michael was working at the hospital or visiting somebody else one of the nurses told him that he had a huge fan in extensive care and he paid her an extended visit.

Great guy is Michael Sexton. :-D

How well did Skinny milk the 50m penalty in the Geelong game? He went down like he'd been shot from the grassy knoll, and then did the extended roll just to make sure of it

I was up the other end of the ground in the 1993 GF and it was touched

I was also parallel with Riccardi and it was touched, even my Geelong mate next to me said it was touched.

I also confess that i smoke to much at present :(

99 Prelim walking into the ground as an 8 year old with my dad i was asked by a bummers supporter why i bothered coming. I have no idea why you would say that to an eight year old but how i wanted to see that man after the match! (unfortunatly he was long gone as it took us quite a long time to get back to the car!)

I told my Mother-in-Law to %$#@ off, with tears in my eyes, after she enquired about my teams fortunes after the Melbourne game at OO in 2003 a couple of days after Vinnie Waite died.

That was such a crushing loss that one. I remember when Jarrad kicked that brilliant goal on the run in the third quarter at the Heatley Stand end. The Social Club roof nearly lifted right off. Now, I'd heard many a roar from there in my time, but this was something else. I remember thinking at that moment that there was no way we could lose that game.... that made the loss even more gut wrenching.

I'll even go out on a limb and say that THAT loss hurt me more than any other, ever. I cried like a child.

I was, and still am, shattered.

We should have won. The football gods got that one way wrong.

Only seeing Jarrad looking up at the heavens with a premiership medallion around his neck will compensate. And even then....

Me too - I just bloody KNEW we were going to win after that - and I remember thinking, 'this one's for you , Vinnie'.
There have been few darker days than that one.

I cant help but feel a LITTLE responsible for this one fellas....

Was sitting in the legends stand, with all dirty semen supporters around me all day.... I remember after Neitz missed a sitter from 20 out, i just started serving it up to em about how crap their captain/team was...

Then i remember SOV (i think) missing an open goal in the last, and then we lost....

oh yeh, learnt my lesson for real that day......
and the closest ill ever come to a bummer fan i reckon :?

Think it was '94 (but not the Mcguane game) and at 1/2 time when we were down by about 5 goals I threw a bit of a tantrum and had a good cry. Funny thing is that we ended up coming back and winning the game, my favourite all time player Mil Hanna 'The Cranium' kicked a 60m torp goal in the last that sealed the game. Just goes to show that no matter how crap things get, there's always light at the end of the tunnel :-D
