I don't think we can this year, however next year we should be a good chance.

In 2006 approximately 37% of goals in the AFL were a direct result of winning a stoppage.

In 03,04,05 our players will constantly urged by the coach to get the ball and kick it long to a contest and get numbers to the ball.
In 2006 approximately 38% of goals were a direct result of teams having control of the ball and turning it over to the opposition.

In a nutshell, thats about 75% of goals in the AFL.
Our players are miles behind their opponents in absorbing the theory associated with becoming a top AFL player.
If the teacher doesnt understand, how can the pupil?

How long it takes to play finals is largely irrelevant to me. It will take 5 years minimum IMO to compete with the topliners and thats only if we have a huge powershift in the coaches box.

Do you know how we compare to the league average in both these areas?

Goals from stoppages, almost 2 goals per game below the competition average and more than 5 goals per game less than the topliners.

2007 - dont think we will make it this year, too much development still to happen, too many kids not fully comfortable with pressure of elite football

2008 - a possiblility but we will need things to go our way, little injuries etc.. (i predict we will just miss out)

2009 - definately make the finals, get a taste

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 - a Real Show to win the thing

then the cycle will have to restart again.

Do our players and coach believe we can play finals in 2007 and is that going to be their no.1 priority?

We should improve but with Pagan at the helm threepeat isn't out of the equation.

The new assistant coaches will help a lot.

Believer or delusionist?

I will bet anyone, right here right now that Carlton will NOT finish above Collingwood in the season proper ladder at end 2007.

The guys on the field haven't reached the majority of 50 -70 games or more to make the 8 yet, maybe a year or possibly 2.

The guys like Murphy,Bower,Kennedy,Blackwell,Russell and others have under a year of AFL experience.

Ackland is a poor man's French IMO, and Hampson will need 2-3 years. Can't expect anything more than maybe a couple of games of the bench at the end of the year for Aisake.

Come 2009/10 we'll be looking the goods.

C'mon - give the guy some credit *Ackland that is* - the bloke hasn't even played a game in the navy blue yet!! :?

Pagan - not much difference in the team if he was there or otherwise... I say give him this year to show improvement.

That said - I believe he will finish between 7th-10th... at long as we get that winning mentality.

Dont really see a St. Kilda reject doing the job for us. He wasnt great at the Saints, so what has changed for him to be a decent AFL footballer now?

Sorry, and don't take me as an Ackland band-wagon person *as I'm defending him now in 2 posts in a row* - but he wasn't a reject... he decided to leave St. Kilda to join us in the first place... he would have probably been St. Kilda's first string ruckman in 07 once Gardiner has another drunk-driving episode - he Ackland stayed at the Saints.

I'm not saying he will be teriffic - I'm not even saying he will be servicable, I'm just saying give the guy a chance at the club before writing him off...

Everybody loves Bananaby French *particularly after he left the club... hmm* - but I remember an AWFUL LOT of people on here and elsewhere that bagged the shit out of him prior to playing his first game and even after just a few matches under his belt...

Agree with Deano on Ackland....was third or fourth banana at Port, went to ruck poor Stkilda and got dropped for a D grade hacker in Rix and now is with us .....not a great CV in my books.
He might look like Tarzan running around with a few of our newbies but has spent most of his career playing like Jane...
He has reasonable skills but wont be taking us to our next flag.... we are waiting on Hampson to do that along with assistance from Jacobs and Aisake...

Fair call - I am always up for giving someone a fair shot, however I read it with the Saints that it was more of a case that Ackland had to walk before they made him run. And I am just a little nervous about this being a sizable deficiency for us. If Ackland does turn out to be ordinary, who will do the ruckwork? And how will our young midfield learn to get first use of the ball?

No doubt the ruck division in the short term is our biggest deficiency. If we can break even in the ruck, we will win games. I think our defense (a weak area for the past few years) will improve this year and our offense has a bunch of weapons. Midfield now has depth and class.

Yep agreed. The defense also will improve this year because of the improvement in our midfield. The ball wont go rushing back through the centre of the field so quick.

At least with the ruck, it will give our young guys a chance to learn to read the play off an opposition ruckman. I remember Hawthorn of the 80's became masters of this when playing teams with superior ruckmen (eg. the 2 Maddens).

Hey NYTdog - on a completely different topic, I have just moved to the US for a stint and just wonder if you know the best way to watch Carlton games from OS.

Every team has a decent list and potential...

Where we lack is having structure and tactics that the players know how to implement...

Also the amount of disposals we screw up...

All I can see is I hope the coaching staff has helped improve these...
