Blueyonder,

Can you have a look at my previous thread and indicate to me what Whitnall has actually achieved in the last 5 years?

If he is so good - why did Fev win the Michael Tuck medal and not him?
Why hasn't Whitnall finished consistently in top 3 in b and f..?

Ratten was made captain all those years ago because he had the runs on the board - multiple placings in the best and fairest /etc.

Whitnall has no runs on the board and would be a good pick up for another club that could utilise his reading of play and understanding of the game.

top 15 pick please.

i agre with you except i dont think we'll get a top 15 pick for him, maybe if we threw in our PP we might be able to strike a deal with richmond who have pick no.8 or maybe best case geelong who need a forward now that kingsley is almost certain to be gone, they've already picked up hawkins so they can think of that as their early draft pick and whitnall as topping (whitnall and topping  ) but i think pick 7 might be asking for too much.

i said before that lance/murph should be co-captains but now i think the club should have balls and force kouta to captain next year with murphy, im not sure if this is true but it is quite possible the club told kouta to step down from the captaincy because he was doing such a bad job early in the year and that was when he announced he wouldnt captain on, my point being that kouta might still want to captain the club but was told not to. just a thought.

What makes Murphy captain material? I know he is a great player and all, but he seems pretty shy and doesn't seem to say that much on the field as say, a Stevens does.

My opinion-

Captain- Whitnall
Vice-Captains- Stevens, Fevola, Lappin

IMO he has all the makings of a captain, he doesnt set a foot wrong off the field, is courageous, is very committed, always does the team things (great example was when he tried to 'take a player with him' after getting injured against the lions), is very smart, knows more about football than 3/4 of our team. obviously, he's going to be too shy to be giving instructions to senior players in his first year but the captaincy is probably the thing he needs to have the confidence to do that. that's just my opinion anyway and that was one of the reasons i suggested a co-captain rather than him on his own.

I love Lance, but how can you have a captain that is now quite clearly overweight again.

We cannot have a role model like that. He always seems to lose weight in the pre-season and then put it on again.

Looking at him on Sunday, he looks all puffy again. Really frustrating.

He started off like a house on fire early this year when he was trim, but the second half of the season he went back to his old self as he put on weight. Too me he is embarrasing Carlton. I cop so much shit from people calling Lance fat.

Unfortunately it is true..................

i think that it would be very unfair to overlook Simpson and to a lesser extent Walker in favour of Murphy as co-captain or even vice-captain. he has only played 11 games. To claim he is captain material is bulls*it. I'm not saying he isn't, i'm just saying we dont know. We've seen enough of Simpson to know that he would make a good leader. Intelligent player, takes risks and never gives up. The 'never gives up' part is what i respect so much during these dark days as it must be so hard for the players to motivate themselves. He also appears a potential game-breaker which is important. I would be very happy to see Simpson as captain next year. To have such an enthusiastic player as leader would be great for the club for many reasons. However, some of the older players would need to be included as either co-captain or vice-captains so that it is not obvious that the club has little faith in them bc that could really hurt our performances.

Overall i would like:

Captain: Simpson. If co-captain then Simmo and Lance

Vice-Captains: Fevola, Thornton, Lappin
DVC: Stevens, Walker, Scotland

i know that it is a lot of players but it is hard to see any other options that can protect now and the future. Perhaps the leaders could be given individual roles so that they all feel important. Eg: have Fev helping the young guys kick for goal (as i have read he has been doing), Lappin teaching the young guys a thing or two about how to read the play etc. (i know everyone goes on about Whitnalls footy smarts but Lappin is even better i think. Occasionally you see the two of them work very well toether actually in a way that most others in the team wouldn't be capable of),Thornton/Whitnall help the young defenders, Scotland/Simmo/Walks assisting the midfield so that mayb the team gels better together. I don't know it may already happen but it seems like a good way to look after the now and the future.

i agree with what your saying at this stage them two players deserve it more than murph but the problem with that is IMO we cant take the captaincy off one of them in 3 or 4 years when murphy is ready, they're gonna have to keep it till they're about 30 y.o at least and then murphy won't get a proper go at captain.

I think we should start to look at a young aged leadership group to come through together.. and that would include kids like Simmo Walker Fisher Bentick and Murph...i also think Edwards will have it as well as Setanta and Kennedy and probably Gibbs and one or two others from the next draft.

If we do everything right.. it will be an exciting group rising for the next decade.

I think Kade Simpson has shown plenty of leadership....if earning the job is part of it then he has everyone else covered....is there a more improved payer in the comp? All we need is for him to get some Wayne Johnston mongrel and we have "Dominator Mk11"
Does he ever hang his head, does he ever stop trying or running...is he a good role model?.....has to be Simpson or Fev...
