We have unloaded a fair bit of experience albeit most spent their weekends in rehabilitation.

They are obviously looking 2 to 3 years down the track.

It's very rare these days for a team to end up in the final 4 with out adding 2 to 3 established players to their list

We will need the perfect season to contest at the pointy end next year and perfect seasons at Carlton are a rarity

I may agree with the highlighted comment, but we could argue that with the addition of Haynes and the return of Silvagni and Docherty we have effectively added 3 established players who were not available last year.
Also hopefully with better management of injuries we will not average the high number of injured players not available for weeks. And we also have a number 3 draft pick to add to our stock and maybe a DFA or 2.

List changes so far (assuming the draft goes as we expect)….

Out - Akuei, Cunningham, Kennedy, Marchbank, Martin, Mirkov, Owies.
In - Haynes, #3, #38, Lucas C, Ben C, Duffy, rookie draft #12.

S.Durdin and/or J.Carroll not delisted yet but still might get cut depending on our intentions with DFA/Supp.

Think we gave the list a refresh. Lord, Binns, Moir should play next year and a fair chance pick 3 in a super draft will be good to go round 1. Looks at Ben Campo's year in the SANFL I reckon he'll be good to go early. Can't be many that have won the state competition's B & F playing just 6 games and getting the full 18 votes.

Our performance will improve straight up with injured blokes fit to play. Closest we had to a full list was 7 injuries mid year until it exploded to 20 by year's end.
Yes but are we over the injuries.
Walsh back
Acres back
Weiters corkies
TDK foot
Curnow ankle
Doc and JSOS return from ACL
Fogarty pretty serious foot
Durdin C shoulder reconstruction
Cerra Hammies
Okeefe spent 12 weeks out
Matt Carroll hasn't found the training track
Durdin S always injured
Pitto missed big chunks of games
Saad 2 Hammies
Gov goes off injured every game
Cotrell missed most of the season
Motlop stubbed his toe missed most of the year
Boyd missed back half of year

And I didn't see any thing from Lemmey and Moir that suggested they will push others out.

Lord and Binns have upside granted

It's unfair to pin your hopes on three 18 year olds give them a chance

We will need a minor miracle and the greatest medical staff on the planet to contest at pointy end

Caz i am ok with the strategy.
It appears that they have assessed where they are and will try get 3 to 4 finals campaign then have a dip.
Pies have gone the all or nothing and obviously Mitchell thinks a tinker here or there will make the difference. Geelong Port and Sydney have been topping up for years

Trying to build so they are constantly playing finals

I guess it’s probably 1 step back to take two forward.

I don’t buy into Docherty and JSOS being new recruits, we need to move on.

Happy for both Owies and MK. Both have been solid players and seem to be super popular. I wonder how losing Kennedy impacts the playing group, particularly if Voss pushed him out.

Hey Cazzeman
A few things
Whilst it’s disappointing we traded Owies and Kennedy which was obviously the intention months ago
I get that
Two guys with currency
So we get pick 3 which is the main benefit
In a midfielders draft we need a specific mid
Someone who
Is quick with elite foot skills
So Austin hopefully picks the right one
Because if he doesn’t we are ducked again for a while
We still
Need a key defender
Nathan Cooper get him as a rookie pick
The guy should be on an AFL list
Haynes is a list clogger
Coaches are payed to coach specific areas these days
Not players who fill a spot
We have to have Durdin and or Motlop step up
Owies was our best small forward
I still reckon Durdin has big upside if he gets his body right
Motlop I am less convinced
And I’m not into sentimental shit as you know
If there is better talent available don’t pick Scott’s twins

I'm conflicted about losing Kennedy and Owies.
We all loved their dedication, but it has to be said that neither were able to consistently influence games.
The public humiliation of Bam Bam in that Elimination Final debacle was cruel, and he was finished with us from that day on.
Matt Owies is a good bloke and an honest player who gave us all he had. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough.
Still, West Coast and Footscray will be better for their presence in 2025.

Everyone talks about Kennedy public humiliation. Now cmon. It’s a final and he wasn’t contributing.

Granted i thought it was a strange decision, but our coaching group have every right to demand more from experienced players.

While it’s sad to lose Kennedy. He went missing a lot in games. He was very slow, and had the running ark of the titanic. He seemed to jog after his opponent.

Now let’s get realistic. Forget about him as a person.

We are better off being forced to play Binns, Lord and the younger guys instead. When they came on we got a youthful kick in the team.

Two years running we are going great guns when we had injuries, and then when the so called senior players came back we started losing.

We need youth. I mean look at Hawthorn. I am too concerned about losing our depth, but we are getting some really good youth in, and that may make a difference and make us more fresh.

Sad to see Kennedy go, but I wish him well.
Spewing he didn't hit the tonne.
Also sad to see 2 of our 4 players that played every game this year go.
Let's hope we can keep players on the park next year and have a good run at it.

After the trade period our VLF team should be working tirelessly to add some quality depth to get around the kids we draft so we can speed up their development.

So do we offer pick 3 and 38 to Richmond for picks 6 and 10?
Or to the Kangas for pick 2 to make sure we get either Jagga or Finn?

A bit sad about Kennedy.
One game short of playing his 100th with Carlton.

afl website said he played 118 for us, including all 24 this year

as someone else said, its a tough business

He played 118 games in total, 19 of those for GWS.
Stuck on 99 games.
Check it on the CFC website.

cheers

Interesting that both Owies (dropped for Lions final last year), and Kennedy (discarded during Lions final this year) are the ones we've moved on. Obviously someone (Voss?) didn't rate either of them for some reason.

We could have also fought the Owies charge this year but in the end let it go ..... they didn't seem to care. Quite strange actually.

Yep, we need to trade pick 38 otherwise it will be wasted.
