Conversely, a great chef can fashion of those same materials a confection of greater value than a commonplace apple tart, with no more effort than an ordinary cook uses to prepare an ordinary sweet.

Thats a longwinded way to say "you cant make strawberry jam out of cowshit".

If by this time next year we still can't beat Melbourne, Brisbane and GWS, it will back to the media for Michael Malthouse.

So nearly 2 years on, he hasn't got them 'playing as a team' ????

What a waste of money this has turned out to be.

Are you implying that Ken Hinkley, the reigning AFLCA "coach of the Year" has performed better than Mick over the same period, even though Hinkley inherited an inferior list and is paid less than half the money Mick is on?

CHAMPION DATA 2012

CARLTON
Defenders 14th
Midfield/Rucks 3rd
Forwards 2nd
LIST QUALITY 9th

PORT ADELAIDE
Defenders 18th
Midfield/Rucks 12th
Forwards 17th
LIST QUALITY 17th

Ages! AND whats coming through?
its called context... something it seems youre struggling to grapple with.

again... who are the players we have had coming through from the last 5 drafts?

and 2011 is when youre talking about... we lost to wc in a final.. the previous years wooden spooner

so what does that all tell your analytical mind?

Mr S: 0
Mr C: 1

Its all over Mr S, this matter has long been settled with facts, common sense, integrity and an admission of guilt and shame by Malthouse and Wiley themselves.

facts speak for themselves.....

Nobody can skirt around the facts - nobody

This of course doesnt mean we cant win 8 of the last 9 games and make the 8

You never know Mr S, Mick may decide to pull his finger out and come to work at Princes park, and take his coaching role seriously, like when he coached the Bulldogs and like what Ken Hinkley did in his first senior coaching gig. You do realise that Hinkley is the reigning AFLCA "caoch of the year"? Pretty good effort in his first year with the 2nd worst list in the league.

...and now this from Mick

Carlton coach Mick Malthouse says the game of Australian football has become unrecognisable.

Malthouse, a 701-game coaching legend, is fed up with the aesthetics of the modern game and has called on the AFL to make some rule changes to get the game back on track.

"If I wasn't coaching, I'd hate the game," Malthouse said at the MCG on Thursday morning.

"We've moved so far away from what our Australian game was."

Ken Hinkley seems to be able to recognise our great game....Walls said Hinkley was one of the most honest young players he has ever coached

Ken Hinkley ladies and Gentlemen

You mean Robbo can't read the shit he writes?

Or MM should quit because he doesn't subscribe to the HUN?

Now compare this with Mick, Only Laidler believed, only Laidler - and he was given the Mick Flick like Eddie, because we needed to raise the 700K for a specialist with dodgy ankles who is being hidden in the pockets and on the wings....Yes ladies and gentlemen....

Why couldn't they have done some due diligence for once, like Hawthorn did with Clarko, and spend $400k on a coach and the other $600k into recruiting/development ???

Get rid of the old money sponge grump !

Can't believe the absolute sh!t I read in that article.

Who wouldn't agree that the game is a far less enjoyable spectacle over the past few years, than in the 90's and 80's??

If it weren't engrained in my system, I too, wouldn't have a love for the sport anymore. Mick spoke his mind, I'd suggest it's an opinion many have.

All you have to do is watch ANY game from the 90's to see how far the game has fallen. I could list the problems but it would go on forever... in fact the 'love of game waning' thread sums it up pretty well.

The biggest problem for me would be just about every knee jerk reaction rule brought in over the past 8 years. They are all rubbish. The game has become layers of rules upon rules upon rules. With more coming every year. It's killing the sport.

Who can honestly say the game is in better shape now than even 5 years ago??

Robbo is just one of the very many flogs that are part of the problem. I don't know why I opened that paper.

I dont think its about money. Mick's 1 million doesnt break the budget - its about whether he was the best person for the senior coaching position, whether Wiley is qualified and competent to be a director of coaching and development....whether the only FRESH coaching talent we could bring in was a green Brad Green because Mick liked him during an Irish tour.

There are lots of questions we can ask in hindsight.

Our footy department is one the best funded at almost 22 million per year. 8 million dollars more than Port's footy department.

The state of our list was in reasonable condition at the end of 2012 when Mick arrived. Even Mick acknowledged this and said he wouldnt tinker too much with the playing list.

CHAMPION DATA 2012

CARLTON
Defenders 14th
Midfield/Rucks 3rd
Forwards 2nd
LIST QUALITY 9th

PORT ADELAIDE
Defenders 18th
Midfield/Rucks 12th
Forwards 17th
LIST QUALITY 17th

One pre season and everything changes.

And its not just about your mids/rucks,. hawthorn was predicted to win the 2013 GF - Champion data had their mids/rucks ranked well below ours, but their defence was solid as well as forwards. They recruited the master midfield coach in Ratten to improve their stoppages and midfield work (their weakness which was exposed by the swans in the previous years GF loss). They also recruited a big Backman in Lake, who won the 2013 Norm Smith medal.

HAWTHORN
Defenders 2nd
Midfield/Rucks 9th
Forwards 1st
LIST QUALITY 1st

What Mick needed to do in the short term was improve out defence, and top 4 was very possible. that was his goal anyway. We ended up winning 11 games, the same as the previous year which was riddled with injuries.

Mick better a move on this year ladies and gentlemen although tanking has been flagged already to get a nice first round pick
