in the entire history of AFL/VFL no team has qualified for finals with a points against as bad as ours (bottom four -ranked 15th) let alone make a gf and win it.
Yet Carlton still has the 4th best percentage.
This season is bizarre, two wins between 2nd and 13th with just a handful of games to go.
i wonder why the comp is so close? are we finally seeing the parity they all talked about in the 90's when the draft was implemented for a more even playing field? did it really take 30 years to happen? or is this season just a one off?
We have teams that were supposed to be utter garbage pushing for the eight and last year's premier struggling to even make finals.
My feel is that it's a one off.
As an aside I think the mid-season change in HTB interpretation has probably hurt Carlton the most with our heavy reliance on strong but not quick midfielders. Cripps has been pinged multiple times despite getting a handball away under the new interpretation.
Agreed
Matt Kennedy has been slaughtered. He just needs to look in the balls direction to be pinged. Ridiculous rule change.
The only bloke who bothers to pick up the damn pill is the bloke pinged. It goes against everything they have been coached to do throughout their career.
caught the last bit of the Top-Two-contender** vs crows tonight and rode Crows home for a four goal to one last 15 minutes and an enjoyable upset** steal of the game listening to tripleM.
they were talking about a HTB decision and/or the recent changes to interpretation. Sounded like Dunstall (maybe) said “now there’s an example of a player taking two steps (with the ball ) then being tackled and not disposing of the ball correctly and it isn’t payed and yet we have all these tackles of players with sono prior opportunity being pinged (then gave an example or two from tonight’s game)
one of the other commentators drolly states “I actually have no idea anymore”. and that was that.
AFL house gets a lot right but sometimes they go off the deep end and WAY too many players are getting cheap frees lurking and delaying tackles on opponents by half a second to make its seem like there was prior. we got pinged a tonne for early in the season and then seemed to wise up a bit to it.
for the players taking the game on this is really depressing i would imagine. scraggers can wrack up possessions and nullify much superior opponents. well done AFL can’t wait for the seasons end when club officials and coaches have more latitude for honest opinions about this.
