MORE YEARS FOR ROOKIES?

THE AFL is considering a change to the rules where players would be able to stay on rookie lists for up to five years.

Currently players can only spend three consecutive seasons on the rookie list before needing to be upgraded to the senior list or delisted.

But as part of discussions with clubs, the League has had support for extending the limit to five years under certain parameters in a bid to allow clubs more time to develop key-position types and ruck talents as rookies.

Under a possible stipulation raised, rookies would be able to stay on the rookie list after their third year if they have not played a certain number of games at AFL level by then and again at the end of their fourth year.

Barring any surprises, three of these guys won’t be with us next year.

There’s an obvious three… it’ll put a dint in the culture, but at the end of the day, “the best ability is availability”.

We’ll start next season with at least 10 players on zero games - 11 if you include Binns.

To summarise the posts that got lost…

Including Duffy & the two Camporeales, we have 48 players.

10* players don’t have contracts. Five on the Primary List. Five* on the rookie list.

Boyd will move to the Primary List. If there are new rules permitting a 4th or 5th year on the rookie list, expect 32 games in four and a half years to be outside those parameters.

Those same parameters will almost certainly shut the door on Cunningham or Marchbank moving to the rookie list.

Cat A: Cincotta, O’Keeffe, Lord*, M.Carroll*

* No official word on Lord & M.Carroll, but they should have offers. Lord a certainty with standard MSD deals, though M.Carroll might be let go if he needs excess time to get his groins fixed.

Owies is interesting. He's a consistent performer but he hasn't been signed, yet. Could we be interested in Ainsworth after missing out on Haywood. Restricted free agent. Plays up the ground more than Owies but similar score involvements. Offers a bit more speed around the ball. It will be interesting to see what coin Owies is after. He's a perfect SOS target. Played YJFL with his boys, lured him home from basketball. If he'd been on GWS' list he'd be a near certainty.
