Regards Cazzesman

How many of those do you rate as having the ideas and wherewithal to be a senior coach?

Out of all those names, I rate Simon Lloyd, but not as a senior coach. He's come from talent ID to development coaching then up the rungs at Freo.

It's a big jump from being task-oriented to being the one delegating, and you'd want to see a bloke who has actually been floating some really good ideas that have been adopted across the board within their club environment as some evidence of their capabilities.

Have any of those names shown that? Will this course suddenly make them more intellectually capable of it? There's a chance, but it's slim.

But if they do sack Mick,

I think Dew would be my pick. Maybe Bassett.

But whoever we get I'd like to see some hunger for the job, and a strong team of decent assistants around them to withstand the early blowtorch from cronies/supporters/media.

That means the old cliche of conducting an interview process.
It also means that the successful candidate will have a strong reputation/mojo to attract decent talent for their assistant coaches, as they recognise that this Carlton has finally become an attractive destination.

To me this is the biggest disappointment of Mick's tenure so far.
Either nobody sees working under Mick as a great opportunity, or nobody wants to work for the salary that CFC is offering.

Either way this situation has to change next year.
I don't want Barker, Green, Capuano, or Laidley at the club next year. I think they would benefit from fresh opportunities too.

excellent choice.

although I've heard he tends to hound the playing group.

Don't know his philosophy but can't fault his pedigree ... and now in his 3rd year under Ross Lyon. His time at the Swans building the Bloods culture and having exposure to Paul Roos and Ross Lyon may give you some guidance on his philosophy.

We should at least seriously consider him and put him through the process (whatever that will be).

not sure, he's been known to take the lead in some matters,
and spins a good tail too. don't think he'd beg for the job though.

..longevity in the industry??.. ....am not saying I agree with this, but like plenty of industries out there, longevity can be the deciding factor.. ....it's not as if this is a well run, professional industry..

Hmm Bassett

Interesting guy,

No nonsense even when he's been involved with the media. Suffers no fools.

Coaching style - In the last three years Bassett SANFL club Norwood has won the flag with Bassett at the helm for the first two. As premier they never topped the 'points for' chart. Last year (Bassett's clone Warren took over) they finished 7th in 'points for' and they still won the premiership.

2014 GF score Norwood 12.10 (82) Port 11.12 (78)
2013 GF score Norwood 10.12 (72) North 4.8 (32)
2012 GF score Norwood 12.7 (79) West 3.12 (30)

The average 'points against' for them in the last 3 years during the minor round is 53.9 points. The average goes even lower in finals matches and finally in the GF's the average is 39.3.

Make of it what you will.

Stats courtesy of SANFL.com.au and Steve Barrett of SA Football Budget.

Mark Stone of Fremantle another assistant to consider; he is currently at Fremantle but has also worked at Sydney and West Coast.
