credit where it's due - Houlihan looked good, he's the type of player that if the team is functioning well so will he.

does that make sense?

He aint no Camporeale, though. That would be too harsh on the boy.

Have watched the game again today. Garlett I can see being given a go this year. Don't think his size is going to be much of a worry. I also wouldn't call his performance last night a cameo. He did a heap of work and was generally impressive.

Garlett performed really well last night, but he's pretty light. If he gets a senior match, he won't spend a lot of time on the ground, I would think. We wouldn't want him getting smashed.

If he does play you'd expect the opposition to pay him more attention than North were when he kicked his second goal. Beautiful positioning and a lovely snap.

Has the attributes to step up to senior level immediately.

BTW having just watched the Hawks game, a rookie player for them No47 Breust looked so out of his depth I really felt sorry for him. He weighs in the mid to high 70s yet looked like a schoolboy, couldn't get a touch, was pushed around like a rag doll, and was more often than not in the wrong spot. Meanwhile, a much lighter Garlett looked like he was well and truly at home playing senior AFL.

Cheers BI, I'd been trying to find that, and they cut it out of the foxtel replays. Got to love the kid.

Important point. This is an area we needed major improvement.

The question is was it us quicker or was North struggling because of being in a heavy workload prior to the season and use being primed for this game? Or a bit of both?

Whatever it is we can get even quicker. Add Walker, Browne, Yarran (who really didn't play) Pfieffer & Hampson to the side and we get even quicker. To me we actually played a bit tall last night to counter the Roos.

Can we fit 4 key defenders plus Cloke, Kruezer, Jacobs in one side when the bench is smaller?

Who are the four key defenders? If you're referring to Waite, Bower, Thornton and Jamison I think we'll be fine because we lined up with all of them last season. Cloke will play up forward a lot as will Kruezer and that's what allows us to carry in three ruckman (if you can still refer to Cloke as that giving the lower playing weight).

I'm also sceptical about the pace of the team but most of this heavy workload talk with regard to the Roos has popped up after the result... hmmm. ;)

Nah, sorry mate, slipped out of my pocket (Foxtel had boxing for the first 30 minute of the IQ recording).

Sure someone will have a copy though.

Does anyone think our backline may be a little top heavy with Jamo, Bower, Waite, Thornton (and possibly Setanta) down there? I'd like to see Waite play a Richo type role on a wing. Good pace and a great leap, he can drop back when needed and also push forward as a foil for Fev and he'd be so hard to cover.

I don't think we are. Both Thornton and Jammo have proved they can play on big or smaller forwards. Like on a Jonno Brown to a didak

Thronton and Waite are mobile defenders, both can move up to a wing or half forward.

I have to admit we are desperately seeking a big defender. I know the Bombers took Hurley before us but boy would that kid have slotted in well with us

Emma Quayle's match report of our game in "The Sunday Age" - apparently 50 point flogging means the winning team didnt actually participate in the game.

Sorry Emma but when did you take on the job as North Melbourne's Communication Manager.

And as for the general match report from "The Age" - the last 2 paragraphs beggars belief:

The other new draftee Carlton unveiled in this game, third-round pick Mitch Robinson, copped a couple of solid knocks but worked extremely hard and showed a lot of promise.

North's first choice at No.9 in the draft, Jack Ziebell, picked up 12 disposals and kicked two goals, including a great gather and snap in the last term.

Agro, it was dissapointing, I agree.

But maybe, just maybe, its because she couldn't get to anyone at Carlton, because, we are finally treating it like what it is - pre-season practice matches, a luxury that we have not had for quite a few years. Yeah, we flogged 'em, but really, who gives a shit, its the 'who cares' cup.

Love it.

Wait for the real stuff.

Oh yes I am waiting for the real stuff - and so is my wad of imported "Cohibas" - which I will light up after every game that certain teams are going to get theirs.

While watching the game with MW (who as I've mentioned before isn't all that interested in football) she said "I really can't stand that guy, he's a full of himself wanker".

I'll give you one guess which Ooompa Loompa she was talking about.
