I may have left a few players out, our picks might have been 1 and 4, not 1 and 3. Anyway, "everyone" might mean all of the top recruits but I do remember a few dissenting voices around at the time. The fact that Collingwood reached and got good service (more than good in Pendlebury's case) out of their players just shows you that you don't always have to go with consensus. That's not how it works.
That's fair to say, but if you're referring to forum posters that's not much anecdotal evidence to support the idea what all 16 clubs (at the time) would have done with Pick 1. The word was Murphy.
We've gotten great service out of Murphy, he is/was a worthy number 1 selection.
I wasn't saying he wasn't. I'm saying Pendlebury is
more worthy and there is no reason why that may not have been evident even then. Collingwood may have still taken Murphy and may have preferred Thomas over Pendlebury but they still seem to have gone against consensus. Even Verbs on this site hinted that there was no reason to believe that Collingwood didn't choose the right players when everything finally comes out in the wash up. That was when Verbs used to be a valued contributor had yet to turn into a Malthouse hating automaton.
I'll give us Gibbs, I'll even give us Lucas and arguably Kreuzer. However, Murphy was a small bloke with no real great speed, Pendlebury was an athletic standout, younger, still developing and fresh out of Basketball. He could do a bit of everything, took the game on and looked like he belonged. I'm not talking about risk aversion, I'm talking about ranking players as you see them.
You can have a few washouts but you regain that elsewhere. We played it safe with most of Hughes' era, went a bit wild when that wasn't working and gave away too many draft picks. We need the endeavour to actually make the tough decisions, take the chances at the opportune time and play it save when that is actually the wisest thing to do, not the default option. We've played a rationalized game on beggar's money.
