I don't think so. But by the same token, The "improvements" over the past 6 weeks have been overstated as well.

From the depths we previously were at, it's understandable.

Fair enough.

By no means was I under the impression before Friday that everything was ok and looking up, but just some of the commentary and posts here over the weekend sound like we've lost by 60+ for the last 6 weeks.

That was more a result of playing too many underdone players etc. Port are one of the fittest teams in the comp and we had one of the worst preseasons imaginable.

Doesn't make it right and doesn't hide that fact that our list is extremely poor. TBH I'm tired of the excuses for poor performances. 100 point loses should never be tolerated no matter how many injuries.

I never said it did make it right - just saying there might have been compounding factors which exacerbated the loss. We still would've lost both games, just think the margins were blown out.

There were "compounding factors", our list is crap and our kids coming through are either not up to it or a long way off. I just get tired of the excuses. FFS fix it.

The notion that injuries can be used as an excuse highlights two key failings at this club over a number of years, given we have to make the same excuse year after year:
1) Our injury management has been terrible. How often do we hear "we can never select our best 22" or "we would've won if we had x, y and z"?
2) Lack of depth from poor drafting, development and overall list management.

I hope these issues one day get sorted out, but I fear this time next year we'll be making the same excuses.

In summary, this game did not go well.

This game highlighted a few issues, one is the terrible recruiting means we have no depth, so many of our players get over-worked because there aren't enough good players to choose from.

We have been chasing our own tails due to the amount of underdone players we have had from pre-season. I still think if it wasn't for that we would be in the 7-10th area, but at least this way we can't pretend we are in premiership contention.

Someone posted ports recruitment record over the last few years - that's what has made them a capable team -

It's the superior fitness and attitude of the group that pushed them to the upper echelon.

They have so many of their draft picks from 5-30 playing from the past 5-6 years that has given them this solid young core.

Well done to them.

Look at how many of Carlton's 5-30 draft picks over the last 6 years are going. It's despicable recruiting that has killed us.

Even with a full team we are just a handful of good players, carrying the plebs.
It's been the same for years and years, either Judd, Fev, Betts, Waite or Murphy having a blinder with the majority of the time Judd dragging everyone over the line.

Nothing has changed.

The one thing I have gotten out of this season was the last 5 weeks the attitude seemed to change. Hopefully malthouse can keep bringing in a team mentality!

You're just an armchair expert, with no credibility.

Of course!

Yet if I had chosen to study (and I use that term loosely) journalism instead of economics, I could be getting paid for my armchair observations! Like Stevo and co.
