They played that Riccardi touched goal on the big screen before the game. Robbed twice in one night.

Unfortunately we are getting into the "happy with the effort" situation and I hate that.

Yes, the effort was there and that's great but it just shows our current mindset especially from supporters. Geelong were poor and if it wasn't for Selwood and one or two others we would of won.

The positive is there is something to build on. I still strongly believe if we can get the club right both on and off the field it can turn around and turn around quickly. Personally I believe MM is doing a great job. The improvement in Rowe, Menzel, Buckley, Curnow, Warnock, Casboult, Armfield, Yarran, White is there for all to see. Docherty is a very good addition. Thomas, although i still believe we gave away too much, is atleast giving his all and that's all we can ask.

If we can have some smart recruitment and drafting in the next 2-3 years we can be back up the top. We just need some class, leadership and mongrel to add to our role players. Depth is the other issue.

The last point is Gibbs. What a great game and credit to him. It's as good a game I have seen him play. I am one who is happy for him to go given our current situation but if he can working like he did last night I am happy for him to stay. It just has to happen more regularly.

The lack of defensive strategy to counter tomahawks influence in the first half was ultimately the killer.
Poor coaching.

Both something I was please with and then annoyed by:

Casboult takes a mark on the 50, at an angle, in the second q. Carrazzo, having stated that the clubs leaders need to step up during the week, goes over to him and gives him some encouragement. He shows some leadership. It's good to see. Casboult fluffed the kick but it was marked by Warnock and a goal was eventually scored.

Later, Carrazzo takes a mark on the 50. He clearly cannot kick the distance, and looks to pass. Jamison, who is a decent kick, but not spectacular, and who has kicked 2 goals in over 100 games demands the hand-off running past. Carrazzo gives it to him, and Jamo runs into trouble and bombs it long.

Dumb football. We'd only recently shown that we could trouble their defenders with height deep in the forward 50. Jamo should know his bloody limitations, and Carrots too.

It wasn't just Gibb's best performance for us, it was one of the best midfield performances I've seen.

29 touches, but each one was a release valve, not sure of his efficiency, but it felt like he didn't miss all night. And four goals. Took the game on was pretty ballsy with his decision making. Excellent effort ... but what made it one of the best performances I've seen is it's the best job I've ever seen done on Selwood maybe ever. Combine the two efforts, and it really should have been a match wining game but for a few spuds we're surrounded with on the list who are dragging everyone down...

Firstly, our best performance of the year as a group including coaching I thought. MOST players played their part. To beat teams we need this even contribution every week however, in the position we find ourselves we can't afford for 1 or 2 players to be off as we don't quite have the talent other teams do. For example Geelong probably had 1 or 2 more mids they could rotate through the middle. Having said that our taffeta did a wonderful job last night that's why it was so gutting that Selwood kicked the winning goal.
In terms of player contributions Waite is down in confidence and just making poor decisions. Garlett - 2 easy marks dropped - footsteps??? Also, he's defensive pressure was terrible - at one stage he let Mackie just run off from the back line with no chase which resulted in a goal.
I'm sorry to say this but Touhy is a poor defender and leaks to many goals each weak. Can't deny his toughness or attack on the ball but the last 18 months have been terrible in my mind. Like to know how many goals he has conceded.
Armfield - great tagged/run with player. But there are times when he needs to go and attack the ball and use his pace to our advantage - this means he needs to back himself and sometimes run off his player a la Yaz.

Positives
Menzel gets better every week - can't wait till he he gets more ore seasons into him and a greater indurance base. He even had a go in the middle last night.

Gibbs - so proud of him. Can't stand supporters bagging him.

Warnock - having his best season for sure - Christ he took a mark and kicked a goal in the fwd line!
Yaz - has matured under Mick - much better defensively and offensively and we know he can to another level.
Docherty - great 1st month - helps when you play for the teM you barrack for! Dies need to improve kicking efficiency.
Rowe - Felt a little sorry for him - definitely got ragged dolled early and delivery to Hawkins was superb. Didn't help with one or turnovers caught him out either. Great comeback after Jamo went on to him though.

Thomas - super effort I thought last night - great marking.
Jamo - superb all night.
Casboult - I think he's been great around the ground effort wise - but kicking and handballing needs a lot if work. As odd as it may seem and will never happen - he needs a few lessons from one if the best kicks for goal - FEV!

Big rant I know but need to finish on the following:

AFL RANT
- late timeslots for our games all year - gave taken my young boys to game twice.
- pay nearly $600 for membership and told its a fully ticketed affair? Get seat opposite side if the ground in the clouds at L3. Final crowd 39,000!
- over priced food and drink.
- constant and inconsistent umpiring from week to week ( not even talking about abhorrent umpiring the last weeks) we have more umpires now than ever before plus technology yet I firmly believe umpiring is the worst it has ever been since I started going to the footy 36 years.
- what other sport in the world changes it's rules from year to year?
- aFL allowing Essendon* to pay legal fees outside of salary cap beggars belief.
- the list goes on.

Our inability to clear the D50 was astounding. From kick in, I lost count at the amount of times we couldn't get it past half way.

Great effort by the players. You couldn't ask any more from them.

There are just far too many weak links in the chain to consistently perform. McLean, Garlett, Waite, Carrazzo, Robinson and many more all need to be moved on.

Off topic: but Thomas' marking last night was outstanding. He should give Kreuzer a masterclass on how to position your body, use space to advantage, making contact and using leverage.

Good performance, unlucky to lose, which makes last week even worse. Gibbs excellent, if he attacked the contest like that each week he wd be a great rather than good player. Thomas showed great courage which is no surprise, Jeff G didn't which unfortunately also wasn't a surprise. Like to see Hendo at chb, maybe casboult chf, waite ff (or in the ants). Warnock took a very good contested mark, wish he did that more often. Any chance Yarran cd improve his fitness to a point that he cd become a gun mid like Ablett did, he sure has the talent.

MM embarrassed the club again with his childish behaviour at the presser. He is a typical teenage bully, obsequious to ex players and vicious if he gets reasonable questions that in any way challenge his infallibility. Anyone looking for a team to barrack for wd see him and choose someone else. The club needs to tell him to show respect to others, and display his intelligence rather than his immature petulance.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is something wrong with him.
Either way we should have tried to trade him last year.
The slow types don't cut it in today's game.

McLean has always been slow, but this season, he's molasses in a bucket slow. His athleticism is mindblowing. His vertical leap at this stage of his career is about 8cm.

The brain fade not set up goal side of Warrnock to block any run from clean possession (on the Selwood gamewinning goal) when you know you're as slow as molasses in a bucket is really hard to take this morning. 120 minutes of just about every person to a man putting in for the jumper, only to lose because Brock bricked it with a minute to go?

For this I shall henceforth name him McLeanne.

That pisses me off the most, he doesn't want to go for any contested marks, not even a spoil. How can you be like that as a footballer? His effort was pathetic.

Campbell admits Menz should've got the free. In my mind we won. Menz would've kicked it after the siren. Done.

Cats should be very worried. Been crap for a month now.

We shouldn't be getting too carried away with this "gallant loss". Geelong have been ordinary since beating the injury riddled Hawks. Thrashed by Port, beat Tiges by 5 points, belted by Freo, beat North at home by twenty with North running all over them in the last quarter, flogged by Sydney.

We just aren't good enough in tight finishes, should've belted Tiges, nearly blew wins against WC and Crows, then there's our latest two outings. Every close finish sees the same lack of polish on show, panicked bombs, fumbles, can't hit targets, not manning up, not running to create space. Classic lower order club mentality. Top teams always think they can win, bottom clubs always thing they can lose.

A lot to like in this game, plenty of endeavour by most but we are a long, long way off being a final eight side.
