This is the best result because it expose how far away from agood or top 4 side we are .We are a dumb football side and so predictable .
one question all year have we ever played 4 quaters of football?

Went to game disappointed but not entirely surprised with result
6 to 8 day break killed us plus forgettable performance from most of our players
Definitely need more skill in midfield greater spread of players in midfield and have been crying out for a strong key position forward for about 4 years
One pleasing aspect was that we didn't get beaten by 80 points albeit the swans ran out of legs in the last quarter

Most disappointing to see us continually kick it to unopposed Mcveigh
Disappointing that Menzel didn't play
Casboult and Minnesota diabolical
Liked the look of bell
Other than that nothing to get excited about

Flew up for the game and just got back.

It was obvious all night that we either had no run in us or simply weren't prepared to run. We would kick the ball around the backline, switch sides and from half-back, eventually kick long to a contest at wing/half-forward, which we would generally lose. There was hardly any overlap or proactive moment to provide options. It was just static for most of the night. Did we have little run because we weren't prepared to run hard enough, or did the exertion from the last few weeks of catch-up footy, coupled with a six-day break, finally catch up to us?

Agree with other posters' observations about Sydney always having a player behind the contest to provide an option for the handball. We never seemed to do anything about it.

The forward line was a shambles. No structure or system at all. We just bombed it in there and hoped for the best. Where is the method of attack? It is surely a little bit more subtle than just blasting it in from 70-80m out. Where are the hit-up targets? It probably wouldn't have made any difference, but why didn't we try Henderson forward? Walker forward? Both were having good games in defence, but we were getting smashed and we had to try something! I want Casboult to make it, but he simply is not offering enough. We need to work to setting down some sort of viable forward structure.

BV may be referring to clearances (ranked 3rd) and first possessions; also ranked 3rd for contested possessions.

18th for uncontested possessions.

had a blast in Sydney.
gee I'd forgotten what a spectacular city she is.
coming in on the airport train to Circular Quay, you see the bridge and harbour..
it's fabulous!! felt like I came from a provincial town.
then...great hotel views too, caught up with an old friend.
perfect weather..drank champagne by the harbour ate anti pasto..lost time..
got to the game in the nick of time. (shoulda gone dancing instead) heh-heh

3 things I learnt on the trip.
1: I know there is great coffee in that town, but I did not find it.

2: Pretty on the outside, but soulless when it comes to loving our great game. barely a pulse.
(what carlton clem wrote is spot on...the crowd and venue were 'no soul simmons'. no vibe..no passion. supporters can't be arsed going to a Finals game when their team are Top Four??) Family next to me..Swans and one Carlton supporter.Pretty much did everything except watch the game or get into it..even when the swans thrashed us in the 3rd quarter. the blues member texted through the entire debacle.

3: can't wait till next season, and I will NEVER go back to that stadium. Shan't!!
(go blues..get better......or else we'll rip your bloody arms off. )

I don't recall any one saying this but swans attacked our weakness.

McVeigh's gut running with betts as the opponent killed us all game.

Betts has been pretty and cute in the forward line that doesn't have the stuff for a midfield role.

I will be happy to move betts on to another club.

Horses for causes. He is a brilliant small forward. He is not a midfielder, If McVeigh is running off him then change matchups but we dont have enough midfielders who can run both ways.

We had a patchwork team out there.

We were right on the fence to give my kids a real close encounter and our guys weren't frothing from the mouth for the contest, meekness is a word that comes to mind.

Swans took the foot off the pedal in the 2nd half last week and had 8 days rest and whereas we used up every ounce of energy in the 2nd half last week to get us over the line.

Smashed in the midfield. The less I say about the midfield leaders of last week the better.

The Swans had system, strength and desire in the guts and surprisingly spread really well.

Structure was a real issue. That was coaching or strategy or what? We can't break lines look up and nothing there. Really sad.

Swans are a top 4 team and played as such. Gallant effort by our guys when we were making up the numbers.

The surface of the ground was pathetic. Looked like carpet but more like a skating rink. Really bad but both teams had the same challenge. Swans held their feet better. why?

Season over. Great way to finish the year albeit lucky.

We have a lot of gaps. Casboult was my weakest link and He needs to improve a lot because hes not AFL ready. Need to fix up tackling, shepherding, kicking and find new personnel in the midfield. kPs can wait...we have them if they stand up.

Well done, but expect top 4 next year....and to do that we do need to add 5 or so new really good players in the guts.

Missed Kreuzer

You expect top 4 next year? Sorry but who the flower are you to expect top four from this mob?

On what basis??? Seriously, make a reasoned case for "expecting top 4 next year"!

I hope we finish top four next year, and of course it's possible I suppose - but I have no right pretending that we aren't miles off the pace, and that our list isn't getting worse, not better.

Expectation is a personal thing aramari.

Who the @#$%&! am I? I'm just a supporter who has been waiting 10 years for a list to build up with a plethora of high picks and good development.

Everyone would expect Carlton to be a top 4 team with the picks they've had. Get it?

And if my expectation is far fetched and leads to my personal disappointment and delussionment, well what's the difference with what I was feeling at the end of each year in the Ratts era? Same thing.

Furthermore, we are not a top 4 team and borderline top 8 team. Everyone including yourself can see we need more quality than we have. I am saying that with an addition of 5 very good players to fill gaps we will be a better team. Don't you think? With the addition of Kreuzer we'd be better than having Casboult. Dont you agree.

Well that's call improvement, and that what we all expect. Hence my expectation.

Now if we dont get the 5 or so new quality peronnel on our list next year, and we dont see improvement of the players who cost us high draft picks then I'm afraid we will be middle of the road.

I expect improvement.

We finished 6th, played shithouse and fatigued against a top 4 team. With a bit of improvement, we can move 2 spots higher.

Its all theoretical and based on hope, but I saw something special last weekend and so did you, and it gave us hope and promise. I can't pretend that didn't happen. Are you thinking I'm pretending?

Its a tough business footy, and tell me did you think Port would even come close to making the 8 this year?

There's a lot of luck, and changes which happen on a weekly basis in footy let alone over a preason, trade and draft period. Just like anyone, I'd like to see a bit of luck go our way. This year we got a bit of luck with Essendope. From that we saw what our players CAN do and DID do on a sunny day in September at the G...that's luck.

With a bit of luck, good trading, recruitment and development we can and should improve on 6th position. I'm sure everyone Carlton learned a lot about the team and how to improve it this year. Everyone.

I have good reason to expect a top 4 position let alone a 8 position in 2014. I hope you understand where I stand with my optimism aramari. The glass is half full.

You expect success because we had a few high draft picks a million years ago? Who are these high picks please?

Walker, Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer, Yarran, Lucas, Menzel are our remaining top 10 draft picks. Some good players, and 1 or 2 of them likely won't be there in 2014. But this is the cream of our recruitment efforts over 10 years, and you expect us to make top 4 next year on the back of this group?

Then you qualify your expectations:

1. "We need 5 new really good new players in the guts"

Oh, is that all? LOL. How many years did it take us to accumulate our 5 BEST new players in the guts? We got 4 really good new players in the guts in 2005-2007 (Murphy, Judd, Gibbs and Kreuzer). That took 3 years of bottom finishes, and they took us to 5th four years later. You expect 5 to come in by 2014 and have enough of an impact to take us to the top 4. And we can accomplish this with a free agent in Thomas, a late first round pick along with trading out previous high picks (I assume) in Lucas, Yarran and Hampson, plus some great late picks and development.

The above is possible, I suppose. Clubs have regenerated quickly in the past. But you EXPECT our midfield to be fixed overnight.

2. "With a bit of luck, good trading, recruitment and development we can and should improve on 6th position"

So if we nail absolutely everything in the off-season, and if we're lucky, we should be top 4 or 5 in 2014.

How is this a realistic EXPECTATION?

This assumes that our key position and ruck talent is top 4, that our skill and fitness level around the ground is top 4, that our existing midfield "stars" improve to a top 4 level of fitness, strength and team orientation, and that North, Richmond, Port, the Dogs, Gold Coast and Adelaide, most of whom have superior depth in young talent all stagnate and that at least 2 or 3 of the teams above us, all of whom have significantly better lists than us, fall off the perch. That's assuming Essendon** are, indeed [REDACTED].

It also assumes that MM can get the team (with 5 new stars somehow falling into our lap) playing as a well drilled, efficient team.

I certainly hope all of the above (plus a good run with injury) occurs, and yes it has happened to teams. You can even believe it will happen in a Blueman kind of way. But your response provides zero rational grounds to EXPECT it.

aramari

we are all hurting from the loss.
we are all hurting from our failure with recruitment and development.
If youre looking for a fight leave me alone and piss off.
You, to me are Mr Cloudy day, and I'm hurting bad enough as it is without your emotional outbursts.

Go pick a fight with an Essendon* supporter or someone who doesnt love the club like I do.

Let me enjoy my outlook and look at how we might turn this problem on its head.
See List management thread to see what I suggest we can do to find a few mids,
It IS possible, not definite, but in your furious state imo you cant see trees for wood.

I know about the No1 picks, they are obvious and we dont have No 1 picks.
What I'm saying about No 1 picks without degrading the players too much is that I expect them to be better than what they showed last night and thoughout the year.
I'm smart enough to know that.

What pick was Sam Mitchell??????

But it seems you're not clear in the head and clouded with anger, to realise that other teams (see the @#$%&! Swans, Cats, Hawks for example) have got great players including mids from their 2nd, 3rd , 4th and 5th round picks...so have most other teams. We got lucky with Simmo at pick 50 a million years ago; that's it!

It is possible, so please be a bit more reasonable and rational with your vitriol.
If you cant see it as possible that's not my problem.

I understand how you feel.

The club knows we have problems and I'm sure this time around we will be active and we will be better at selecting the best fit for our gaps...but this time I think they will be mids mids mids and hopefully somehow we snag Boyd.

Gotta live with some optimism between now and the end of the PSD in December or I will end up as Mr Cloudy Day.

There's Trades to be done. Two weeks of them.
There's Free Agents to target.
There's some jewels mot getting a game and want opportunity.
There's draft to be raided.
There's a PSD to shake out.

We will delist a lot of players this year, not just 3 like last year....you do realise that is on the cards...and with that there's room to make a move or 2 or 5.

I can't force the club to make the right moves but there's a channce we get it right.
There's also a chance that the recruitment department may get lucky for achange.

My points hinged on "a bit of luck" going our way. That's not being unrealistic, that's what we want happen as happens with all successful teams.

We are on the same team. I care as much as you do. Now pick a fight with someone else.
I'm not interested in fighting my own.

I'm interested in ways we can get out of this quagmire and I know it is possible.

I remember the shit we were in in 1991...you know..remember the "calm before the storm" video....and we played in the 93 and 95 GF's and should have in '94 too. IMO we are in a better position now than we were then ....or similar.

Luck didnt go our way in 93 because Essendopes were lucky to cheat the salary cap and get away with it and Neale Daniher exposing the secret to beating Madden and the Carlton midfield...he wasn't even on their books...but they were lucky to have him available to help out.

You missed the important point regarding LUCK...and we need it...that's realistic.
There's also opportunity...to get it right and right the wrongs from the past.

We lost. Get over it. We will strike back and have our day in the sun.
Its not easy winning flags, but it is great being in the finals.

I wish your team all the luck in the world

Actually, yes, we win the ball as well as most.
Contested ball, clearances, first possessions. We dont have a problem winning the ball.
As I have said all along, our problem is retaining possession.
Whether that be workrate, fitness or gamestyle, we cannot link up play to retain possession. Uncontested possession is our issue.

So how does getting more midfielders fix the problem?
Its interesting, the past few years we've been middle of the road for uncontested possession and this year we're last.
Dead last. Yet apparently its because we're lacking midfielders. Yet our midfielders are still OK at winning the contested footy. :?

Sounds like a load of shit to me.

we actually dont have the skill or composure to retain the ball...

anyone who thinks we can hold onto the ball without wanting to run and work hard is talking nonsense

were not very skilled.. and we dont run hard.. we prefer to run fast in bursts...

thats what we do.. dont kid yourselves.

who is a great kick at carlton?
go through the list and see if you can find 33% with a great kick especially under pressure
wed cough it up like unchewed food

that wont cut it im afraid.. youre confusing us with someone else

not midfielders.. hard running both way mids
how do they help?
they put pressure on the opposition.

were witches hats.. thats why we have these huge runs of goals kicked on us almost every week.

we apply VERY LITTLE PRESSURE through the midfield...

The good teams dont play llike that...

Juddy is one of the worst.. he rarely tracks back... and he and Murph set the tone for the others.

we had a great opportunity.. we didnt capitalise
They were 2 men down.
they were underdone..

all we needed was some har d work..and to keep touch with them for 3 quarters...and then we would have run over the top of them

but nooooooooooooooo!!!.. they didnt wanna slip and maybe jeapordise themselves for the freo game.
they didnt want to be honest
they wanted to be cheats

we support a team of cheats...

yes they can argue with me all they like...

but they should use the swans as a marker.. and if they were honest.. (this group is rarely honest).. they would have to agree.

our team cheated themselves and us..!!!..

should have been regulation if they had heart.. pride and a work ethic.. some honesty

freo will smash them!!!... but they will still be honest....!!!

Theyre a champion team.. thats why theyre honest.. ad theyre honest thats why theyre a champion team

Richmond andCarlton???

Theyre not honest....
They just like the spoils that success brings.. but without the hard work

every year the club has a logo and its never about honesty
maybe this year coming the club can call its membership drive
#honesty
and get the players to promise they will give us some..

maybe then...ssomeone around the club will be made accountable.

#HONESTY....
not # BELIEVE

why believe in something youre not honest about???

bust it all down and give us some honesty

our club rarely gives us any honesty... and i do not mean just the players here...

its the tone the club pushes...

#DISHONESTY

Can we get some kind of promise from the players and the club to the supporters for once?
Can they promise #HONESTY ?

Its a landmark year.. and i dont get the feeling of any honesty from this club....

There is a sense of #HOODWINK

what the @#$%&! does #BELIEVE mean... if there is no #HONESTY???

Last night there was no #HONESTY

one of our biggest issues is our skill level under pressure

have too many who take the easy option when some heat is applied, some of those long bombs from last night are a good example

against lesser teams where we are given more space to play we can look like world beaters

to me this shows that we are simply not physical or hard enough in the clinches to retain the ball with quality possession, the Swans showed us up badly last night

hence we need big bodied midfielders who can kick or handball under pressure
