Seems like we always get scored heavily against us when we try and slow the game upband be too defensive. Wish we can play our own running game, especially going into forward line. We have dangerous and unpredictable forwards in there so why not.

Also should advise forwards to stay there so we can have the confidence in moving the ball into forward 5o quickly.

What's everyone's thoughts on this?

Unfortunately that's not up to the forwards Drewgirl.
It's this crap footy most clubs are playing.
It was a shit spectical last night.
I used to refuse to go and watch St Kilda play now it looks like Lyon will destroy another club with his under 9's football.

Rapt with the win but our accuracy has wallpapered over some serious issues for the coaches to address.
For the second consecutive week, we only scored from about 30% of our forward 50 entries while conceding more than 50% at the other end.
It shows we're not dealing with the opposition putting players defensive side of the ball and what's more, we're getting far less value out of our loose player. Yes Gibbs has been very good but winning games of footy is about kicking more goals than the opposition. Let's be realistic. Had Freo not kicked so poorly in front of goal, we would be lamenting another poor result.

I'm not trying to put a downer on the win. Any win in Perth is worth celebrating but the stats over the past 2 weeks tell us that teams have put a plan in place to stifle us and we're not dealing with it. We have some tactical and structural issues to deal with and at the moment, I'm not seeing any methodology in place to attempt to rectify it.

some good points.

does anyone have a stat on how often the opposition score (goal or point) rebounding from our forward 50 entries? just wondering if our poor entries into forward 50 & the high % of shots after forward 50 entries the opposition seem to have are linked.

Amazing the breathtaking footy this guy was for someone who hasnt fired a football shot in 7 months.

*terrible entries inside 50.
*I reckon 3 or 4 key players look either injured or out of sorts.
*Dont think we were the stand out better team or actually deserved to win.
*Hammer teased .. needs to take some consistent steps forward

I reckon Jamo is carrying an injury - this time last year he was playing with more flair - not so this year.
Reckon Armfield is not over the knee entirely.
AJ looked a little out of sorts

Jamo might just be confidence. He made a great spoil on the wing in the last quarter that was the Jamo of old. Great confidence builder.

abusing our players mainly ,

eg dont kick it to him , anyone but him

player x you are useless , do something

look at him , he is shit , what is he doing

that was crap

etc etc

was sickening listening to the vitriol towards our own players

i mentioned it elsewhere but highlight of the night was megan gale turning to the knob behind who had been abusing hampson for about 5 minutes straight when hammer marked and goaled - gave him the dirtiest look and said 'was that good enough for you' the moron was dumbfounded and yelled to his friends "oh my god is that megan gale.... i think thats megan gale - hahahaha" said loudly i better not say anything about hampson anymore

then continued to bag everyone else

you can see him in wookies video of the megan gale shot - clown in the jumper with the old monogram to the back right (thankfully im just off screen)

freo fans were generally good after the game, they are not enjoying ross lyon football at all - i was seated pretty far from them so was spared most of their crap thankfully during the game, they were better behaved than eagles fans though.

subiaco oval is still a disgrace, was about 40 degrees up where we were sitting all crammed in like sardines - less legroom and width in the seats than the worse airline carrier you could ever imagine - seating at the mcg is about twice as wide and 1.5x the legroom

Absolutely correct on both counts. I was in amongst the purple haze and they want to win like any supporter but hate the Ross Lyon style of footy and I'm glad I don't have to watch that garbage every week. As for Subi it's worse than VFL Park was in it's day - shocking ground, the sooner the Burswood Stadium gets built the better.

Because Ron Evans bought the catering company which had the catering contract at the Subiaco and then organized for tHe AFL to fixture all games at Subiaco rather than at the WACA.

Take the 4 points anyday, a win is a win.

However, happened last week and this week, a lot of mindless long kicking, Pagan-style. It's not too bad now that we have better players who are more able to win the one-on-one contests but there isn't much thought into kicking the ball to the advantage of our leading player - we're just bombing the ball onto the head of the target.

We looked better when we lowered our eyes in the 3rd quarter and started using shorter kicks to leading targets in space rather than just aimlessly bombing down the line, and consequently gave ourselves a handy lead.

Paul Williams needs to look at the stoppages issues - too often we are being caught not putting any pressure on the opposition player who is stationed behind the play when the ball is dished out which then gets cleared out towards the fat side of the ground where it opens up and the opposition's F50 entry is more effective (per Blue Vain's comments).

I wouldn't take GWS too lightly - their main problem is fitness and not having many players who have the fitness base built up over a number of AFL quality pre-seasons to run out their games (and the season). Some of their players will be excellent once they develop that fitness base. We have to be more clinical and precise with our disposal.

Henderson was superb I thought. He now has the self-confidence to know that he can compete both in the air and at ground level. He is nimble for a guy his size which makes him hard to tackle once he gets some speed up as he is pretty well built particularly through the hips. More credit needs to be given to him for holding together a defence that otherwise needs a bit of steel. Seems to treat his opponents with the same quasi contempt that Andy McKay used to. Henderson may get caught very occasionally but he is willing to take a risk knowing that the benefits of his approach will not be offset by the occasional failure. He is not afraid a la Scarlett to take the ball once the ball has hit the ground and run and set up play which is critical in opening up further up the ground. Becoming a really important player and much underrated.

A win interstate against an in form opponent is a great achievment no matter what...

We were able to put the ball through the big sticks in the big moments and they werent. Simple as that. How many times have we been on the other side of games like this in the last few years...

What I want to know is, where have all the Carlton haters who reveled in our loss last week disapeared to lol ?

Watched the replay today. I know they had their moments but we really missed our opportunity to put it away in the third. Should of scored at least 3 goals in the last 10 mins when we dominated.

After watching training on thurs, I was terrified about how we would convert. Was obviously very pleasantly surprised that in the end this was probably the difference in the game. Normally we are on the other end of this.

Still plenty to work on but very happily take the 4 points and the 4-1 start.

Modern footy requires the whole team to defend as one which means everyone including forwards need to push up the field. That also leaves a lot of space to run into once a turnover or contested ball is won and with our pace and fast ball movement we capitalise on this a lot. If all forwards stay forward the game will open right up and become a shootout. Could be the trend in a few years.......who knows !
One thing for sure though it wont become a trend in a game where Lyon is involved.

Also Ratts was clever using Judd who had a hard tag no matter where he went up forward. That way he could hold his spot up forward without over compromising our team defense because Crowley was never going to leave his side. We could hold our shape infront of the ball a lot better. Of course this came at a cost of having judd removed from the stoppages but we got the win and trialed a tactic that could come in handy going forward and teams may have to think about it when deciding to tag judd.

So far, every team that's won this round has done so playing some pretty shirty football.

Geelong aside.

Dogs average, North average, St kilda, us...

Er really makes you think...
