For me the decision on Warnock is a big deal. If Ratts drops him I think it’s a good sign, as it shows that past mistakes (ie paying over the odds for him), whether perceived or actual, have not clouded his current decisions. If he doesn’t drop him the cynic in me will think that they want to save face for having paid so much for him.
Because in terms of his performance so far (when you have Jacobs in good form waiting in the wings), he should be dropped.
Matthew Kreuzer against Ess
21 hit outs and 11 disposals
Kreuzer also had 4 tackles.
Robert Warnock against Ess
16 hit outs and 9 disposals
Warnock also had 3 tackles.
Not much difference in that woeful game. I'm sure you can actually teach the players at training on the mistakes that were made during the game. For me, Warnock atleast gets his hands on the ball in the ruck and can palm it down to the players. Kruzer might get taps but it goes anywhere, but kruzer makes up for it around the field.
I just think the more senior games he plays, the quicker he will develop. When l was playing junior tennis, l developed a lot quicker against harder competition, then playing a easier level of play. Same as football. You haven't got as much time as you would in the AFL, compared to VFL.
Warnock has only played 24 games of AFL. He is still a 2nd year player virtually. I think your got more benefit playing him in AFL, then dropping him to the reserves against easier/weaker opponents.
I don't disagree that playing him in the seniors might fast track his development - but IMO that's giving Warnock favourable treatment over Jacobs. I think Warock is in poor form and Jacobs deserves his chance.
