Let's not over-rate players - please. Russell is an average player, not good, average. He kicked a goal last week - that was the only solid thing he did.

The 2004 draft saw us get Russell - average... and Betts - good. The rest are valued at 0.

That's okay, these things happen and you can win every time. Luckily we had the early picks the following year to get Murph, JK and Bower (who still holds some promise).

Premiership teams are made up of a handful of top line footballers and thinkers...Judd, Murph, Gibbs, Kreuzer, Betts, Jamison then all we need is second tier players to fill the remaining 20-22 spots.

I see our list as having about another 14 good footballers with a few more coming through.

When you assess our players, take their Carlton Jumpers off and replace them with a Bulldogs jumper...that will remove all emotions good or bad. Then look at what they've done objectively and ask yourself which of these Bulldogs players you'd like to see wearing the navy blue.

Given those rated around Russell I'd say that was fairly and squarely in the good category.

Yeah well you can only pick them from the draft pool available to you. Take the whole intake from pick 7 down and see how you rate Russell and Betts. Currently they're 2 best 22 players and that's an above average result from 04 IMO

The Recruiting team didn't identify Jammo and really cant take more credit than calling his number.

Crossisca coached him in the VFL the season before he came to Carlton as an assistant coach and was begging us to draft him.

This is not heresay, Crossisca came out with his Jammo love pre draft and said he was pleading with us to recruit him. This was reported pre draft in the media.

2004 was a disaster but the recruiting dept was on a budget that small its embarrassing.

Dont think Hughes has had the carte blanche that has been made out.

He has had to select to specific briefs which at times has hurt us.

Best available = best available according to the brief

This years draft will put the recruiting staff to the test IMO .

If they stuff it up . . . . it's time for a clean-out .

And when will you be in a position to make an assessment as to whether they have stuffed up this year upcoming draft?

I think the 2006 draft was the big test as we had good picks, it was a good and deep draft, we had 3 top 20 picks, and we used 6 picks.

#1 - Gibbs a tick
#17 - Hammer - a big call to take a guy so raw but with so much athletic ability here. WH said he just didn't want to miss out on him but who knows how late he may have fallen to. I suspect he was instructed to invest heavily to find a good ruckman in 06.
#19 - Grigg - tall athletic mid who did well in the sprints at DC....good call?...bad call?......not sure
#35 - Aussie - I like the selection, the only thing that bothers me has been his inability to bulk up in the upper body over 3 pre seasons, something WH can't be expected to predict.
#51 - Benji - tall, quick athletetic mid with an awful kick - bad pick
#67 - Ando - 188cm mid who excelled in 30m repeat sprints but lacks polish and class - I'm not a fan but others are.

I think it is no coincidence that we selected 4 mids and all were 188cm + and all fast except Gibbs.
Kernahan stated pre the 04 draft we needed to get bigger and faster.
I think WH may have had too much poor instruction re "player type" over the years to take full responsibility for our overall drafting strategies and results. Only true insiders would know how much of a free reign he has been given.
