Let's smash the pretenders.

Let's get players to smash their bottom six, Gwilt, Geary, McQualter, Ray, Dawson, Baker target these blokes, give them hell.

Let's get players to annoy the shit out of their top 6, Revolting, Shitzke, Hayes, Goddard, Montagna, Milne.

Let the rest go head to head and see where we end up.

These pricks are primed for a pumping. Chk Chk Boom.

Worried about Jamo !!

He should not be playing as his shoulder is not right and has really struggled since he came back.

Hartlett must come in.

What about Bannister ??

there is no magic formula to beat the Saints... its that simple... play man on man and put pressure on them all game and watch how they crack and panic and change the way they usually play...

The Kangaroos is an average team that beat them up to half time and then ran out of legs as they were 2 down....

Its a good test to see if Ratten can unravel successful game plans, hasn't been able to do so with the Bombers so far. Have to give credit to Laidley, is pretty good tactically.

I'd forget one on one footy for starters. Playing with designated opponents all over the ground gives the opposition MC the ascendency straight away.
If we give them the opportunity to manipulate the structures around the ground, we may as well give up now. Gibbs will be dragged into the BP, Murphy will be taken out of the square and we'll end up with 2nd stringers doing the work.
We should go in with one or two tags and a couple of accountable forwards.

Our midfielders are a strength. Dont give up any ascendency we may have. I suspect Clinton Jones will run with Judd. I'd be happy with that. We just need to smash him at every opportunity. Juddy isn't overly accountable but then again, Jones doesn't hurt you with his ball use as some can. I'd perhaps look at running someone with Hayes and put AJ on Montagna out on the wing. Let Murphy go head to head with whoever they want (I suspect he'll end up with Ball) and tell him to work hard into the forwardline at every opportunity.

As we saw with NM, pressure is the key. The Saints defenders love running forward of the ball. If we can apply chasing pressure and force turnovers, they'll get hurt badly going the other way. Montagna is a big target for us. They struggle for footspeed and he's one of their few mids who can run and carry.

If you go through their list, they have a lot of players with serious deficiencies in their games. They just function well as a team and everyone does their job. I'd run Carrots on Goddard as a half forward. I'd tell him to get right up Goddards nose. BJ has a tendency to lose focus and play the tough man when he's physically challenged recently.
The one area of concern is our lack of a tall defender who can zone off and be third man up at backline contests. I know some people bemoan Waites loss in this area but IMO, his value was cutting off leads. If you look at Geelong, Hawthorn and St Kilda, they have defenders who drop off their own opponent at the appropriate time and assist a teammate with a spoil. We dont do that anywhere near well enough. Too often our backmen are left to contest one on one marking duels. It's been a problem for years and the Saints will hurt us if we allow them them ascendency in this area.

Carlos on Kosi, Bower on Riewoldt, T/bird as a defensive forward on Sam Fisher, Carrots forward on Goddard and AJ on Montagna.
I've been an advocate of Fish but I'd bring in Harts to give us a bit more flexibility.

I get a feeling Jamo might miss, he has been played on smaller types since his injury to avoid too much spiling above his shoulders, well IMO anyway. With no obvious small/medium forward to matchup on now is the time to give him 3 weeks break at least.

I recall last year's game against this side BV and Gram went to Judd, which kind of turned the game their way as we were matching them up until that point and they seemed to get the ascendancy after the move.

I won't be surprised if Gram goes to Juddy and Jones goes to one of the other players in the mid.

My memories of last years match:

- King killed us in the ruck (not playing this time thankfully)
- Riewoldt was dominant until Jamison was moved on to him in the 2nd half
- Hayes and Gram were both very good at the stoppages
- Milne ended up kicking 5 or 6 (is he fit this week?)

If we can prevent these problems reoccurring and if our forwardline can function well we are a real chance. Easier said than done I know as they have improved significantly.

I love your optimism, and we too have improved a fair bit.

Channel 7 have been working on a Silvagni / Harvey (being at opposing clubs to their playing careers etc etc) filler now for over 2 weeks...should be riveting stuff...good chance when the old footage of Harvs sidestepping about 10 Blues in '98, Bruce will utter the word 'delicious'.

Setanta didn't take one mark playing as a forward against Brisbane.

One reason he didn't take a mark (apart from the one where Simmo gave away a free) is that they only kicked it to him once. They played through Fev all the time which was good as they were able to exploit a mismatch (which they failed to do ag. Essendon*).

I think Setanta's role was to create space and provide pressure. I would like to see him used more as a leading forward where his pace and height came in to play. They have to give him a decent go if they want him to be a forward - two weeks on then back to the Ants is pointless. He did a lot of running, put on fair bit of pressure and while he didn't get the ball much he used it very well - involved directly in three goals and kicked another. Cloke tries hard but is a liability up forward because he is so slow. Couldn't have him and Fish in same forward line. Wiggo is competing with Fish for a game. I'd like to see Setanta lead more and be used more because he has the athleticism to be a good battling worker at CHF. I think we are kidding ourselves if we want Big K as a CHF. He is a classic ruckman and his combination with Hammo is very exciting. I am not that fussed about getting Warnock back. Big K is very mobile for a ruckman and hunts the ball but being mobile and being quick over the first few yards are not the same thing. Play him and Hammo in the ruck with a run in the forward pocket. I'd rather him be a gun ruck that an average CHF

Sounds like Haerts might get a run on Kosi - scary. Hope he can grab his chance.

Should be rivetting, but probably won't be. They'll flower it.
