With some or all of Bower, Thornton, White and Davies about to get the arse, Rowe coming back from a bout of cancer and Casboult unable to kick if his life depended on it, he might actually have a point.
Personally I'd get a key defender to develop in the draft, then look at maybe a key forward if one falls in our laps, but that's it. Need a legitimate succession plan to Waite if we wind up persisting with Hendo in defence and Rowe doesn't pan out, and we need a pool of three young key defenders now to support that. We only have two (McInnes has been great, but he's no key defender).
I think we have the talent on our list it just needs development. If you look at our list we have around 12 genuine KPP (not including ruck man). Thats a fair percentage of our list. Any we trade or delist should be replaced via free agency or the draft.
I have a gut feeling MM may want to keep Thornton. He may like him as a fwd/back up ruckman or even as a key defender. Some consistent game time, some belief and a specific role may see Thornton get back to the player he was.
Disagree, it's not about quantity, it's quality. If anything, we are lacking in players who are genuine key position height that can play a number of roles. Why should we settle with what we have if what we have is just that little bit behind what the opposition can field? It's not simply about settling a position, it's being able to outplay, out complete the opposition. I'd don't want to finish second to Hawthorn, (for instance) I want to be in a position to be able to better them.
We are too introspective in all areas.
