We can't have someone who hasn't played at AFL level. Failed each time. Even if they're smart and know how to coach they just don't get the respect of the players.

Neil Craig never played AFL.

His SANFL coaching record was ordinary prior to landing the Crows gig. Did pretty well there but failed to win 2 prelims.

So are you saying he was a more successful coach in the competition he never played in than the one where he played 300 games for 2 flags?

That's correct. His appointment at the Crows was initially frowned upon based on his lack of AFL experience and SANFL coaching record (won 4 of 9 games as caretaker Crows coach in 2004 and took Norwood to a Grand Final once in his five years there). That said he had a good SANFL pedigree playing under some very good coaches at the time in Bob Hammond and Jack Oatey. He is a very intelligent and engaging operator. We crossed paths a few times at Flinders Uni where he went on to finish a PhD in Sports Science and I was studying Politics/Economics. Funny thing was that even though I wanted to pick his brain about football, he always ended up turning the conversation to politics.

Ok, so put your hand up if you have interviewed a candidate?

Includes audio of WIlson's discussion about Bolton and Pyke.

Assuming we get a coach from outside the bubble I'd like to hope that guys like Yarran/Henderson etc are more likely to stay and be given a fresh outlook on footy and their future at Carlton.

Interestingly in those 2 years that Adelaide went close in '05 and '06 Don Pyke was an assistant under Craig. Another link was Trigg being CEO at the time.

Went on to pursue business interests and in 2014 rejoined the ranks as West Coasts stoppage and structure coach, and West Coast's midfield has gone from one of the weakest to strongest.

Usually in these coaching appointments the media have a daily wild stab at who is favourite, only for an outside "bolter" to get the gig.

We all have different views on what makes a coach, but from a forum point of view, and from everything I've read on here he ticks most posters needs.

Played AFL.
Played in flags.
Comes from a successful club model.
Has coached his own side. (Claremont).
Is in a current modern structure.
Has been at more than one club, and therefore less chance that's he just riding the coat tails of others work.
His time as an assistant at both clubs has conincided with on-field improvement. His departure from Adelaide conincided with an on-field decline.

Over here in Adelaide he is getting more noise for their job than ours so interested in what's the vibe about him currently in Perth, and is he a genuine contender?

Hi Caro.

I would be very happy with Don Pyke. I don't want Neil Craig anywhere near the club. Nice bloke apparently but has a poor record wherever he goes, gets moved on quickly and is not what Carlton needs at the moment.

Just wondering what you mean by gets moved on quickly?

He was the longest serving coach in Crows history and was with the Club overall from 1997-2011
From there he was signed by the Demons immediately and only left in 2013 because he didn't get the top job as the AFL had sorted Paul Roos for the job.
Then he joined then immediately joined the Bombers. Where he still is.

Who moved him on quickly?

A bit more info on Pyke -> http://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/news/ ... west-coast

Quote:
After his retirement at the end of the 1996 season, Pyke held a number of roles with the West Coast Eagles, serving as a team runner for two seasons and, following a stint coaching the Claremont Football Club, returning as a director for four years, chairing the football affairs committee until 2004.

Coaching experience and boardroom experience. That's kind of interesting.

Instead of captain coach, can we get him as coach/president?!

We all wanted a process which throws up names we don't consider. It doesn't guarantee but is more likely to result in a better appointment. So if it is Pyke or Dew or Bolton, Barker we run with the ball and we need to give them 4 years and that means don't judge them on results until the 4th season. Judge the new coach on process, player development and game plan and effort but not win/loss ratio until season 4 (and that takes into account we could win 10 games or 3 games next year and flatline or fall back for a few years.

absolutely ... henderson and yarran can be on our a list ... they just need to be engaged into what we're doing.

sadly, my gut says they're jaded and over cfc and everything it's been about.

this is a good point,
and I can personally vouch for how he was regarded at
Melbourne by the players.
They love him, and thrive due to his empathy.
I witnessed the change in atmosphere after he arrived.

Carlton caretaker coach John Barker and Hawthorn assistant Brendon Bolton made in-depth presentations to Carlton's coaching subcommittee on Thursday, as the Blues took the next step in their hunt for a new coach.

Bolton and Barker made their pitches to the Carlton subcommitte, headed by Steven Trigg in off-site meetings.

Fairfax Media believes at least one other candidate was also presenting to the panel of Trigg, Ange Postecoglou, Chris Judd and Ken Sheldon.

Didn't hate Claremont back then.
