I think our list management has, to some degree, been on rails in the immediate aftermath of the review.
I can’t see that changing this year, at least not at the top end.
33 contracts to review this year (21) and next (12). McGovern, Docherty & Martin aside, they’re all at or below the league average.
Young, Sam Durdin, McGovern, Plowman, Marchbank, Kemp, Akuei, Docherty, Newman & now Cincotta.
Whatever flexibility existed within this group, it has now got to carry the burden for insurance against $800k worth of Williams. Unless the average salary comes down to $225-250k, there’s going to be some churn.
Durdin is rookie-eligible, so that’s a bonus. If he wants more than that, he’ll have look elsewhere. Young is a $400-500k piece in our set up, but we’d have to back end a 2028 contract to get him near that. Doc’s contract will be a difficult conversation. He’d be an $800k player anywhere else… Cook’s experience at the #lifestyle clubs has never been more important than it will be here. The AFL are desperate to kick us again. Newman seems like the type of guy that would be happy with a 1yr $200k deal. There might even be a Podsiadly angle via the women’s team if he’s interested.
McGovern, Plowman, Marchbank, Kemp, Akuei, Cincotta… I don’t think Akuei survives without the Cat B allowance, but there’s no savings to be made there. Cincotta might turn out to be sufficient insurance for Williams, but he’s got to take someone’s spot on the list. It might be Akuei. McGovern is definitely getting a haircut, but he’s going to command something closer to $400k than $200k. The writing is on the wall for Plowman & Marchbank - and if Kemp doesn’t make a serious case as a genuine utility, we might find that three becomes one.
