Seems pretty obvious to me. We should argue Cripps was trying to take possession of the ball on his chest, akin to a player taking a chest mark. A major part of the AFL's argument against Cripps was that he could have had his arms outstretched...

“He could’ve taken the ball with his arms outstretched, which would’ve meant there was no act of bumping at all ... Cripps changed his shape prior to impact from simply attempting to gather the ball to a bumping position in which he was airborne, that would very likely cause high contact to an opponent.”

Cripps should argue hew was trying to take possession of the ball on his chest which he has every right to do, and then at the last minute saw Ah Chee and tried to avoid the collision but it was too late.

Its exactly this.

His arm stretched to catch it on the chest whilst protecting the space...it is NOT a bump. That's what the AFL are suggesting, regardless of the fact they can see its not as they say "a Classic Bump". FMD

I mean why do we as fans put ourselves through this angst of trying to apply sound logic, legal process and genuine common sense to this process?

I'm glad the club are taking it to city hall.

I don't think it will make a difference but I'm glad we're doing it. I don't know why we as fans expect any different though.

Why put ourselves through this angst ? no angst at all . On the contray. Exhilaration for me . Our Club fighting back against Goliath .

WE are the Empire.

We built the VFL and the AFL.

I guess we didnt dot the i's and cross the t's when we gave life to the AFL Commission.
They turned on us. WE didnt expect it. Now we have to turn on it....Politicians have tried, but they are not Transparent....law onto their own.

They must be held to account.

Go for it Carlton. They tries to kill us in 2002, but we are still here and have the biggest crowds attending our games in the AFL.

We are the hand that feeds them !!!

Cripps appeal: The Tribunal's "frolic and journey"
Now we're onto the "bump" as the Tribunal found it to be on Tuesday night.

Cripps' counsel is highly critical of this term.

Townshend says a bump is a "decision", but the Tribunal found both Cripps and Ah Chee had eyes for the football and they both contested the ball. Therefore, no "decision" from Cripps to bump.

"This is where the Tribunal goes on a frolic and journey," Townshend says.

"In the absence of Cripps even being asked if he bumped his opponent … the chairperson (Jeff Gleeson) later postures "can you bump and contest the ball at the same time?"

"The discussion emerges from a question and put to our counsel.

"Then it came out of the jury room as a finding.

"The first step is you had to be choosing to bump. It was an invention of the Tribunal's question."

In summary to date, Cripps' counsel is critical of the term "bump", when the Tribunal found him to be contesting the ball, and they're also critical of the chairman Jeff Gleeson's lack of direction to his fellow jurors prior to making a decision.

We're 50 minutes in. – Michael Whiting

Cripps appeal: Questioning the chairperson's role at the Tribunal
Cripps' counsel Christopher Townshend is 35 minutes into their submission.

He is hammering the point that the Tribunal chairman on Tuesday night – Jeff Gleeson – should have given directions to the two-member jury on questions of law and fact.

In previous years the chairman gave directions to a three-member jury, but was not involved in the decision-making, whereas now he is.

Townshend has read laws that suggest this should have happened to give a fair hearing.

This is the error in law, he says.

"The fundamental obligation of the Tribunal is to give natural justice," he said.

"The chairperson did not pause to give directions before retiring.

"The findings the Tribunal came up with behind closed doors is they came up with two things at once (that it was a contest and that he chose to bump). It should have required some directions.

"It can't happen behind closed doors, that can't be right." – Michael Whiting

We should win just for use of "frolic".

WOW.

No mincing words.
That alone is a win for not only Carlton but for Football Clubs too.

Huge statement. Subtlety is beautiful, questioning the bias of Gleeson, interfering with natural lustice in football matters.

Was it a bump or was he reaching out his arms to catch the ball in the air, and turning to protect the space. Whether to jump or not is not in question. Contesting is mandatory as far as the rules go, what the fans want, what the game needs to keep its fabric, and the players with that competitive gene are prepared to give us, the footy community.

Let him free. Cripps didn’t bump. That’s all the AFL has. It’s laughable.

Laughable

"The Tribunal conceded both players were contesting the ball and both had eyes for it."

How the hell could they then come to a decision he bumped.
Gee the AFL embarrasses itself sometimes - and that's being generous.

So you can have eyes on the ball and still bump.

Talk about pedantic.

AFL making shit up as they go. Again.

Truly is a joke.
